Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is Konami’s official remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It is not an announced replacement for the Metal Gear Solid franchise, a new sequel, or a reboot of the wider saga.
The word “replacement” is useful only if you mean an updated version of one game. Delta keeps the original story, characters, voice acting, music, and survival-stealth foundation, then rebuilds presentation and controls for current hardware. Players who want the original release can still choose the separate Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1.
What “official replacement” means in this case
Konami announced Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater as a faithful remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, which first appeared in 2004. That makes Delta the company’s modern version of MGS3, not a successor to every game carrying the Metal Gear Solid name.
The distinction matters because “replacement” can imply a franchise handover. Konami has not described Delta as a new chapter that continues beyond MGS3 or as a reboot that erases the earlier games. Its stated purpose is to recreate the original story and game design while modernizing how the game looks, sounds, and plays.

Konami’s 2023 development announcement said the team was working toward “a faithful recreation of the original story and game design,” while evolving the gameplay with updated visuals and a seamless user experience. PlayStation’s FAQ uses similarly precise wording: “METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is a faithful remake of 2004’s METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER.”
Where Delta fits in the Metal Gear timeline
Delta tells the origin story of Naked Snake, the character who later becomes Big Boss. Its Cold War setting comes before the other major events in the saga, so it is chronologically the first main story. That position makes it a practical entry point for someone who has never played a Metal Gear game, even though it was originally designed as the third numbered Metal Gear Solid title.
The mission and its stakes
The story sends Naked Snake into Soviet territory on a mission involving the scientist Sokolov. The operation changes when Snake’s mentor, The Boss, defects and Sokolov is captured. What begins as a military infiltration becomes a prolonged fight for survival in hostile terrain.

Delta preserves that narrative rather than replacing it with a new premise. The political setting, character relationships, betrayals, and transformation of Snake are the same story elements that define the original MGS3.
Why the chronological position helps newcomers
Because the game follows Snake before he becomes Big Boss, new players can begin with the earliest point in the saga’s chronology. They do not need to know later events to understand the mission, its characters, or its central conflict. Returning players may instead approach Delta as a new presentation of a story they already know.
What remains the same as the original Snake Eater
Story and characters
Konami describes the remake as retaining the original story and characters. The main cast, Cold War mission, and Snake’s relationship with The Boss remain the narrative foundation. Delta is therefore a remake rather than a reimagining that changes the plot’s direction.

- SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators
Voice acting and music
PlayStation’s FAQ specifically lists the voice acting and music as the same. That preserves the performances and musical identity associated with MGS3, even though the surrounding presentation has been rebuilt for newer systems.
Stealth-survival gameplay
The core genre is unchanged: Delta remains a story-driven survival stealth-action game. Its play revolves around choosing when to avoid detection, when to fight, and how to stay alive in the environment.
- Camouflage: Players use camouflage to reduce the chance of being noticed in different surroundings.
- Gadgets and equipment: Tools support infiltration, reconnaissance, and combat decisions.
- Close-quarters combat: Hand-to-hand encounters remain part of Snake’s toolkit.
- Hunting and gathering: Survival involves obtaining food and managing the demands of the environment.
- Environmental traps: The surroundings can be used against enemies or to create tactical opportunities.
These systems are not incidental details; they are the loop that distinguishes Snake Eater from a conventional action game. Delta modernizes the interface and presentation around that loop instead of turning the game into a different genre.
Returning side experiences
Konami also lists familiar bonus content. The GUY SAVAGE nightmare sequence returns. Snake Vs Monkey is included for PlayStation 5 and Steam, while an Xbox Series X|S version receives a Snake Vs Bomberman variant. These extras do not change the main campaign, but they help Delta retain the playful side content associated with the original release.
What Delta changes
A new engine and rebuilt visuals
Delta is rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. The remake uses that technology to deliver substantially updated graphics while recreating the same setting, characters, and events. The purpose is visual modernization, not a new storyline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The remake’s visual upgrade is therefore the most obvious difference when the two versions are viewed side by side.

Three-dimensional audio
Delta adds 3D audio to its modern presentation. Directional sound can make environmental cues, movement, and threats easier to place in space when using compatible equipment. This changes how the game communicates information without changing the identity of its music or the underlying events.
Optional modern controls
The remake offers an optional modern control style alongside its faithful recreation of the original design. Players who find older control conventions unfamiliar can use the newer scheme, while veterans can approach the game in a way that feels closer to the classic release.
That choice is significant because control preference is one of the biggest practical differences between playing a 2004 game and playing a current remake. Delta does not require every player to adopt the same control philosophy.
A smoother presentation, not a different campaign
Konami and PlayStation frame the changes as modernization around the original game. The remake improves the audiovisual layer and user experience while retaining the campaign’s structure, characters, and survival-stealth design. Claims that Delta is a sequel or a complete reinvention go beyond what the publisher has announced.

Is Delta a replacement for the original game?
There are two reasonable answers, depending on what “replacement” means.
As a publisher-defined franchise successor: no
Konami has announced Delta as a remake of MGS3, not as a new successor to the entire Metal Gear Solid series. It does not replace the other games in the saga, and it does not establish a new post-MGS3 storyline.

As a modern way to play Snake Eater: potentially
In a GamesRadar report on an interview with series producer Noriaki Okamura, he described Delta as both a companion to and a replacement for the original Snake Eater, while emphasizing that players should decide. He said, “For new users who are just getting started with the MGS series, MGS Delta may be more familiar. For long-time MGS series fans, the Master collection version may feel superior,” and added that Konami would leave the decision to players.

I don’t know. I just think it’s a different, upgraded version.” Those are reported interview remarks, not a formal declaration that the original has been withdrawn from the series or made obsolete for everyone.
The original-game option: Master Collection Vol. 1
Delta should not be confused with Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. Konami announced the collection as a separate product for playing earlier games on newer platforms. Vol. 1 includes:
- Metal Gear Solid
- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in its HD Collection version
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in its HD Collection version
The collection’s MGS3 is an earlier version, while Delta is the rebuilt remake. Someone choosing the collection is choosing historical continuity and the original game’s presentation; someone choosing Delta is choosing the same central adventure with current-generation audiovisual and control updates.

Choose Delta if you are new to the series
Delta presents the saga’s chronological starting point with current visuals, 3D audio, and an optional modern control style. New players who are less comfortable with older game conventions may find that combination easier to approach.

Use both if you want context
Playing both versions provides the clearest view of what a faithful remake changes. The story, characters, voice acting, music, and gameplay foundation give the comparison continuity, while the engine, audio, and control updates show where Delta modernizes the experience.
Release dates and platforms
Release information differs by source and geography, so the dates should not be treated as one universal launch timestamp.
| Source and region context | Date or availability stated |
|---|---|
| Official PlayStation page | August 28, 2025; lists a PlayStation 5 Standard Edition |
| Konami US launch announcement | Dated August 27, 2025; says the game was then available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam |
The one-day difference reflects the source and regional context rather than evidence of two different games. Platform editions and store availability can change by territory, so a current local listing is the appropriate place to verify what can be purchased.

What the “official replacement” label gets right—and wrong
It is accurate to call Delta the official modern remake of MGS3. It is inaccurate to call it a confirmed replacement for the whole Metal Gear Solid franchise, a sequel to the original series, or a reboot that makes every earlier game irrelevant.
The most precise description is: Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is Konami’s faithful, current-generation remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It preserves the story and survival-stealth identity while rebuilding graphics, audio, and controls. Whether it becomes a player’s preferred version is a matter of priorities, not a company-wide succession decision.
