Micro systems technology (MST) is the engineering of miniature systems that integrate components such as sensors, actuators, electronics, mechanical structures, fluid-handling parts, or optical elements so they work together to perform a function. It is not simply the practice of making an object smaller: the defining idea is combining relevant functions into a compact system.
What does micro systems technology mean?
MST is an interdisciplinary approach to designing and integrating functional systems at small scales. Its contributing fields can include microelectronics, micromechanics, microsensors, microactuators, microfluidics, and microoptics. In a working microsystem, sensors can detect a condition, electronics can process information, and actuators or other elements can respond.
The components are often described at micrometer scales, but size alone does not define MST. A tiny component is not necessarily a microsystem; integration is central. The system is designed around a job, with its parts and functions working together.

The mix depends on what the system needs to do. A microsystem may include one or several of these functions:
#1 Best Overall
- Build a 37-Module Sensor Lab: Add motion, distance, light, sound, temperature, touch, display and control functions to compatible UNO, MEGA, Nano, ESP-32 or STM32 projects for prototyping, classroom experiments and maker builds
- Explore Input Sensors and Motion: Experiment with GY-521 motion sensing, PIR detection, ultrasonic ranging, temperature and humidity, DS18B20, flame, Hall, touch, light, sound, tilt, tracking and obstacle-avoidance modules
- Add Displays, Timing and Control: Use the LCD1602, DS1307 real-time clock, joystick, rotary encoder, relay, buzzers, RGB LEDs and infrared modules to build clocks, alarms, counters, status displays and automated projects
- Follow Guided Projects Materials: Use digital tutorial materials, datasheets, wiring diagrams and example code for compatible UNO R3, MEGA 2560 and Nano boards, then adjust thresholds, timing and logic to create custom experiments
- Module-Only Expansion Kit: Controller board, USB cable, breadboard and jumper wires are not included; use 6.5–9 V DC only with the included power module, verify pin requirements before wiring and keep the laser emitter away from eyes
- Sensing: Detecting a physical, chemical, or biological condition.
- Actuation: Producing movement or another controlled response.
- Electronic processing: Handling or interpreting signals from sensors.
- Mechanical structures: Supporting movement, measurement, or other physical operations.
- Fluid handling: Moving or controlling small amounts of fluid through microchannels, pumps, or valves.
- Optical functions: Working with light as part of sensing, transmission, or control.
These functions may be integrated in different ways; MST does not prescribe one fixed component list or architecture.
How is MST different from MEMS?
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and MST overlap substantially. MEMS commonly refers to systems that combine mechanical elements with electrical or electronic functions, such as sensors and actuators built on a silicon wafer. Some technical and regional usage treats MEMS and MST as equivalent terms; one academic account notes that MEMS have also been called MST in Europe and micromachines in Japan.

Usage is not uniform, however. MST can be used as a broader framing for integrated microsystems that include functions such as microfluidics or microoptics, rather than focusing only on electromechanical elements. The safest interpretation is to follow the context in which a source uses the term, rather than assume MST and MEMS always mean exactly the same thing.

What are examples of micro systems technology?
Common examples include:
- Accelerometers: Detect acceleration or changes in motion.
- Gyroscopes: Measure angular motion or rotation.
- Pressure sensors: Detect pressure and convert it into a usable signal.
- Biosensors: Detect or measure biological substances or activity.
- Micropumps and microvalves: Move or regulate fluid at small scales.
These examples illustrate different functions rather than define an exhaustive catalog. A useful way to understand any example is to ask what it senses or controls, which components it integrates, and how those components serve the system’s purpose.

How does an MST product move from concept to manufacture?
A historical European Commission CORDIS project record describes a general development sequence for complete MST products. It is a useful outline of stages, not a claim that every present-day project follows an identical process.
- Concept: Define the intended function and the system-level idea.
- Feasibility study: Assess whether the proposed system can be realized.
- Design: Develop the integrated system and its components.
- Prototype: Build a version for evaluation.
- Test: Check whether it performs as intended.
- Manufacture: Produce the completed product.
Is MST a formal standard or a market category?
The available technical descriptions support MST as an engineering field and design approach, but do not establish a single formal international standard definition. They also do not establish a current market-size or adoption figure. Treat claims about a precise boundary, market scale, or universal terminology cautiously unless they are tied to a specific standard, source, and date.
