LMS.exe is usually associated with Intel’s Local Manageability Service (LMS), a Windows service that helps local applications communicate with Intel Active Management Technology (AMT). The filename alone cannot confirm that a particular copy on your PC is genuine: check the service’s executable path, the file’s publisher signature, and whether the software matches your computer’s manufacturer guidance before deciding what to do.

What is LMS.exe?

LMS.exe is the executable associated with Intel’s Local Manageability Service. Intel describes LMS as a Windows service for host platforms with Intel AMT Release 9.0 or later. It routes requests from local management applications to the local Intel AMT host through the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver. It can also receive AMT alerts and record them in the Windows Application event log. Intel’s AMT getting-started guide explains the service’s role and installation route.

Earlier Intel AMT releases, from 2.5 through 8.1, used the User Notification Service (UNS) for the earlier service role. OEM packages and filenames can vary by computer and platform generation, so the service name alone does not establish which exact package is installed.

Why is LMS.exe on my computer?

A PC may include LMS if its platform supports Intel AMT and its manufacturer’s MEI driver package includes the service. Intel says LMS is packaged with MEI drivers on PC manufacturer websites. Windows Automatic Update may install the MEI driver, but Intel says it does not install LMS or Intel Management and Security Status. Find the support page for your exact PC model and check the manufacturer’s chipset or Intel CSME driver listings.

#1 Best Overall

Having Intel hardware does not by itself mean that every PC needs LMS. Whether it is useful depends on platform support, AMT configuration, and whether local management or discovery features are used. Intel’s version-specific Intel AMT 11 developer guidance discusses LMS and MEI service requirements for AMT functions.

Is LMS.exe safe?

It can be a legitimate Intel service, but a matching filename is not proof of authenticity. Check several pieces of evidence together: the executable configured for the Windows service, the file’s location, its digital signature and publisher, and whether the installed driver package is expected for the PC’s model. An unexpected path or publisher mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof on its own that the file is malware.

Find the executable configured for the service

  1. In Task Manager, right-click the LMS.exe process and choose Open file location, if that option is available. Note the folder containing the file.
  2. Alternatively, open a Command Prompt and run sc qc LMS. Check the BINARY_PATH_NAME entry to see which executable the service is configured to launch. Intel’s mitigation guide identifies this command as a way to locate the configured path.
  3. In File Explorer, right-click the executable, open Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when present. Check the signer and signature status; then compare the file and installed driver package with the PC manufacturer’s support information for the exact model.

The service configuration command identifies the file the service points to; it does not certify the file as authentic. Intel’s public guidance does not establish one universal LMS.exe location for every Windows version and OEM installation, so do not judge a copy solely against a single path found online.

Use additional checks when evidence does not match

  • If this is an employer- or school-managed computer, ask the IT administrator before stopping the service or changing its files.
  • If the location, signature, or installed package does not match the PC manufacturer’s expected setup, investigate with reputable security software or the OEM.
  • Microsoft’s downloadable Process Explorer can show active processes and search for handles or loaded DLLs. It is an optional diagnostic utility, not a certificate that a file is safe.

Can I disable or delete LMS.exe?

Do not delete the executable just because you do not recognize it. Intel discusses disabling LMS in the context of a specific security mitigation; that does not make removal the right routine step for every PC. Removing the Windows service does not necessarily delete LMS.exe, and management software may reinstall or re-enable the service. On an organization-managed computer or one using Intel AMT management features, ask the administrator or OEM before changing it.

For a personally managed PC, first establish whether AMT or local management features are in use and whether the OEM package relies on LMS. If you decide a change is appropriate, prefer a reversible, manufacturer-supported service or driver change over manually deleting the executable. The correct choice depends on the computer’s actual configuration.

Intel’s mitigation material also describes checking for listeners on ports 16992, 16993, 16994, 16995, 623, and 664 for standard LMS variants. Treat this as a diagnostic clue from that guide, not a conclusive malware test or a complete port list for every customized installation.

How do I repair or reinstall LMS.exe?

Get LMS and MEI components through the support site for the exact PC model, not from a standalone executable library. Intel says LMS is packaged with MEI drivers on manufacturer websites, often under chipset or Intel CSME driver categories. AMT functions can also depend on compatible driver, firmware, and BIOS versions, so a generic package may not be suitable for a particular machine. Follow the OEM’s instructions for that model and operating system.

If the computer is managed by an organization, use its support process rather than reinstalling a driver package yourself. If you suspect the current executable is malicious, do not use it as the source for a repair; use security software and the PC manufacturer’s verified support route.

Choose the next step based on your PC

Situation Practical next step
Work- or school-managed PC Ask the IT administrator to verify the service and its management role before changing it.
Personal PC with AMT or local management in use Keep LMS unless the OEM or a knowledgeable administrator confirms a supported change.
Personal PC with no known AMT use Check the service path, signature, OEM package, and model-specific guidance before deciding whether to leave it installed or disable it.
Path, publisher, or package does not match expectations Investigate with reputable security software or the OEM; do not download a replacement EXE from a file library.
