Microchimerism is the coexistence of a small number of genetically distinct, living cells in a person’s body. During pregnancy, cells can cross between fetus and mother in both directions. Some cells may remain for years, but they do not rewrite the host’s DNA, and their health effects are still unsettled.
Microchimerism in plain language
Your body can contain a tiny population of cells that originated in another person. Those cells are genetically different from your own cells, yet they can circulate or settle in tissues alongside your cells. That condition is called microchimerism.
Pregnancy is the best-known route. Fetal-origin cells can enter the mother, and maternal-origin cells can enter the fetus. The exchange involves intact cells, not merely loose genetic fragments. A mother who carries fetal cells therefore has a small population of her child’s cells, while the child may carry cells that came from the mother.

The medical literature uses the term for cells acquired from another genetically different person, including pregnancy-related cells. The review by Fjeldstad, Johnsen and Staff explains the maternal-health context in detail (Obstetric Medicine review).
How cells cross between mother and fetus
During pregnancy, the placenta separates maternal and fetal blood supplies but is not an absolute cellular barrier. Cells can cross the maternal–fetal interface in both directions. Fetal cells entering maternal circulation are often called fetal microchimerism; maternal cells found in the child are maternal microchimerism.
Fetal-origin cells in the mother
Fetal cells can be detected in maternal blood and, in research studies, in maternal tissues. They may include progenitor or other cell types. Their number is small compared with the mother’s own cells, which is why the phenomenon is “micro”-chimerism rather than a mixture of equally sized populations.

Maternal-origin cells in the child
Maternal cells can move into the fetus before birth. Because those cells can be present during development, researchers have investigated whether maternal microchimerism might influence immune education or tissue biology. Those proposed roles remain areas of study rather than established clinical effects.

Other routes besides a current pregnancy
Pregnancy is the central context in the sources reviewed here, but the definition is broader than a single mother–child exchange. A person’s microchimeric cells may reflect an earlier pregnancy, and the review literature discusses the “prepregnancy context,” including the possibility that cells acquired from a mother can persist into adulthood. The presence of a genetically distinct cell population does not, by itself, identify when or how those cells were acquired.
Microchimerism versus cell-free fetal DNA
These terms are often confused because both involve genetic material associated with a fetus. They describe different biological things.
| Feature | Microchimerism | Cell-free fetal DNA |
|---|---|---|
| What is detected? | Intact, living cells that originated in another person | DNA fragments circulating outside intact cells |
| What does a positive signal mean? | A rare cell population with a different genetic origin is present in the sampled material | Genetic material from fetal origin is present in the sample |
| Does it rewrite the host genome? | No. The acquired cells and host cells retain their own genomes | No. Fragments do not become a replacement genome |
| How researchers distinguish it | They identify donor-specific markers in cells or tissue | They analyze DNA released into a fluid sample |
Consequently, detecting cell-free fetal DNA is not the same as proving that intact fetal cells have engrafted or persisted in a mother. Fjeldstad and colleagues explicitly distinguish cellular microchimerism from cell-free fetal DNA (review record).

Some acquired cells have been detected long after the pregnancy in which they were acquired. A primary report by Bianchi and colleagues, cited in the 2020 review, found male fetal progenitor cells in maternal blood as long as 27 years postpartum. That figure is a study-specific observation—not an average lifespan, a guarantee that every pregnancy leaves detectable cells, or proof that cells remain in every tissue for life.

Researchers infer persistence by finding donor-specific markers years after the relevant pregnancy. A male fetal cell can be distinguished in a mother by detecting Y-chromosome sequences, provided the mother does not herself have a Y chromosome. Other studies use informative genetic polymorphisms that differ between donor and host.
Persistence can vary with the individual, the tissue sampled, the type of cell and the sensitivity of the assay. A failure to detect cells in one sample does not prove that no microchimeric cells exist elsewhere, while a positive result establishes presence in that sample—not a whole-body count.
How scientists detect microchimeric cells
Because the cells are rare, studies need markers that separate donor cells from the host’s much larger population.
Y-chromosome detection
In a woman who has carried a male fetus, researchers can look for Y-chromosome sequences. A Y-specific signal can identify male fetal-origin material, although the method must be interpreted with appropriate controls and cannot identify female fetal cells.

Informative genetic polymorphisms
When donor and host differ at selected DNA variants, researchers can target those polymorphisms. This approach can identify maternal-origin cells in a child or fetal-origin cells in a mother without relying on sex chromosomes.
Cell and tissue profiling
More recent work combines polymorphism-specific quantitative PCR with single-nucleus RNA profiling. The first method estimates donor-specific genetic signals; the second examines gene-expression patterns in individual nuclei and can suggest whether cells have neural, glial or other lineage features. These are research techniques. The evidence described here does not establish a consumer diagnostic test that can reliably tell someone whether microchimeric cells are present or reconstruct pregnancy history.
What might microchimerism do in the body?
Researchers have proposed several, sometimes opposing, explanations for why these cells persist. The available evidence supports an unsettled field, not one universal function.

| Proposed role | What the literature suggests | What is not proven |
|---|---|---|
| Repair or regeneration | Some microchimeric cells may participate in responses to tissue injury or resemble progenitor cells in particular settings. | There is no established rule that fetal cells always travel to a mother’s injuries or improve healing. |
| Inflammation or disease | Studies have examined associations with autoimmunity, cancer, cardiovascular disease and placental syndromes such as preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction. | An association does not show that microchimerism caused the disease, or that removing the cells would prevent it. |
| Neutral persistence | Cells may remain without a meaningful effect in a given tissue or person. | Researchers cannot assume that every detected cell is beneficial, harmful or biologically active. |
The review literature therefore supports carefully qualified possibilities: microchimeric cells could contribute to repair, inflammation or tissue damage, or have little practical effect in a particular context. Direction and causation remain difficult to establish because the cells may be a consequence of disease, a response to it, or unrelated to the condition being studied. The 2017 review by Gammill and Nelson provides broader background on how microchimerism is defined and studied (PMC review).

What the 2026 brain study found—and what it did not show
A bioRxiv preprint posted June 10, 2026 reported maternal-origin microchimeric cells in human brain tissue. Kanaan and colleagues examined surgical specimens from people with medication-refractory epilepsy. Of 52 mother–patient pairs in the larger set, 37 cases had evaluable brain tissue; maternal microchimerism was detected in at least one brain region in 26 of 37 cases (70%).
The specimens came from a selected surgical population, not a random sample of the public. The authors reported signals in temporal, frontal and parietal regions and in the hippocampus. Single-nucleus profiling identified cells with neural and glial lineage features. The study also analyzed public brain datasets spanning different ages, but that analysis is distinct from the 37-person surgical-tissue cohort.
Those details matter when interpreting the percentage. “70%” is the proportion observed in evaluable epilepsy-surgery specimens in this preprint; it is not a general-population prevalence estimate and cannot be restated as “70% of people have maternal cells in their brains.” The source page identified the work as a preprint rather than a peer-reviewed publication at the time of the report. Read the authors’ methods and cohort description in the bioRxiv preprint.
The authors wrote: “These data show that naturally acquired Mc is prevalent, diverse, and persistent in human brain, inviting reconsideration of what constitutes ‘self,’ with broad implications for health and disease.” That is the authors’ interpretation of their findings, and it should be read with the study’s selected sample, preliminary status and lack of demonstrated clinical consequences in mind.
Does a baby’s DNA change the mother’s DNA?
No. Pregnancy can leave a mother with a small number of fetal-origin cells, but those cells are separate from the mother’s own cells. The mother’s genome is not replaced or rewritten. In a tissue sample containing both populations, genetic tests may detect the donor-specific markers of the fetal cells alongside the mother’s DNA.
The same logic applies in the other direction: maternal cells in a child do not turn the child’s genome into the mother’s genome. They are a minority population with a different origin.
What microchimerism can and cannot tell you
It can show
- That genetically distinct cells are present in the tested blood or tissue sample.
- That cellular exchange occurred between a mother and fetus in the biological context being studied.
- That donor-origin cells can persist well beyond pregnancy in at least some documented cases.
- That cells detected in a specific tissue may have features associated with particular lineages, such as neural or glial profiles.
It cannot establish on its own
- That every person retains microchimeric cells.
- That the cells are always beneficial or always harmful.
- That the cells caused a neurological disease, autoimmune condition or cancer.
- That a person’s pregnancy history can be inferred from a consumer genetic test.
- That a result from one tissue represents the number or activity of cells throughout the body.
How to read a microchimerism claim critically
- Ask what was measured. Was the study detecting intact cells, donor-specific DNA, or cell-free DNA fragments?
- Check the donor marker. Y-chromosome detection has different coverage from polymorphism-based identification and may not detect every possible donor cell.
- Identify the sample and cohort. Blood, brain, placenta and other tissues answer different questions. A surgical cohort may not represent healthy people.
- Separate detection from effect. Finding cells demonstrates presence; it does not demonstrate repair, harm or a causal disease mechanism.
- Look for publication status. A peer-reviewed review and a newly posted preprint carry different levels of established evidence.
For readers, the most accurate conclusion is limited but significant: cells can move between mother and fetus, some can persist for many years, and scientists are still determining what that persistence means in each tissue and circumstance.
