Microsoft SQL Server is a database product used to store, process, and secure data. Its central component is the SQL Server Database Engine, but an installation may also include services for analytics or data integration. Which features and capacity limits are available depends on the edition and release.
What does Microsoft SQL Server mean?
SQL Server is Microsoft’s database product. The Database Engine is its core service: Microsoft describes it as “the core service for storing, processing, and securing data.” It provides controlled access to data and transaction processing. (Microsoft Learn: Install SQL Server Database Engine)
The terms are related but not interchangeable in every context. The Database Engine is the central data service; SQL Server can refer to the broader product and its installable components. Depending on the release and installation, those components can include Analysis Services for analytics such as OLAP and data mining, and Integration Services for copying, moving, and transforming data. The Database Engine also supports capabilities such as replication and full-text search.
What does SQL Server do?
At its core, SQL Server lets applications and users work with organized data through a database system. The Database Engine stores and processes that data, manages transactions, and controls access. Additional SQL Server components support tasks such as analyzing data or integrating it from different sources. Microsoft’s feature and installation documentation covers relational, XML, and JSON data as well as analytics and data movement.

How do SQL Server editions differ?
For SQL Server 2025 (17.x), Microsoft describes editions for different workloads. The available features and limits are release-specific, so do not assume that a figure for SQL Server 2025 applies to earlier versions.
| Edition | Intended use and notable limits in SQL Server 2025 |
|---|---|
| Enterprise | Microsoft’s highest-capability offering for complex workloads. Maximum relational database size: 524 PB. |
| Standard | A balance of capabilities for business workloads. Maximum relational database size: 524 PB; Database Engine compute capacity: lesser of four sockets or 32 cores; Database Engine buffer-pool memory limit: 256 GB. |
| Developer | For development and testing, with functionality corresponding to Enterprise or Standard. Not for production use. |
| Evaluation | Enterprise functionality for evaluation, with a 180-day deployment period. |
| Express | Free entry-level database edition for learning and smaller applications. Maximum relational database size: 50 GB; Database Engine compute capacity: lesser of one socket or four cores; Database Engine buffer-pool memory limit: 1,410 MB. |
| Express LocalDB | A lightweight, user-mode version of Express. |
These edition descriptions and specifications are from Microsoft’s SQL Server 2025 (17.x) documentation. They are technical capacity specifications, not a substitute for checking feature support, deployment needs, or applicable licensing terms. What changed in SQL Server 2025?
Microsoft discontinued Web edition in SQL Server 2025. Express now incorporates features that were previously available in Express with Advanced Services. These changes apply to the 2025 release; edition availability and features may differ in other versions. (What’s new in SQL Server 2025)

Which edition should you use?
- For learning or a small application: Express is the free entry-level option described by Microsoft.
- For development or testing: Developer provides Enterprise- or Standard-equivalent functionality for those purposes, but is not licensed for production use.
- For business or complex production workloads: Standard and Enterprise are positioned for business and complex workloads respectively. Compare required features, capacity, deployment needs, and licensing before choosing.
- For a lightweight local setup: Express LocalDB runs in user mode.
SQL Server is available as an installable product, and the installation path depends on edition and licensing route. Installation requirements also depend on the application’s needs; consult Microsoft’s release-specific installation guidance and licensing resources before deployment.
