Multiple-bitrate streaming makes the same video or audio available in several encoded versions, each with its own bitrate and often its own resolution or codec. A player can choose among those versions; when it changes its choice as conditions change, that process is called adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming.

What multiple-bitrate streaming means

A streaming service can encode one source into several renditions, from lower-bitrate versions to higher-bitrate ones. A manifest or playlist lists the available options so a compatible player can request them. The collection of choices is commonly called a bitrate ladder or, in IETF terminology, content variation. The ladder is what the service makes available; choosing a rendition is a separate player function. IETF RFC 9317

How adaptive bitrate streaming works

  1. The media workflow creates renditions. The source is encoded into alternatives at different bitrates and potentially different resolutions or codecs.
  2. The playlist or manifest advertises them. The player learns which versions are available and how to retrieve their media segments.
  3. The player selects a version. It can consider observed network throughput, buffer state and device capabilities, including memory, CPU and display size.
  4. The player may change versions during playback. With segmented delivery, it can request a different rendition for later segments as conditions change.

ABR is not a fixed switching schedule or a single universal algorithm. Implementations vary: a client may begin with a throughput probe and then use passive network observations or buffer behavior to guide later choices. The player is balancing audiovisual quality against the risk of playback stalls, and different services may prioritize those objectives differently. RFC 9317

Why more bitrate is not always better

A higher-bitrate rendition can preserve more visual or audio detail, but only if the connection and device can sustain it. If the player requests data faster than the delivery path can provide it, the playback buffer can empty and cause a stall. A lower-bitrate version may therefore deliver a smoother experience when capacity is limited. ABR can respond to available conditions; it cannot increase the capacity of the underlying network path.

How HLS, DASH and CMAF fit in

HLS

Apple describes HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) as a method for delivering live and prerecorded media over HTTP. Its documentation supports alternate bitrate streams and switching between them in response to bandwidth changes. Apple HLS overview

DASH

MPEG-DASH is another HTTP-based approach to segmented media delivery. Google’s YouTube Live guidance describes DASH as codec-agnostic, but its encoder requirements apply to delivering live content to YouTube, not to every DASH service or workflow. YouTube Live DASH encoding guide

What to compare in a streaming implementation

  • Rendition ladder: The available resolutions, codecs and bitrates determine which options the player can choose.
  • Selection behavior: Players differ in how they use throughput, buffer state and device capabilities to select a rendition.
  • Delivery and compatibility: Check whether the workflow uses HLS, DASH or both, and whether target devices support the codecs and packaging it requires.
  • Playback priorities: Image and audio quality, startup time, stalls and live-stream latency can matter differently for different use cases.
