KWGT (Kustom Widget Maker) is an Android app for designing and running custom home-screen widgets. Your launcher remains the home-screen host: it provides the widget picker, grid, placement and resizing controls. Android supplies the widget framework, while KWGT supplies the visual layout, data displays and touch actions. To use it, add a KWGT widget from the launcher’s widget picker, tap the empty widget to open KWGT, load or create a design, and save it.
The exact menus and results depend on your Android release, launcher, device settings and KWGT version. The concepts below remain the same even when a manufacturer changes the wording or gesture used to add a widget.
KWGT in one sentence
KWGT is a widget maker and runtime, not a replacement for your launcher. It lets you assemble a widget from text, shapes, images, layered effects, functions, dynamic data and touch actions, then places that design inside an ordinary Android widget slot on the home screen.

Because these layers are separate, installing KWGT does not change your launcher, app drawer or home-screen navigation. You can remove a KWGT widget while leaving the app installed, or change launchers while keeping your KWGT presets.

How Android launcher widgets work
The launcher is the host
When you long-press an empty area of the home screen and choose Widgets, you are opening the launcher’s widget picker. The launcher asks installed apps which widgets they provide, displays the available sizes and inserts the selected widget into its grid. KWGT appears in that list, but the launcher decides where the object can go and how much space it receives.
Android 8.0 (API level 26) introduced a system pinning request that an app can use to ask a launcher to place a widget. The launcher must support the flow, and the user still confirms the placement. This is why a “pin” or “add to home screen” button can be present on one phone and absent on another: the capability depends on both the Android version and the launcher implementation.
The widget is an app surface, not a miniature app window
A widget is rendered in the launcher’s home-screen environment. It can show information and react to supported taps, but it does not behave like a full app screen with unrestricted controls. KWGT builds the content that Android hands to the launcher; the launcher handles the surrounding grid, touch handoff and layout constraints.

Launchers expose different grid dimensions, minimum and maximum widget sizes, outer padding and resizing rules. Android versions and manufacturer builds can also change the picker labels and permission screens. A preset that is edge-to-edge on one launcher may have visible margins on another, and a one-cell resize can alter text wrapping or the relative position of layers.

What you can design in KWGT
The app listing describes a canvas assembled from common visual and data elements:
- Text: labels, dates, times and other formatted values.
- Shapes and images: backgrounds, icons, photos and decorative objects.
- Layers and effects: groups that can be positioned, transformed and styled together.
- Functions and dynamic data: values that change according to the available data source and the formula or function used.
- Touch actions: taps assigned to an element, such as opening an app or changing a widget state.
These are design capabilities described by the listing, not a promise that every data source or action is available on every Android build. A particular function can also depend on permissions, the source app and background restrictions.
How to add your first KWGT widget
- Install KWGT through the official distribution route available to you. Confirm that the app is installed and that your launcher exposes an Android widget picker.
- Open the launcher’s widget picker. Long-press an empty home-screen area, choose Widgets (or the equivalent menu), find KWGT and select a widget size. Drag it to the desired page or tap the launcher’s add control. The gesture and label vary by launcher.
- Tap the newly placed KWGT area. An empty instance normally opens the KWGT editor. If the launcher shows a confirmation or permission prompt, accept it only if it matches the feature you intend to use.
- Choose a starter design or create one. Use a built-in or available skin as a starting point, or build the layout from a blank canvas with text, shapes, images, layers and data.
- Save the widget. Use KWGT’s save control, then return to the home screen to check the real result at the size supplied by the launcher.
If tapping the widget opens the wrong app or nothing happens, first verify that you placed a KWGT widget rather than an icon or shortcut. Then check that the widget is not covered by another home-screen object and that the launcher has not disabled widget interaction.

Presets: what a .kwgt file is and how to import it
A preset is a design file, not a launcher and not a complete home-screen replacement. It contains the KWGT layout and settings that can be loaded into a KWGT widget instance.

Load Preset inside KWGT
Place a KWGT widget on the home screen first. Open it, choose Load Preset, and select the preset from the available locations. Kustom’s FAQ documents the .kwgt and .kwgt.zip formats. The file extension does not remove the need for a widget instance: the editor is opened through the KWGT widget you placed.
Manual import from the Kustom folder
Kustom also documents copying preset files into the Kustom/widgets folder for manual import. After copying, reopen KWGT’s preset loader and select the file. Android file-access rules and manufacturer file managers can change where that folder is visible, so use the folder and picker that your current Android build exposes rather than assuming an old storage path.
Why an imported preset can look wrong
- The preset was designed for a different widget aspect ratio or grid size.
- The launcher adds outer padding, leaving a margin around an edge-to-edge design.
- A referenced image, font, icon or data source is missing or inaccessible.
- The preset uses a function or touch action that needs a permission or an app not present on the phone.
Save a copy of your working preset before changing dimensions or replacing resources. That gives you a known-good version to reload if an experiment breaks the layout.

Sizing, padding and edge-to-edge layouts
KWGT receives sizing information from the launcher, and that information is not interpreted identically everywhere. Kustom specifically warns that Auto sizing can follow launcher-provided instructions that produce incorrect or unexpected resizing. If a design repeatedly changes proportions when you resize it, inspect the KWGT sizing settings and test a fixed or manually chosen mode where available.

Standard launcher padding is another common cause of a widget that does not fill the screen width. The launcher may reserve an inset around every widget even when the KWGT design itself has no margin. You cannot always remove that inset from inside KWGT; the launcher’s grid and padding policy may be the limiting factor.
Use this adjustment order:
- Resize the widget with the launcher’s handles and note whether the content or the outer box changes.
- Open KWGT’s sizing settings and review whether Auto is being used.
- Check the launcher’s widget padding, grid density and edge-to-edge options.
- Recheck text wrapping and image scaling after each change; fixing the outer width can reveal a separate alignment problem inside the preset.
Why a KWGT widget may not update immediately
KWGT widgets are not guaranteed to refresh every second. Kustom explains the reason plainly: “Android Widgets do not know if they are currently displayed or not.” Updating continuously would consume processor and battery resources while the user might not be looking at the home screen, especially when a preset is complex. Kustom therefore disables that behavior.
A delayed value can have several causes, and there is no single universal fix. Diagnose the symptom rather than enabling every possible background permission:
- Only one data field is stale: check the source app, account connection or permission that supplies that field.
- The whole widget pauses after leaving the home screen: the normal Android widget refresh model and launcher visibility behavior may be involved.
- Updates stop after the phone sleeps: inspect the device’s battery optimization or background restriction for KWGT and the relevant data-source app, if the symptom points there.
- The widget updates after opening KWGT but not on its own: review the preset’s refresh or data settings and confirm that the launcher has not restricted the widget.
Do not promise a one-second clock, weather or feed refresh simply because a design displays changing data. The refresh interval is constrained by Android, the launcher, KWGT’s resource-saving behavior and the source of the data.

Free and Pro capabilities
The indexed app listing says that the Pro version removes ads and enables importing presets from SD storage and external skins. That description does not establish a current price, the exact entitlement in every country or every purchase path. Check the listing shown in your region at the time you install or upgrade.
If you only want to experiment with a built-in design, the free capability may be enough. If your workflow depends on importing files from outside the app or using external skin packs, verify that the current Pro entitlement includes the specific import method you plan to use.
Version and compatibility checks
Kustom’s downloads page listed stable KWGT version 3.82, build 3.82b621115, uploaded July 30, 2026 when that page was recorded. Release details are time-sensitive; check the current official download page before following a version-specific troubleshooting step.

Before installing a preset or changing launchers, confirm:
- Your Android version and launcher expose widgets.
- The launcher has enough grid space for the widget size you selected.
- KWGT and any data-source apps have the permissions they actually need.
- Battery restrictions are not stopping an update that your design requires.
- The preset’s resources and file format are supported by your installed KWGT version.
Choosing a launcher for KWGT
There is no universal “best” launcher for KWGT. Evaluate the launcher you already use, or any candidate, against the behaviors that affect your design:

Test one representative preset before redesigning your entire home screen. A launcher that looks ideal in screenshots may impose a grid, padding or resize rule that conflicts with your actual layout.
Troubleshooting checklist
The KWGT option is missing from the widget picker
- Confirm KWGT finished installing and appears in the app list.
- Restart the launcher or the phone if the picker has not refreshed its installed-widget list.
- Check whether the current launcher supports Android widgets at all.
- Try placing the widget on another home-screen page with available grid space.
The widget is blank or the preset will not load
- Open the widget by tapping its placed area, not the app icon alone.
- Use Load Preset and select a supported
.kwgtor.kwgt.zipfile. - For manual import, verify that the file is in
Kustom/widgetsand visible to the file picker. - Check for missing images, fonts, source apps or permissions referenced by the design.
The widget is cropped, stretched or surrounded by a margin
- Resize it with the launcher first.
- Review KWGT’s Auto sizing setting.
- Check launcher padding and grid density.
- Adjust internal layer positions only after the outer widget size is stable.
Data is stale
- Identify whether one field or the entire widget is affected.
- Verify the underlying data source and its permissions.
- Review battery and background restrictions only when they match the symptom.
- Allow for Android’s non-continuous widget refresh model; a widget is not a continuously running app window.
Bottom line
KWGT supplies the design and behavior; Android supplies the widget framework; and your launcher supplies the home-screen space and placement rules. The dependable workflow is to place a KWGT widget, open it, load or build a preset, save it, then tune sizing and launcher padding. Presets remain portable design files, but their appearance and refresh timing can change with the launcher, Android version, device restrictions and KWGT release. Treat those variables as part of the setup rather than as defects in every imported design.
