Mina the Hollower is a single-player action-adventure from Yacht Club Games. You play Mina, a whip-wielding Hollower and inventor sent back to Tenebrous Isle, where six failing Spark Generators have left a once-prosperous island vulnerable to a growing evil. Playing the game revolves around three connected actions: burrowing to evade attacks and reach new areas, fighting with a chosen weapon and limited-use Sidearms, and exploring a dense island while improving Mina with stat choices and passive Trinkets.
The publisher describes a 20-plus-hour adventure with more than 25 bosses and mini-bosses, 60 Trinkets, and hundreds of gameplay modifiers. Those are developer-stated figures, not independently measured guarantees. The live game page lists May 29, 2026 as the release date, but platform availability differs between dated announcements and the current store listings, so check the live listing for your region and device.
What kind of game is Mina the Hollower?
Mina the Hollower combines action combat, interconnected exploration, equipment choices, and light character development. It is not presented as a sequence of isolated stages. Instead, Yacht Club Games describes Tenebrous Isle as a large, densely connected world made up of dozens of regions. The studio says the game contains more total screens than Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove combined; that is the developer’s scale comparison rather than an independently counted measurement.

The visual style uses 8-bit imagery inspired by the Game Boy Color, expanded with widescreen presentation and detailed animation. The story takes inspiration from Victorian Gothic horror. Mina’s signature burrowing move gives the game its own movement identity: she can disappear into the ground, move beneath hazards, emerge to attack, and use underground routes to navigate the island.

Yacht Club Games’ short description is: “Take control of Mina, a renowned Hollower hurtled into a desperate mission to rescue a cursed island.” In practical terms, the game asks you to learn enemy patterns, decide when to stay above ground or burrow, select a weapon that matches your preferred range and tempo, and spend resources on a build that supports the way you play.
Who is Mina, and what happened on Tenebrous Isle?
Mina’s role
Mina is both a Hollower and an inventor. Celia Schilling, Marketing Director at Yacht Club Games, calls her “a whip-wielding Hollower and visionary inventor!” She returns to Tenebrous Isle after being away for years. Her earlier work on the island was commissioned by Baron Lionel: Mina built the Spark Generators, radiant towers intended to power industry, peace, and prosperity.
The failing generators
The generators are now malfunctioning, and an evil is growing near Ossex, the island’s central area that remains fully powered. The main quest is to reach and restore six failing Spark Generators. Each generator is located away from Ossex and guarded by a boss, giving the campaign a clear set of major objectives without reducing the island to a simple linear path.

The developer says routes can vary in difficulty or provide different rewards. It also says special equipment and Trinkets are not required to advance through the main quest. That distinction matters: finding optional gear can change how Mina fights or survives, but the story is not designed around one mandatory drop that must be collected before the next generator becomes accessible.
How does burrowing work?
Burrowing is the central movement verb. The official game description pairs it with leaping and dodging, and the mechanic serves more than one purpose:

- Evading attacks: going underground can let Mina avoid threats that would be dangerous at ground level.
- Setting up attacks: burrowing changes Mina’s position and gives her another way to approach enemies instead of trading blows head-on.
- Crossing the environment: underground movement is part of exploration, helping Mina navigate routes through the island.
- Connecting combat and exploration: the same skill used to survive an encounter can also reveal a way forward or make a traversal problem manageable.
Because the sources describe the function but do not provide frame data, invulnerability timings, or a complete control manual, it is more accurate to think of burrowing as a flexible movement-and-evasion system than to assume it is an unlimited escape button. Learning when to emerge is as important as learning when to dive.
How combat choices shape play
Mina’s primary weapon is the whip-like Nightstar, but the game lets you choose among weapons with different movesets. In a February 2026 developer overview, Yacht Club Games described three early choices as follows:

These are descriptions of intended play styles, not a ranking. The announcement says weapons can be upgraded, so choosing a weapon affects both the feel of ordinary attacks and the way you may invest in it later. The available information does not establish a universally best weapon, and the right choice depends on whether you value reach, charged power, or fast precision.
Sidearms and Joules
Sidearms are separate tactical tools that consume Joules. They add options beyond Mina’s main weapon, but their use is limited by the resource economy. The developer’s examples show how varied they can be:
- Volt Hatchet: arcs forward and creates a shockwave on impact.
- Gyro Dagger: travels outward and returns like a boomerang.
- Recall: a disc that warps through danger and explodes.
- Other Sidearms: the announcement says some can throw, dash, block, summon, or fish.
Sidearms are found in the field and are lost on death, according to the developer. That makes them a tactical layer rather than a permanent replacement for the main weapon. Spending Joules at the right moment can solve an encounter, but conserving them may matter when you are exploring far from safety or preparing for a boss.

How leveling, Bones, and Trinkets work
Bones and level-up categories
Enemies and the world provide Bones, which function as currency and as Mina’s level-up resource. When Mina has collected enough, you can choose how to use that resource:

The risk is tied to carrying Bones. Yacht Club Games warns that dying while carrying many Bones can mean losing them. A cautious player may value regular spending or banking, while a risk-tolerant player may carry a larger reserve in pursuit of a more significant upgrade. The sources do not specify the exact loss formula, so do not assume that every death removes the same percentage or amount.
Trinkets and passive effects
The game contains 60 Trinkets, according to the developer. Trinkets are equipable items that grant passive abilities, and their effects can be stacked. They can be equipped or unequipped at Mina’s base, the Underlab.
Trinkets therefore complement, rather than replace, the active choices made with weapons and Sidearms. A weapon determines how attacks feel moment to moment; a stat choice changes Mina’s broader capabilities; Trinkets add passive modifiers that can reinforce a strategy. The studio explicitly says no particular Trinket or special equipment is required for main-quest progression, so experimentation is encouraged without turning one discovery into a mandatory key.
What does exploration look like?
Tenebrous Isle is designed as a connected space rather than a set of unrelated combat rooms. Dozens of distinct regions, multiple route options, optional rewards, and underground movement all support an exploratory loop:

- Enter a region and identify hazards, enemies, and possible routes.
- Use burrowing, jumping, and dodging to cross the environment or avoid unnecessary damage.
- Fight with the selected main weapon and spend Joules on a Sidearm when its special effect is worth the cost.
- Collect Bones, equipment, and Trinkets while deciding how much risk to accept.
- Return to the Underlab when you want to change passive effects or adjust your approach.
- Choose which route toward a generator or reward best fits your current build and confidence.
The developer’s description of route variation does not mean every route has identical difficulty or rewards. It means the campaign offers meaningful choices about where to go and what to pursue, while the lack of mandatory special gear keeps those choices from becoming hard progression locks.

The February announcement also discussed a PlayStation 5 demo covering the opening through the first major boss, with progress carrying into the full release. That was historical announcement context; its current availability is not established by the dated information alone.

If you prefer deliberate positioning
Nightstar’s long reach and space-control description point toward a style built around distance and placement. Burrowing can help you reset your position instead of absorbing every attack.
If you like heavy commitment

The combination of four level-up categories, upgradeable weapons, Joule-powered Sidearms, stackable Trinkets, and hundreds of announced modifiers gives you several ways to specialize. Since no best build is established by the available evidence, treat the systems as a set of experiments: choose a weapon for its moveset, use stat investment to support that plan, and equip passive effects that solve the problems you are actually encountering.
Is Mina the Hollower a roguelike or a linear game?
The supplied descriptions identify it as a single-player action-adventure with a large interconnected world, not as a roguelike.
