Light pollution is excessive, misdirected or ecologically disruptive artificial light at night (ALAN). Along coasts and at sea, it changes the intensity, timing and spectrum of natural darkness. That can interfere with navigation, movement, feeding, predator–prey interactions, daily biological rhythms and reproduction. Effects depend on the species, habitat, fixture and environmental conditions, so a result from one experiment should not be treated as a rule for every marine organism.

What light pollution means in a marine environment

Marine light pollution is not limited to a bright lamp shining directly onto the water. Coastal development, ports, vessels, offshore facilities and other infrastructure emit light that can travel across beaches and the sea surface. Light also scatters in the atmosphere, producing skyglow that reaches areas far from the original fixture. Reflection from clouds and the water surface can extend that influence still farther.

Scientists generally use artificial light at night (ALAN) for this human-made change to the natural light–dark cycle. The exposure an animal receives depends on the source’s brightness, direction, duration and wavelength, as well as water clarity, depth, cloud cover and the geometry between the source and the animal. A brightly lit harbor, a shielded path light on a nesting beach and distant urban skyglow do not create the same exposure.

Marine organisms evolved with predictable daily darkness, daylight and lunar cycles. They use those cues to orient, migrate, find food, avoid predators, choose habitat and time reproduction. Artificial light can make a night appear brighter, shift when darkness begins or ends, and alter the color spectrum available to sensitive eyes and other light receptors.

How artificial light changes marine life

Navigation and movement

Many marine animals move using the direction and intensity of natural light. A new light source can attract an animal, repel it or make its normal visual compass unreliable. On shorelines, this can redirect animals away from the water. In the open sea, scattered light can change the depth at which organisms travel or feed.

Predator–prey relationships

Night lighting changes who can see whom. Predators may gain a visual advantage in an illuminated patch, while prey may stop foraging, seek shelter or move into a different part of the water column. Reviews of reef ecosystems describe altered predation rates among fishes and invertebrates. These effects can propagate through a food web even when the light does not kill an organism directly.

Daily and lunar rhythms

Zooplankton normally perform a diel vertical migration: they rise toward surface waters at night and descend during the day. Artificial night light can inhibit or delay that movement. Because zooplankton transport nutrients and serve as prey for fish and other animals, a change in their vertical distribution can affect feeding opportunities and nutrient flows beyond the illuminated site.

Reproduction and development

Light is a timing signal for many species. A review of marine ALAN identifies failure of synchronized coral spawning as a documented concern. Studies of reef fishes have also reported reduced reproductive success in some species. In one laboratory study, artificial lighting inhibited hatching of common clownfish eggs. These findings are species- and study-specific; they do not establish that every fish exposed to any night light will fail to reproduce.

Physiological stress

Artificial light can affect physiology as well as behavior. A NOAA-hosted review summarizes experiments in which two coral species showed oxidative stress and other physiological responses under artificial light. In that work, blue and white LED exposure produced stronger effects than the other lighting conditions tested. Juvenile Chilean abalone showed behavioral and metabolic changes in another study. The observations identify plausible mechanisms, not a universal response shared by all corals or invertebrates.

Organism or process Documented observation How to interpret it
Coral spawning Artificial night light can disrupt synchronized spawning. Timing and intensity sensitivity differ among coral species and sites.
Reef fishes Some studies report reduced reproductive success and changed predator–prey patterns. Results come from particular species, habitats and exposure regimes.
Zooplankton Artificial light can inhibit diel vertical migration. Water-column effects may alter feeding and nutrient transport.
Corals in laboratory experiments Two species showed oxidative and physiological responses; blue and white LEDs had stronger effects in that work. The result should not be generalized to every coral or LED installation.
Juvenile Chilean abalone One study observed behavioral and metabolic changes. It is evidence from a named species and experiment, not a prediction for all shellfish.

Sea turtles: the clearest coastal example

Effects on nesting females

Artificial lighting near a nesting beach can deter female sea turtles from coming ashore or cause them to abandon a crawl. A NOAA/NESDIS summary of a Florida satellite-lighting and nesting analysis reported that “there were fewer turtle nests where artificial light is brightest and more where it’s dark.” That is an association in that Florida analysis, not proof that light alone determines nesting density on every beach.

Effects on hatchlings

Newly emerged hatchlings normally use the comparatively bright, open horizon over the sea and the darker land behind them to crawl seaward. Development lighting can reverse that contrast, drawing hatchlings inland or causing them to wander. Exhaustion, dehydration and road or predator exposure can follow when they fail to reach the water promptly. Distant urban skyglow can matter as well as lights visible directly from the beach.

Why amber fixtures are used in some projects

Wildlife-lighting projects have replaced broad-spectrum white lamps with amber LEDs and combined that change with shielding, fixture redesign and careful placement. In a 2015 Gulf Spill Restoration project, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service restoration biologist Ben Frater explained: “Sea turtle eyes are adapted to see underwater, where they spend 99.9 percent of their lives. They don’t have the ability to see amber wavelengths so they simply don’t see the light coming from the LEDs. That’s why these lights don’t attract the sea turtles.” His statement describes the explanation for that project; it is not a guarantee that every amber fixture is harmless to every species.

Florida ordinances described by NOAA/NESDIS use several controls together: wavelength selection, fixture design, positioning and shielding. Color alone cannot compensate for a lamp that is too bright, aimed toward the beach or left on all night.

Artificial light on reefs, shores and offshore waters

Reefs can receive direct illumination from waterfront buildings, docks, boats and underwater equipment, while skyglow produces a broader, lower-level exposure. The combination can shift fish activity, change the visibility of prey and predators, and interfere with the environmental cues that coordinate coral reproduction.

Sandy and rocky shores present different exposure pathways. A fixture mounted behind a seawall may spill across intertidal pools; a lamp on a pier may illuminate shallow water where juvenile fish shelter; a vessel’s deck lights may create a moving patch of exposure. Offshore platforms and ships can introduce light into pelagic waters, where it may affect animals that migrate vertically or horizontally. There is no single “marine light pollution” dose that applies across these settings.

When light is used deliberately for conservation

Artificial light is not inherently harmful in every application. It can be deployed as a targeted gear modification that reduces encounters with wildlife, which is fundamentally different from uncontrolled illumination of a habitat.

In a two-year NOAA Fisheries field trial in Peru, researchers deployed 114 pairs of gillnets. Unilluminated control nets caught 125 green sea turtles, while nets fitted with lights caught 62. The account reported that target catch was unaffected in that trial. The result concerns turtle visibility and net entanglement; it does not show that adding light to a coastal ecosystem is generally beneficial.

A NOAA Fisheries InPort record created October 30, 2024, describes an ongoing North Carolina study testing battery- and solar-powered green LEDs on pound nets. Because that work is listed as ongoing, no outcome should be treated as established.

How to make coastal lighting safer for wildlife

The most reliable approach treats lighting as a site-and-species problem rather than a bulb-color purchase. Use the following sequence when planning a new installation or retrofit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Map the receptor and exposure path. Identify nesting beaches, intertidal habitat, reefs, shallow nursery areas, roosts and open-water routes. Note whether light will be visible from the shore, reflected off the water or scattered into the sky.
  2. Remove unnecessary fixtures. Turn off decorative and security lights that are not needed. Use occupancy controls or timers so essential lights operate only during the hours required.
  3. Set the lowest useful output. Choose no more brightness than the task requires. Excess output increases spill and reflection without improving visibility for the task.
  4. Shield and aim every fixture. Keep light on the walkway, work area or access point. Use full cut-off or similarly shielded designs where appropriate, and prevent direct beams toward the beach, water and horizon.
  5. Choose spectrum with the receptor in mind. Long-wavelength amber or red lighting may reduce attraction in some wildlife-sensitive situations. Sensitivity varies by species, and no single “safe” color has been established for all marine wildlife.
  6. Control mounting height and location. A well-designed lamp in the wrong position can still illuminate the water. Lower, inward-facing fixtures generally make it easier to contain spill than elevated lamps aimed outward.
  7. Check local requirements before installation. Municipal, state and site-specific wildlife rules may specify shielding, operating hours, fixture placement or wavelength. Compliance should be verified for the actual beach, harbor or protected area.
  8. Inspect after dark and adjust. View the installation from the beach and from the water-facing side. Look for visible glow, reflections and bright patches outside the task area, then re-aim, shield or dim the fixture.

Practical priorities for common sites

Site First lighting questions Controls to prioritize
Nesting beach or beachfront property Can a female turtle see the fixture from the approach, and can a hatchling see it from the sand? Switch off nonessential lights, shield and lower fixtures, direct them inland, and follow seasonal wildlife rules.
Harbor, pier or marina Does light spill onto shallow water or intertidal habitat? Confine illumination to working surfaces, reduce output and operating hours, and prevent reflections toward open water.
Reef-adjacent development Will the installation illuminate coral or fish habitat at night? Use the minimum task lighting, shield all outward-facing sources and avoid continuous decorative lighting.
Offshore platform or vessel Could deck or work lights create a persistent pelagic light field? Use task-based controls, aim lights downward and assess unavoidable spill during operating periods.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Marine ALAN is a rapidly developing field. Reviews identify knowledge gaps and practical barriers to implementation, and species differ in sensitivity to intensity, duration and wavelength. Exposure also changes with water clarity, depth, weather and source geometry.

  • Do not assume that all blue light is harmful in every marine setting; stronger effects in one experiment do not establish a universal rule.
  • Do not assume that every amber light is safe. Fixture direction, shielding, brightness and operating time remain important.
  • Do not transfer a turtle-beach result directly to offshore organisms or reef communities.
  • Do not treat a conservation-lighting trial on fishing gear as evidence that general coastal illumination is beneficial.

The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: artificial night light can alter important marine behaviors and biological processes, while the size and direction of the effect depend on the animal, habitat and exposure. Reducing unnecessary light, containing the light that remains and verifying the result at the receptor are the practical steps most consistently supported by current evidence.
