Universes Beyond is Magic: The Gathering’s line of officially licensed crossover products. Wizards of the Coast takes characters, settings and visual identities from another franchise, then presents them on cards that use Magic’s normal rules. A crossover therefore changes the card’s story and presentation, not the underlying card game.
The practical questions are separate: what a particular product contains, which formats its cards can be played in, and whether that release exists on Magic’s digital platforms. Those answers vary by set, product type, card and release date.
What Universes Beyond means in MTG
Magic: The Gathering was originally built around its own settings, including planes such as Dominaria, Zendikar and Innistrad. Universes Beyond adds licensed worlds outside that original continuity. A set can feature a film, television, game, comic or literary property, with the outside franchise supplying the names, characters, locations and artwork.
The cards remain Magic cards. You still cast spells by paying mana, attack and block with creatures, use the stack to resolve spells and follow the same rules for deck construction and winning the game. A character from another universe is represented through Magic’s card types, abilities and color pie rather than through a separate rules engine.

Wizards treats a crossover release as a Magic set: a group of themed cards designed to be opened, collected and played together. The licensed setting is the creative layer; Magic’s rules, templating and tournament procedures are the game layer. That distinction explains why a crossover can feel authentic to its source material while still fitting into a draft pod or a normal constructed deck.
How a crossover set is designed and released
The outside franchise supplies the theme
Names, character identities, story references and visual treatments come from the partner property. A card may depict a recognizable hero, location or object, but it still has a Magic mana cost, card type, power and toughness (when applicable), and rules text. The set’s mechanics are written so players can use the cards with cards from other Magic releases.
Magic supplies the game system
There is no separate “Universes Beyond ruleset.” A player uses the Comprehensive Rules, the normal turn structure and the same formats used for in-world sets. A crossover card that says “draw a card,” “create a token” or “exile” means exactly what those terms mean elsewhere in Magic. The set’s reminder text and glossary, when present, explain Magic mechanics rather than franchise-specific gameplay.

The 2025-and-later booster-set policy
On October 25, 2024, Wizards announced that new Universes Beyond booster sets released in 2025 and later would be designed for all major Constructed formats, following the model used for in-world Magic booster sets. The goal was to give each new set a path into smaller formats and a more typical booster-set lifecycle instead of making every crossover a direct-to-Modern release.
“So, from now on, Universes Beyond sets will go through the more typical lifecycle of booster sets, with a lot of Limited play at release and contributions to each Constructed format in ratios appropriate to the size of the format, thus reducing the churn of the larger nonrotating formats.”

This is a forward-looking policy, not a retroactive rules change. It applies to the relevant booster sets released from 2025 onward; it does not alter the legality of older crossover releases. It also does not mean every card in every Universes Beyond product is legal everywhere. Commander decks, Jumpstart products, Special Guests and other supplemental cards can follow different legality rules.

Legality belongs to the specific card and product, not merely to the words “Universes Beyond” on the packaging. Check the current format rules, banned-and-restricted announcements and the card’s set information before entering an event.

Supplemental products require extra care. Wizards has said that new content in some Commander decks or Jumpstart products may be Eternal legal—meaning legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage—or that a reprinted card is legal wherever that existing card is already permitted. Do not infer legality from the franchise, the product’s marketing name or the fact that a card appears beside a booster set.
Why the exact card matters
A crossover can contain newly designed cards, reprints, promotional cards, Commander-only cards and Special Guests. A reprint inherits the format status of the card’s legal printings, while a new card follows the rules for its own release. A decklist for a sanctioned event should therefore be checked card by card rather than approved solely because the product is a Universes Beyond release.

Do Universes Beyond sets come to MTG Arena?
Tabletop availability and digital availability are separate questions. Wizards does not automatically release every crossover on Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic: The Gathering Online.

On April 21, 2025, Wizards introduced Through the Omenpaths, a digital Universes Within approach for selected Universes Beyond sets that would otherwise not arrive on those platforms. Through the Omenpaths cards are mechanically identical to their tabletop counterparts, but they use different names, art and other creative treatments. A player can therefore use the same game text without seeing the licensed presentation on the digital client.
Wizards described the approach as applying only to selected full sets that are legal in all formats, not to every Universes Beyond release or every supplemental product. Its announcement used FINAL FANTASY and Avatar: The Last Airbender as examples of sets coming to Arena and Magic Online at that time, while Marvel’s Spider-Man was given as an example that would not. Those examples describe the April 2025 announcement and are not a complete platform list for 2026 releases.
Before buying digital or paper copies, look for the specific set’s Arena and Magic Online announcement. A tabletop product can be fully playable while having no direct digital version, and a digital version can use Universes Within names and artwork even when its mechanics match the paper cards.
Universes Beyond release examples and dates
The following snapshot was listed on Wizards’ “Latest MTG Sets & Products” page on October 13, 2026. Release dates, product configurations and availability can change, so use it as a dated reference rather than a permanent calendar.

A listing does not establish that every product type is available for every release. A set may have boosters but no Commander deck, or a digital announcement may cover only part of the tabletop offering.
Which Magic crossover product should you buy?
Choose the product that matches what you intend to do. There is no universally best Universes Beyond product, and the named crossover may not offer every category.

For a first hands-on experience with a crossover, a Play Booster for the exact set is the straightforward choice when you want to draft or open packs. A Collector Booster makes sense only if premium treatments are your priority. A Commander deck is more efficient for a group that plans to play multiplayer immediately, while a Starter Kit is better when learning the basic turn sequence and card types matters more than collecting a particular character.

- Name the goal. Decide whether you want to learn, draft, play Commander, build a constructed deck, collect premium versions or play digitally.
- Identify the exact set and product. Write down the release name, product type and language. “Universes Beyond” is a product line, not one interchangeable set.
- Confirm contents. Read the set-specific product description for booster collation, decklists, included accessories and special treatments. General product-guide descriptions are not a guarantee of every release’s configuration.
- Check format legality card by card. Use the current format card pool and banned-and-restricted announcements. For Commander, also check color identity and the Commander ban list.
- Check digital status separately. Look for an Arena or Magic Online announcement. If Through the Omenpaths is used, expect different names, art and creative presentation despite matching mechanics.
- Verify timing and stock. Release dates, availability and product lineups are volatile. Recheck the official product page close to purchase or event registration.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every crossover is legal everywhere
The 2025 policy concerns new booster sets and does not rewrite older releases or supplemental products. Treat legality as a property of the card, product and format.
Assuming every crossover is on Arena
Digital releases are selective. A paper set can have no direct Arena or Magic Online implementation, while a Through the Omenpaths version can use Universes Within names and art.

Buying a product that does not match the play goal
Collector Boosters are poor substitutes for a Commander deck, and a Starter Kit is not a draft supply. Confirm that the crossover offers the category you want before ordering.
Using an old release date or product list
Wizards’ product page changes as schedules and configurations change. The dates in the table are explicitly a snapshot checked October 13, 2026, not a guarantee of current availability.
Confusing a reprint with a newly designed card
A reprint can retain legality from an earlier printing, while a new card follows the rules for its own release. Verify the individual card’s status when building a tournament deck.
What Universes Beyond changes—and what it does not
Universes Beyond changes Magic’s fictional frame: the characters, settings, names and artwork can come from a licensed universe. It does not create a separate card game, eliminate Magic’s normal mechanics or make product categories interchangeable. The 2025-and-later booster-set policy gives newer crossover sets a more conventional path through Limited and Constructed play, but supplemental products and older releases still require their own legality checks.
For any release, the reliable sequence is simple: identify the exact product, read its contents, check the intended format and then verify tabletop or digital availability. That process answers the three questions most often confused when a new crossover is announced.
