MAYA is not shown as a public AI app for consumers. Mayo Clinic describes it as an employee-facing conversational assistant for searching Mayo information and, for appropriately authorized users, interacting with the clinic’s longitudinal patient record. Mayo’s study listing says it is evaluating MAYA’s data-retrieval performance, but publishes no results. That makes a consumer-style product verdict or claims of proven clinical benefit unsupported.

What is Mayo Clinic’s MAYA AI?

Mayo Clinic describes MAYA as an AI assistant with a natural-language conversational interface to its Longitudinal Patient Record. Its landing page warns that MAYA Clinical can access protected health information (PHI), so users should use it only when they have an appropriate clinical or business need. Mayo Clinic’s MAYA page

The official study listing names the project “Performance of Mayo Clinic Digital Assistant (Maya).” It describes an observational study intended to evaluate MAYA’s performance and effectiveness in enhancing data retrieval. The listing identifies an Arizona site and IRB identifier 24-005534. It does not report a performance result. Mayo Clinic study listing

Who can use MAYA?

The study listing says Mayo Clinic employees with Mayo credentials can participate, and access to the longitudinal patient record requires employee credentials plus authorization for electronic medical record access. It says all users may query intranet material, but non-Mayo employees are ineligible for the listed study. Its eligibility information was last updated June 14, 2024; the listing also cautions that study status can change. The listed location was closed for enrollment when reviewed.

So, based on the available official description, MAYA should be understood as a restricted Mayo workplace tool, not a consumer chatbot available to download or buy. The listing does not establish a public release, pricing, or a current version number.

Does MAYA work well?

The available study record explains what Mayo intends to evaluate—data retrieval—but does not provide results. There is no published evidence in the cited material that establishes MAYA’s accuracy, time savings, clinical outcomes, or superiority to other assistants. No independent test is described either. It is therefore not possible to give an evidence-based performance score or declare that MAYA lives up to the hype.

That is different from saying the system does not work; it means the public evidence cited here does not demonstrate how well it works. A fair assessment will require published results or other verifiable performance evidence.

How MAYA fits into Mayo Clinic’s broader AI work

MAYA is one tool in a much larger institutional AI effort. Mayo Clinic says it has more than 200 AI projects at stages ranging from feasibility and data-availability checks through algorithm development and clinical implementation. The portfolio includes work to predict or identify conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancers. That figure describes projects across stages, not 200 finished products, and it does not measure MAYA’s performance. Mayo Clinic’s artificial intelligence overview

On June 2, 2026, Mayo Clinic announced a separate collaboration with Microsoft to develop a healthcare-specific frontier AI model. Mayo said the effort would combine its clinical expertise and de-identified clinical data with Microsoft’s AI, cloud, and engineering capabilities. The announcement described initial deployment in Mayo’s clinical environment; Microsoft said it planned to make access available through Azure Foundry APIs. The cited announcement does not establish that MAYA uses this model. Mayo Clinic and Microsoft collaboration announcement

What MAYA’s purpose means for patients

Because MAYA is described as an employee-facing information and record-access tool, it should not be confused with an open medical-advice chatbot. The cited sources do not show that patients can use it to diagnose symptoms, choose treatment, or decide whether to seek urgent care.

Mayo Clinic’s public guidance on health AI recommends using AI for general education, plain-language explanations, and preparing questions for a care team—not as a substitute for a clinician. AI can be confidently wrong, reflect bias, repeat misinformation, and respond differently to small wording changes. Mayo also advises against putting identifying personal information or medical records into public or free AI platforms. Mayo Clinic: “Can you trust AI for health advice?”

For symptom questions, Mayo suggests using AI to learn about common causes, understand medical terms, prepare for an appointment, or organize a symptom timeline. It warns against using AI for urgent or severe symptoms, diagnosis, or decisions about how quickly to seek care: a chatbot may miss an emergency or overstate urgency, and test results alone are not enough to diagnose a condition. Verdict: Is MAYA worth the hype?

MAYA is an interesting example of a health system applying conversational AI to its internal information and clinical-record environment. But the evidence available to the public supports a description of its intended role and access restrictions—not a claim that it is a proven, public-facing product. If you are a patient looking for a health chatbot, MAYA is not presented as an option for you. If you are evaluating its technology, wait for published performance results before treating claims of effectiveness as established.
