Melanin is a family of light-absorbing pigments that helps produce coloration in many animals. The two forms emphasized in comparative animal research are eumelanin, usually associated with black-to-brown shades, and pheomelanin, usually associated with yellow-to-red shades. An animal’s visible color also depends on how much pigment is present, its chemical quality, where it is deposited, tissue structure, and the lighting conditions. Melanin is therefore an important source of animal color, but it is not the explanation for every color.

What melanin is and how it makes color

Melanin is not one single molecule with one universal appearance. It is a family of pigments found across animal groups. A pigment contributes color by absorbing some wavelengths of visible light and leaving other wavelengths to be reflected, scattered, or transmitted to an observer. The balance of absorbed and returned light determines the color that appears.

In vertebrates, melanin is especially important in skin and in epidermal appendages such as hair and feathers. Specialized cells called melanocytes synthesize the pigment and package it into microscopic structures called melanosomes. Those melanosomes are then deposited in the tissue where coloration develops. The same basic pigment can consequently look different when it is present in different amounts, arranged in different patterns, or viewed through tissues with different optical properties.

The strongest evidence summarized here concerns vertebrates, particularly mammals and birds, with separate evidence describing insect functions. Animal groups do not all use melanin in the same way, so a mechanism documented in one group should not automatically be treated as universal.

The two principal melanin forms

Comparative sources commonly distinguish eumelanin and pheomelanin. Their typical color ranges are useful starting points, not exact guarantees: the final appearance depends on concentration, distribution, surrounding tissues, and other color-producing mechanisms.

Pigment type Typical color association Animal tissues discussed What the visible color still depends on
Eumelanin Black to brown Hair, skin, eyes, feathers, and other pigmented tissues in comparative vertebrate work Amount, chemical quality, spatial distribution, tissue structure, and illumination
Pheomelanin Yellow to reddish Hair, skin, eyes, feathers, and other pigmented tissues in comparative vertebrate work Amount, chemical quality, spatial distribution, tissue structure, and illumination

A 2003 comparative review by Ito and Wakamatsu, covering humans, mice, and other animals, stresses that hair, skin, and eye color depends on melanin’s quantity, quality, and distribution. This is why pigment identity alone cannot predict a precise shade. Two tissues containing the same broad melanin type can look different if one contains more pigment, places it in a different layer, or combines it with other optical features.

How mammals and birds produce melanin-based color

1. Melanocytes make the pigment

In mammals and birds, melanocytes are the specialized pigment-producing cells. They synthesize melanin rather than simply absorbing it from the environment. The newly made pigment is packaged into melanosomes, which provide a controlled way to move and store it inside cells.

2. Melanosomes deliver pigment to growing tissues

Melanosomes are deposited in tissues that will be visible at the surface. In mammals, that includes skin and hair. In birds, it includes skin and feathers. The location of deposition matters: pigment in a hair or feather shaft produces a different visual effect from pigment concentrated in an underlying skin layer.

3. Amount and placement create patterns

Color patterns emerge when pigment production or deposition changes from one region to another. A darker patch can contain more melanin, melanosomes that are distributed more densely, or a different arrangement within the tissue. A lighter patch can reflect a lower local concentration or a different distribution. These are pattern-level outcomes, not evidence that every patch uses a different pigment.

Why pigment type alone does not determine an animal’s color

Visible coloration is the combined result of pigment chemistry and optical context. Four variables are particularly important:

  • Quantity: More or less melanin changes how strongly selected wavelengths are absorbed.
  • Quality: Chemical differences within the broad eumelanin or pheomelanin categories affect optical behavior.
  • Distribution: Pigment can be concentrated in particular cells, layers, hairs, feathers, or body regions.
  • Light and tissue structure: The same tissue can appear different under different illumination or when microscopic structures alter scattering and reflection.

This explains why a simple statement such as “eumelanin makes an animal brown” is only a typical association. Eumelanin is generally linked with black-to-brown coloration, and pheomelanin with yellow-to-red coloration, but neither range is a one-to-one color code.

How different vertebrates build color patterns

A 2023 review of vertebrate coloration describes important differences among major groups. Mammals and birds rely substantially on pigment deposition in epidermal appendages, especially hair and feathers. Amphibians, reptiles, and fish can produce complex patterns through three-dimensional arrangements of pigments and light-interfering substances in the integument, the body’s outer covering.

Mammals and birds

In these groups, the position and amount of melanin in hair, feathers, and skin strongly influence visible pattern. A region may differ from its neighbor because melanocytes make different quantities of pigment or because melanosomes are distributed differently as an appendage grows. The resulting stripes, spots, bands, or uniform fields are therefore spatial patterns of deposition as well as pigment chemistry.

Amphibians, reptiles, and fish

The vertebrate review discusses several classes of pigment cells in these animals. Melanophores contain dark melanin; xanthophores or erythrophores contain yellow or red pigments; and reflective iridophores contain light-interfering structures. Their three-dimensional arrangement can combine absorption, reflection, and scattering to create a pattern that cannot be explained by melanin alone.

These cell types are examples reported for the groups covered by the review, not a claim that every amphibian, reptile, or fish has the same cellular arrangement. Species differ in which pigments and reflective structures they possess and in how those components are organized.

Not every animal color is caused by melanin

Melanin is only one contributor to animal coloration. Carotenoids and other pigments can supply colors that melanin does not produce by itself. In addition, structural coloration arises when microscopic or nanoscopic features interfere with light. Such structures can selectively reflect or scatter wavelengths, creating vivid appearances without relying on a corresponding colored pigment.

Structural and pigmentary mechanisms can also operate together. A tissue may contain melanin that absorbs stray light while an organized structure reflects a particular wavelength, or it may combine melanin with another pigment. Environmental illumination changes the light reaching the tissue and the light returning to an observer, so an appearance can vary even when the underlying pigment arrangement is unchanged.

For that reason, you cannot identify an animal’s pigment chemistry from a photograph or from visible color alone. A bright red, blue, green, brown, or black appearance does not by itself reveal whether melanin, another pigment, a reflective structure, or a combination is responsible.

What melanin does in insects

Insects use melanin in contexts that extend beyond visible coloration. A review of insect and higher-animal melanogenesis describes roles for insect melanin in exoskeletal pigmentation, cuticle hardening, wound healing, and innate immune responses.

Exoskeletal pigmentation

Melanin can darken the insect exoskeleton, contributing to its external pattern and appearance. This is the insect counterpart to pigment-based coloration, but it should not be assumed to follow the same deposition process described for mammalian hair or bird feathers.

Cuticle hardening

The review links insect melanogenesis with sclerotization, the process that hardens the cuticle. In this setting, melanin-related chemistry is connected to the mechanical properties of the outer body covering, not merely to its color.

Wound healing and innate immunity

Insect melanin also participates in responses to injury and in innate immune defenses. These roles show that melanin can be biologically useful even when its visible color is not the main outcome. The detailed relationships among melanogenic and sclerotinogenic pathways remain partly unresolved, so mechanistic claims should stay within the insect systems actually studied.

How scientists distinguish eumelanin from pheomelanin

Visible inspection is not enough to determine which melanin is present. The 2003 comparative review by Ito and Wakamatsu describes using chemical degradation products of eumelanin and pheomelanin for analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This approach measures chemical markers generated from the pigment and provides evidence about composition that color photographs cannot supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HPLC results still need to be interpreted in context. A sample can contain more than one pigment, and the observed appearance can also reflect tissue structure, other pigments, and lighting. Chemical identification answers what pigment-related compounds are present; it does not, by itself, explain every aspect of the animal’s pattern.

Common mistakes when explaining animal melanin

  • “All animal colors are melanin-based.” False. Other pigments and structural coloration contribute substantially in many animals.
  • “Eumelanin always looks black and pheomelanin always looks red.” Too absolute. Those are typical ranges, modified by quantity, quality, distribution, tissue optics, and light.
  • “Every animal makes melanin in the same cells and deposits it in the same structures.” Unsupported. Mammalian and avian melanocytes and melanosomes are well described, while other groups use different pigment-cell systems and arrangements.
  • “A visible shade identifies the underlying chemistry.” Unreliable. Pigments can overlap visually, and structural features can dominate the appearance.
  • “Melanin’s only purpose is coloration.” Incomplete. Insects also use melanin-associated processes in cuticle hardening, wound healing, and innate immunity.

A practical way to interpret an animal’s color

  1. Ask whether the evidence concerns a pigment or a structure. First separate absorption by a pigment from reflection or interference caused by tissue architecture.
  2. Identify the likely pigment class. In vertebrate comparative work, eumelanin and pheomelanin are the principal melanin forms discussed; carotenoids and other pigments may also be present.
  3. Check where the color is produced. Hair, feathers, skin, scales, and insect cuticle do not have identical optical or developmental arrangements.
  4. Look for spatial organization. Bands, spots, and gradients can result from local differences in pigment amount or from layered arrangements of several pigment cells.
  5. Account for illumination. The apparent color depends on the light source and viewing conditions as well as on the tissue.
  6. Use chemical analysis for certainty. Methods such as degradation-product analysis followed by HPLC are needed when pigment identity matters.

What to remember

Melanin is a family of pigments that helps create animal color by absorbing selected wavelengths of light. Eumelanin usually contributes black-to-brown coloration, while pheomelanin usually contributes yellow-to-red coloration. In mammals and birds, melanocytes package melanin into melanosomes and deposit it in skin, hair, and feathers. Other vertebrates can organize multiple pigment-cell types and reflective structures in three dimensions, and insects use melanin in several physiological processes beyond appearance. Because pigments, tissue architecture, and lighting work together, no single visible color proves which mechanism produced it.
