Melanotan II is a synthetic peptide sold or promoted online to darken skin. It is not an approved tanning treatment in the United States or Australia: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has described it as an unapproved new drug, while Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says products containing it are not approved for supply as tanning agents. Reported effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss and facial redness, with additional concerns such as changing moles or freckles, kidney dysfunction and brain swelling. Product contents and strength can also be unreliable, and the pigmentation does not protect skin from ultraviolet (UV) damage.
What Melanotan II is
Melanotan II belongs to a group of synthetic peptides called melanotans. The TGA describes melanotans as substances intended to increase melanin production, creating a darker or “tanned” appearance. Products may be labeled Melanotan I or Melanotan II, and marketing has included injectable products as well as nasal sprays sold online.
A darker skin tone is a cosmetic effect, not evidence that the product has been evaluated as a medicine for tanning or skin protection. Melanotan II should not be confused with an approved sunscreen or with a regulated cosmetic self-tanner. Its presence in a vial, nasal spray or other product does not show that the product has passed a regulator’s quality, safety or effectiveness review.
Is Melanotan II approved?
Approval depends on the country and the specific legal category. The available regulator statements establish the following positions for the United States and Australia; they do not determine the law in every other country.

| Jurisdiction | Regulator and date | What the regulator says |
|---|---|---|
| United States | FDA, FY 2007 enforcement report | Melanotan II was described as an unapproved new drug marketed as an injectable tanning product. The FDA said there was no evidence it was generally recognized as safe and effective for its labeled uses. |
| Australia | TGA, January 24, 2025; August 17, 2026 | The TGA says melanotan tanning products are unapproved, prescription-only substances when treated as therapeutic products, and that no Melanotan II products are included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) or approved for supply as tanning agents. |
What the FDA record means
The FDA’s FY 2007 report records an August 30, 2007 warning letter to Melanocorp concerning the illegal sale and marketing of Melanotan II. The agency characterized the product as an unapproved new drug and rejected the idea that its labeled uses had been established as safe and effective. This is historical U.S. enforcement context; it should not be read as a complete list of every later FDA action or as a worldwide legal ruling.
What the Australian status means
In a January 24, 2025 consumer warning, the TGA said melanotan tanning products were being promoted and sold online and warned that they had not been approved as tanning agents. In an August 17, 2026 advisory, the agency reported laboratory confirmation of Melanotan II in seized nasal sprays and stated that no Melanotan II products were in the ARTG. “Prescription-only” does not mean “approved for cosmetic tanning”; it describes a legal supply category, while the TGA’s statement addresses the absence of an approved tanning product.
Reported side effects and health concerns
The TGA lists several effects reported by people using melanotan products. These are regulator-reported effects and concerns, not guarantees that every user will experience them. The reviewed warnings do not provide incidence percentages, dose-response information or a reliable way to predict an individual’s risk.

Commonly reported effects
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Facial redness
Because products can have uncertain ingredients and concentrations, a person may not know what exposure produced a particular reaction. An online label, “triple strength” claim or stated amount is not a substitute for independent quality testing.
More serious reported concerns
The TGA separately identifies reports and safety concerns involving increased numbers or changes in moles and freckles, kidney dysfunction and brain swelling in connection with Melanotan II. These reports do not establish that every case was caused by the peptide, nor do they supply a population-wide probability. They do establish why regulators advise against using unapproved products and why a health professional should assess symptoms or skin changes after use.
Why changing moles or freckles matter
A new, enlarging or changing mole or freckle warrants professional assessment regardless of the suspected cause. Melanotan-related pigmentation can make it harder for a person to judge whether a mark has changed, so users should not assume that a darker spot is merely a cosmetic effect. Do not delay medical advice while trying to identify the product’s exact ingredients yourself.

Uncertain ingredients and strength
Unapproved products have not undergone the quality controls applied to authorized medicines. The TGA warns that consumers cannot be certain of an unapproved product’s ingredients, strength or overall quality. That uncertainty applies to products advertised as injections, nasal sprays or other formulations.

In its 2026 testing, the TGA examined five seized nasal spray bottles labeled “Pure Tans Triple Strength 30 MG.” Using the bottles’ labeled 20 mL volumes, the agency estimated Melanotan II amounts ranging from 22 mg to 54 mg across those five samples.
| Finding | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|
| Estimated Melanotan II amount | 22–54 mg across five seized bottles |
| Label claim | “Triple Strength 30 MG” |
| Labeled bottle volume | 20 mL per bottle |
| What the result does not show | It does not establish the contents or strength of all melanotan products. |
The spread between the estimated amounts illustrates why a label cannot be treated as a dependable measurement. It is a finding from five seized bottles, not a survey of every product sold online.

Does a Melanotan II tan protect against the sun?
No. Pigmentation produced by melanotan does not provide the UV protection supplied by a suitable sunscreen. The TGA states that melanotan-induced pigmentation does not protect against UV exposure in the way sunscreen does. The FDA likewise says that a tan is a sign of UV skin damage and does not protect against sunburn or other skin damage.
There is no safe-tan exception for a darker baseline color. UV exposure can still damage skin, and a melanotan-related color change should not be used to justify longer time in direct sunlight, tanning beds or other UV sources.
How to read a sunless-tanning label
Sunless tanning products are designed to color the skin without intentional UV exposure, but they may or may not include sun protection. According to the FDA, only a sunless tanner that contains sunscreen ingredients and displays an SPF label may provide the protection represented by that SPF. A cosmetic colorant without an SPF label should not be treated as sunscreen.

| Product purpose | What it can and cannot establish |
|---|---|
| Melanotan II product | Promoted to darken skin; not an approved tanning treatment in the cited U.S. and Australian regulator records; pigmentation does not replace UV protection. |
| Sunless tanner without an SPF label | May change skin color cosmetically; the label does not promise UV protection. |
| Sunless tanner with sunscreen ingredients and an SPF label | May provide the labeled SPF protection when used as directed; it remains a separate cosmetic and sunscreen product, not a treatment for melanotan exposure. |
What to do if you have used Melanotan II
The TGA’s consumer advice is to stop using unapproved tanning products containing melanotan and speak with a health professional. That advice applies even if the product was sold as a “research” product, had a professional-looking label or produced the expected color.
- Stop using the product. Do not take another dose or attempt to adjust the amount based on the label.
- Keep the packaging. Bring the bottle, label and purchase details to a clinician if available. They may help identify what was claimed, although the label cannot prove the contents.
- Contact a health professional. Tell them the product name, form, approximate timing of use and any symptoms, including skin changes, nausea, headache, vomiting, appetite loss or facial redness.
- Arrange safe disposal. The TGA’s 2026 advisory says remaining product can be taken to a local pharmacy for disposal. Do not pass it to another person.
- Seek prompt medical care for concerning symptoms. Kidney problems, neurological symptoms or rapidly changing skin marks require professional assessment rather than self-treatment.
Sunscreen can reduce future UV exposure, but it does not remove Melanotan II from the body or treat a reaction to it. Do not use a self-tanner or additional melanotan to disguise a symptom.
Why online marketing can be misleading
Marketing often presents a darker color as proof that a product works. That is only evidence of a visible pigment change; it is not evidence of approved quality, safe ingredients or protection from skin damage. Claims that a product prevents skin cancer or replaces sunscreen are especially misleading. The FDA’s enforcement record describes such promotional claims in the context of an unapproved product, not as established medical benefits.
Terms such as “natural,” “peptide,” “laboratory grade,” “research use” or “triple strength” do not create regulatory approval. Nor does a seller’s promise of a measured concentration establish that each bottle contains that amount. The TGA’s five-bottle finding demonstrates why strength can vary within products carrying the same label.
Key distinctions to remember
- Cosmetic color is not sun protection. A darker appearance does not make UV exposure safe.
- Prescription-only is not the same as approved for tanning. Australia’s regulator specifically says Melanotan II is not approved as a tanning agent.
- A reported effect is not a guaranteed outcome. Regulators list concerns without supplying incidence rates for users.
- One tested batch is not every product. The 22–54 mg result applies to five seized nasal sprays, not all online melanotan products.
- Stopping use is not the end of the response. A health professional should evaluate symptoms or changing moles, freckles and other marks.
Bottom line for prospective users
Melanotan II is an unapproved synthetic peptide promoted to darken skin, not a validated or approved tanning treatment in the U.S. and Australian regulator records discussed here. Its reported side effects range from headache and nausea to concerns involving skin changes, kidney dysfunction and brain swelling; the frequency of these outcomes is not established by the cited warnings. Product strength may be inconsistent, and any resulting pigmentation offers no substitute for sunscreen or other UV protection. If you have used it, stop and contact a health professional; take remaining product to a pharmacy for disposal where that option is available under local guidance.
