Mini LED local dimming is a backlight-control system for LCD televisions. It divides the LEDs behind the LCD panel into independently controlled zones, dimming dark parts of a scene while keeping bright areas illuminated. The result can be deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more convincing HDR than a conventional edge-lit or full-array LED TV.

It is not pixel-level lighting: every zone covers many LCD pixels. A small bright object can therefore illuminate part of the surrounding dark area, creating a visible halo. Zone count helps, but the television’s dimming algorithm, LCD panel contrast and image-processing choices determine how good the result actually looks.

What is Mini LED local dimming?

Mini LED describes the light source behind an LCD panel, not the panel’s individual pixels. Manufacturers use much smaller LEDs than in many older LCD backlights and arrange them behind the screen. Software groups those LEDs into zones and adjusts each group according to the image being displayed.

In a night scene with a bright moon, for example, the zones behind the sky can be reduced while the zones behind the moon remain bright. The LCD layer still creates the picture and blocks or passes that backlight; the Mini LED system simply gives the television finer control over how much light is available in different screen areas.

Sony’s K-85XR70 specifications identify that model as an LCD television with Mini LED (QLED) backlighting and local dimming. Samsung similarly describes Mini LED televisions as using smaller LEDs to create local-dimming zones for brightness and contrast control.

Mini LED is different from OLED

OLED pixels emit their own light. A pixel can switch off without affecting neighboring pixels, which is why OLED offers inherently pixel-level black control. A Mini LED television remains an LCD set with a backlight behind the entire panel. Its zones can be very small and numerous, but they still illuminate groups of pixels rather than one pixel at a time.

That distinction prevents an important misunderstanding: Mini LED can substantially improve an LCD television, but the label does not mean the set has OLED-like control in every scene. RTINGS notes that Mini LED models improve on traditional LED televisions but have not caught up with OLED overall. Read its technical overview at RTINGS’ “TV Panel Types: What Is Mini LED?”.

How local dimming changes the picture

Higher contrast and darker mixed scenes

Without local dimming, a backlight may remain broadly illuminated even when much of the image is black. Blacks then look gray, especially in a dark room. Local dimming lets the television lower light in darker zones while preserving brightness in highlights. RTINGS reports that tested Mini LED televisions generally produce stronger contrast than more traditional LED models, although panel behavior and dimming precision affect the measured and perceived result.

The biggest improvement appears in mixed scenes: a star field, a dark room with a lamp, or a nighttime street with bright signs. A television can keep the surrounding area relatively dim instead of raising the whole screen’s backlight to support one highlight.

Brighter, more controlled HDR highlights

HDR content combines very dark areas with intense highlights. Local dimming helps maintain that separation, so a bright window, reflection or light source can stand out without forcing every nearby black area to become equally bright. This is one reason manufacturers position Mini LED and related systems around brightness and contrast.

Do not infer a particular peak-brightness number from the Mini LED name. Brightness depends on the model’s LED output, panel, heat management, picture mode and HDR implementation. Samsung’s product and technology pages describe those benefits as manufacturer guidance rather than an independent, category-wide measurement.

Haloing around small bright objects

A zone cannot know that only a few pixels inside it are bright. If white subtitles, a star or a small highlight sits inside a zone that also covers dark pixels, the zone may stay illuminated. Light can then appear to spread into the surrounding black area. Viewers commonly call this blooming; RTINGS uses haloing as the more technically appropriate term for this local-dimming glow.

Haloing is easiest to notice in a dark room, with white subtitles over black video or a bright object against a nearly black background. It can be less visible in a bright room or in ordinary scenes with larger areas of light. Dimming algorithms may also choose to suppress the glow by dimming the highlight, so two televisions with similar hardware can look different.

Do more dimming zones make a TV better?

More zones generally give the processor smaller areas to control. A bright object is less likely to share a zone with as much dark content, which can reduce haloing and improve contrast transitions. However, zone count is not a quality score by itself.

RTINGS summarizes the limitation plainly: “It’s not perfect, though, and the truth is that without the right algorithms controlling those zones, local dimming is still going to look bad even if you throw 10,000 zones in.” The processor must decide when to dim, how quickly to react and whether to prioritize black level, highlight brightness or reduced artifacts. Native panel contrast also matters; a panel that leaks more light can limit the benefit of sophisticated backlight control.

Two model-specific RTINGS examples

RTINGS uses two tested-size examples to show why raw counts need context:

Model example Dimming-zone figure or test result What RTINGS reported
Hisense QD7QF 160 zones on the tested size Visible haloing around subtitles and raised black levels when small bright content kept a larger zone lit.
Sony BRAVIA 9 1,512 zones on the tested size Less haloing than the QD7QF example; it scored 9 on RTINGS’ zone-precision test in its 2024–2025 TV comparison.

These are examples from particular screen sizes and tests, not universal thresholds. A 1,500-zone television is not automatically better than every 1,000-zone television, and a lower-count set may still be suitable if its processing and panel perform well. Compare like-sized models, preferably within the same brand and model year, then consult model-level testing.

What to check when comparing Mini LED televisions

Use the technology label as a starting point, then evaluate the television you would actually buy. The following sequence keeps the most visible local-dimming questions ahead of less important specification differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Look for independent dark-scene testing. Check whether reviews describe black levels in mixed scenes, subtitle behavior, bright objects on black backgrounds and the visibility of halos in a dark room. A manufacturer description confirms that a set uses Mini LED; it does not measure its precision.
  2. Compare zone counts only on comparable sets. A count is meaningful when screen sizes, model years and measurement methods are comparable. Treat “more zones” as a potential advantage, not proof of superior picture quality.
  3. Inspect the dimming algorithm’s behavior. Reviews may report whether the television dims aggressively, lets blacks rise to preserve highlights, or causes visible transitions when objects move. Do not assume a behavior is universal across a brand.
  4. Check native panel contrast and viewing conditions. A room with controlled lighting makes haloing and black-level differences easier to see. IPS-, VA- and other panel characteristics can change the result, so identify the actual panel and test results for the model.
  5. Verify HDR and gaming specifications separately. Confirm supported HDR formats, refresh rate, variable-refresh features, input lag and the ports you need. Sony’s K-85XR70 specification, for example, lists 120 Hz and HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support; those are model specifications, not automatic features of every Mini LED TV.
  6. Match size to seating distance. A larger screen can make zone boundaries and subtitle halos easier to notice, while a smaller screen may hide them at the same distance. Choose the size for your room before using zone count as a tie-breaker.
  7. Check regional details. Names, tuners, HDR support, firmware and available sizes can vary by country. Samsung’s US listing identifies the QN80F as a 2025 Neo QLED 4K Mini LED TV and describes its Quantum Matrix Technology Core as using controlled Mini LED zones; that listing does not establish identical specifications in every market.

How local dimming behaves in common viewing situations

Movies with black bars

Letterboxed films create large dark strips above and below the image. A capable algorithm can dim those areas substantially. If bright subtitles or a logo overlaps a bar, the relevant zone may brighten and make part of the bar look gray or produce a small halo.

Subtitles and menus

White text on black is a demanding test because the bright area is small and sharply defined. If subtitles look surrounded by a glow, that is the zone-level limitation rather than evidence that the LCD pixels themselves are emitting light.

Sports and bright daytime programs

Scenes with large, evenly lit areas usually make haloing less obvious. Local dimming can still help contrast between a bright field, a dark crowd and graphics, but the improvement may be less dramatic than in a night scene.

Console and PC gaming

HDR games often contain bright interface elements over dark backgrounds, making local-dimming behavior visible. Check independent measurements for the exact game mode, refresh rate and firmware. A television may use a different dimming strategy in low-latency mode than in a movie picture mode.

Common misconceptions and buying mistakes

  • “Mini LED means every pixel is a tiny LED.” It does not. Mini LEDs are backlight elements behind an LCD panel; the LCD pixels still modulate that light.
  • “A higher zone count guarantees OLED-level blacks.” Zones remain larger than pixels, and algorithms and panel contrast can limit performance.
  • “The manufacturer’s brightness claim proves HDR performance.” Brightness figures may use different windows, modes and measurement conditions. Compare independent tests and the model’s HDR behavior.
  • “All haloing is a defect.” Some haloing is an inherent trade-off of zone-based LCD control. Aggressive processing can reduce the glow but may dim or suppress small highlights.
  • “Turning local dimming on always improves the picture.” The preferred setting depends on the model and content. If a television offers local-dimming levels, compare them with the material you watch; do not assume the highest setting is automatically most accurate.

Who benefits most from Mini LED local dimming?

Mini LED is especially relevant if you want an LCD television with strong HDR highlights, watch in a room where high brightness matters, or are upgrading from a conventional LED set with weak dark-scene contrast. It can deliver a substantial improvement without changing the basic LCD viewing characteristics of the television.

It is less compelling to choose solely by the Mini LED badge if your priority is perfect pixel-level black control, if you watch mostly bright content where local dimming differences are hard to see, or if a particular model has poor processing. In those cases, compare the actual dark-scene results, viewing environment and features rather than assuming the backlight name settles the decision.

The practical verdict

Mini LED local dimming improves an LCD television by dividing its backlight into controllable zones. That can produce darker blacks, higher contrast and brighter-looking HDR highlights, but it can also create haloing when a small bright object shares a zone with dark surroundings. More zones usually provide finer control, yet the algorithm and LCD panel are just as important. Compare independent model tests, subtitle and mixed-scene behavior, HDR support, refresh rate and regional specifications before treating any Mini LED television as the right choice.
