Malvertising is the use of online advertising to spread malware. A malicious ad can redirect you to a fraudulent website, prompt a malware-laced software update, exploit a browser vulnerability in a drive-by download, or imitate legitimate software while hiding a backdoor. In some cases, the ad or redirect runs without a deliberate click.
Spyware is one possible result. It can monitor browsing, record keystrokes, display unwanted pop-ups, redirect searches, or allow other control of the device. The safest response is to avoid downloading from ads, keep your operating system and browser current, scan promptly after suspicious activity, and secure accounts from a trusted device if an infection is suspected.
What malvertising means
The word malvertising combines “malicious” and “advertising.” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services uses it for online advertising that spreads malware. The advertisement may look ordinary and appear on a legitimate site; the harmful part can be a redirect, a script, a fake download page, or code hidden behind an apparently genuine application.

Criminals can abuse any of those steps by submitting harmful creative, inserting redirect logic, or abusing a third-party script. A reputable publisher therefore does not automatically make every ad shown on a page safe.

Malvertising is different from an ordinary misleading advertisement. Its purpose or effect is to deliver malware, steal information, or gain unauthorized access. Spyware is malware designed to observe or interfere with device use. The Federal Trade Commission says spyware may send pop-up ads, redirect a computer to unwanted sites, monitor internet activity, or record keystrokes. A campaign can install spyware directly or install a backdoor that later fetches it.
Can an ad install spyware without a click?
Yes, although the exact path depends on the campaign and the device. Automatic redirects can occur while an advertisement or page is being rendered. A browser or plug-in vulnerability can also let exploit code install spyware in a drive-by download. The FTC has described drive-by downloads as a way to install spyware even when the browser’s default security level has not been changed.
Not every ad exposure causes an infection. Current browsers and security tools block many known malicious scripts, and an exploit generally needs a matching weakness. However, “I did not click” is not proof that nothing happened. A redirect may have opened a hostile page, or code may have attempted an exploit before any visible warning appeared.

How a malicious ad reaches a device
1. Ad auction and creative delivery
When a page loads, an advertising system selects a creative and supplies it to the publisher’s page. A criminal may submit a malicious creative directly or hide the harmful behavior in a chain of third-party calls. Google’s ad-management guidance describes automatic redirects as malvertising and notes that third-party JavaScript libraries can bypass protections by rendering content inside friendly frames. Those calls make it harder for a publisher to see what the visitor ultimately receives.
Ad networks scan creatives and can prohibit certain fourth-party calls, but controls are not identical across every network or publisher. A campaign may also change its behavior after approval, show harmless content to reviewers, or target only particular locations, devices, or referrers.
2. Traffic distribution and filtering
The ad or landing page can send selected visitors through a traffic-distribution system (TDS). The FBI describes TDS technology as routing visitors to different destinations after they visit a webpage, click an advertisement, sign up for an offer, or download an application. Criminals use fraudulent ad links, search-engine-optimization poisoning, phishing, and compromised websites to begin the redirection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA TDS can check details such as browser type, operating system, location, referrer, or whether the visitor has already seen the campaign. One person may see an ordinary page while another is sent to a fake login form or a page claiming that a browser, media player, or security component needs an urgent update. The visible domain can change several times, so the first website you recognize is not necessarily the final destination.

3. Exploit-based drive-by download
In a drive-by attack, code delivered by the ad or landing page probes for a weakness in the browser, an extension, a plug-in, or another component that processes web content. If the exploit succeeds, spyware or another payload can be installed without the normal “Do you want to download this file?” sequence.
This route is more autonomous than a fake-download campaign: the visitor may only have loaded a page. It still depends on a vulnerability that the attacker can exploit and on the device’s defenses failing to block the code. Updating the operating system, browser, and security software removes many known opportunities, which is why delayed updates increase exposure.
4. Fake software or a hidden backdoor
Some ads imitate popular applications, security products, browser updates, or artificial-intelligence tools. The landing page may copy a real vendor’s colors, wording, and download button. The installer can contain spyware directly, or it can install what appears to be the real application and use a backdoor to fetch malware later.
The FTC warns that some advertisements lead to the real software but download malware through a backdoor, making the compromise difficult to recognize. A genuine-looking application and a familiar logo therefore do not establish that the download is safe. The reliable check is whether you reached the vendor by typing its known address or using a bookmark, rather than by following an advertisement.

Malvertising scenarios compared
| Scenario | Is a click required? | What happens | What you may see | Primary mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic redirect | Sometimes no | The ad or script sends the browser to an attacker-controlled destination, potentially through a TDS. | A new tab, unexpected page, or rapid sequence of domains. | Close the tab; keep the browser and security software updated; investigate persistent redirects. |
| Drive-by exploit | No deliberate click may be needed | Code exploits a browser or plug-in vulnerability and installs spyware or another payload. | Often no normal download prompt; the page may appear to load normally. | Apply updates, remove obsolete plug-ins, and run a trusted malware scan. |
| Fake-download campaign | Usually yes | A cloned site persuades you to download and run a malicious installer. | Urgent update language, fake scan results, or a download that does not match the vendor. | Do not run the file; obtain software from the vendor’s typed address; scan if it was opened. |
| Real app with a backdoor | Usually yes | The ad leads to genuine-looking software while a hidden mechanism delivers malware. | The application may work, so there may be no immediate warning. | Use the vendor’s direct site and current security software; monitor for the warning signs below. |
Automatic redirects and drive-by exploits give the attacker more control because they require less cooperation. Fake-download and backdoor campaigns rely more on convincing you to accept a file or permission, but they can be highly effective because the page appears legitimate.
How to recognize a possible spyware infection
A single symptom has many possible causes, so none is conclusive by itself. Several changes appearing after a suspicious ad, redirect, or download deserve prompt investigation. The FTC lists these warning signs:
- The computer becomes unusually slow, freezes, or crashes.
- Your home page changes or searches are redirected to unfamiliar sites.
- New toolbars, extensions, or add-ons appear without your intentional installation.
- Pop-ups become frequent, including when no browser page is open.
- Operating-system errors recur unexpectedly.
- Security or administration tools, such as Task Manager, are disabled.
- Messages are sent from your email or social accounts that you did not write.
Also note the timing and scope: which ad or page you visited, whether a file was downloaded, what permissions were approved, and whether symptoms affect one browser or the whole device. That information helps a support professional distinguish a browser setting from a system-level compromise.

If you only opened the ad or a redirect
- Close the unexpected tab or window. Do not call a phone number shown in a pop-up, and do not grant remote access.
- Do not enter a password, payment detail, recovery code, or other sensitive information on the destination page.
- Check the browser’s downloads list and remove files you did not intentionally request. Do not open an unfamiliar installer to inspect it.
- Install pending operating-system, browser, and security updates from the device’s normal settings.
- Run a full scan with reputable, current security software configured to scan new files.
If you downloaded or opened a file
- Stop using the device for banking, shopping, email, password management, and other sensitive accounts.
- Disconnect it from networks if your security software or a trusted technician advises doing so, especially if suspicious activity is continuing.
- Update or install trusted security software through its normal application or the vendor’s typed address, then run a full scan.
- Follow the scanner’s quarantine or removal instructions. Do not restore a detected file merely because the program name looks familiar.
- From a device you trust, change passwords for accounts used on the affected computer. Start with email, financial services, password managers, and accounts that can reset other passwords.
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever it is offered, preferably with an authenticator app or security key when supported.
- Contact your bank or service provider promptly if payment information was entered or unauthorized transactions appear.
If the computer remains unstable, redirects continue, security tools are disabled, or you cannot complete a scan, use a trusted device to contact a reputable support provider. A persistent compromise may require specialist cleanup or a verified reinstall rather than repeated attempts to delete individual files.

Preventing malvertising infections
For everyday browsing
- Do not download software from an advertisement. Type the vendor’s known web address into the address bar or use a bookmark you created previously.
- Keep updates automatic where available. Apply updates for the operating system, browser, extensions, and security software; many drive-by attacks depend on old vulnerabilities.
- Use current security software. Enable real-time protection and scanning of newly downloaded files, and investigate warnings instead of dismissing them.
- Treat urgency as a warning. Unexpected pop-ups, fake virus detections, demands to call a number, and “update now” messages inside a webpage are not proof that your device needs the offered fix.
- Review new browser add-ons. Remove extensions you did not install intentionally and keep only those from a source you trust.
For organizations
Organizations should combine technical controls with a clear response process. Standard users should not install software without approval, browsers and plug-ins should be patched centrally, and endpoint security should report detections. Staff training should emphasize that an advertisement is not a trusted software-distribution channel, even when it appears above ordinary search results.
After an incident, preserve the ad URL, redirect chain, downloaded filename, timestamps, and security alerts if doing so does not expose additional data. Those details can help an administrator block the campaign and determine which accounts or devices need review.
How publishers and ad networks reduce the risk
Malvertising is also a supply-chain problem. Publishers and ad platforms should scan submitted creatives, prohibit untrusted fourth-party calls, and isolate ad content with SafeFrames or equivalent controls. Isolation limits what an advertisement can access and makes automatic navigation harder to hide from the page that embedded it.
Monitoring should continue after approval. A creative that behaved safely during review can later call a different server or redirect only a selected audience. Networks need processes for rapidly disabling a campaign, sharing indicators with publishers, and investigating complaints. Publishers should minimize unnecessary third-party JavaScript and keep their own content-management systems and servers patched, because a compromised site can become the starting point for the same redirect chain.
Why a legitimate-looking ad is not proof of safety
Visual credibility and destination credibility are separate questions. An attacker can copy a brand’s design, buy a sponsored placement, or send some visitors to the real application while targeting others with a backdoor. A lock icon only describes the connection to the current site; it does not certify the site’s intentions or the file it offers.
Use the address bar as a decision point. If you need software, leave the ad and enter the vendor’s address yourself. Check the exact domain before signing in, and avoid installing a file merely because a webpage claims that an update is required. This habit blocks the persuasion stage of many campaigns and reduces the chance that a malicious redirect becomes an installation.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Malvertising uses online advertising to deliver malware, including spyware.
- An infection can follow a redirect, a drive-by exploit, a deceptive download, or a hidden backdoor.
- A click is not always required, but many campaigns still depend on a user accepting a download or permission.
- Slowdowns, redirects, unfamiliar add-ons, pop-ups, disabled tools, and unexplained account messages warrant a scan.
- After a suspected infection, stop entering sensitive credentials, scan from trusted software, change passwords from a clean device, and enable two-factor authentication.
