ISO/IEC 27017 is a cloud-security standard, but the phrase “ISO 27017 certification” can be misleading. The current edition, ISO/IEC 27017:2026, provides cloud-specific guidance and controls for cloud service providers and customers. ISO describes certification as an option for ISO/IEC 27001, not as an automatic or universally recognized standalone certificate for ISO/IEC 27017. Before relying on a provider’s claim, check the certificate’s exact standard, edition, scope and issuer.
What is ISO/IEC 27017?
ISO/IEC 27017 provides cloud-specific information security guidance and controls based on ISO/IEC 27002. It addresses the provision and use of cloud services, where customers and providers may divide responsibility for information, infrastructure and operations. Its controls help those parties identify responsibilities and apply safeguards consistently; they are not a universal checklist to adopt without considering context.
The standard applies to public, private and hybrid cloud deployments. ISO says organizations should select controls in light of risk assessment and relevant legal, regulatory, contractual and cloud-specific requirements. In a private cloud, internal departments may have customer-provider relationships analogous to those between separate organizations, so the controls may need to be adapted to the roles and capabilities involved. ISO’s ISO/IEC 27017:2026 description sets out the standard’s scope and focus.

Is ISO 27017 certification mandatory?
No general requirement to obtain an “ISO 27017 certificate” is established by the cited ISO material. ISO presents 27017 as guidance and controls. Its certification guidance concerns ISO/IEC 27001: an organization can implement that information security management system (ISMS) standard without seeking third-party certification, or choose certification to provide assurance to customers and stakeholders.

ISO does not itself award certificates. ISO explains that an accredited conformity assessment body can add confidence because an accreditation body independently assesses the certification body’s competence. The available sources do not establish a universally recognized, standalone accredited ISO/IEC 27017 certification route. Treat a vendor’s “27017 certified” wording as a claim to verify, not as proof of a particular kind of independent certification.
How ISO/IEC 27017 differs from ISO/IEC 27002 and ISO/IEC 27001
| Standard | What it addresses | What to understand about certification |
|---|---|---|
| ISO/IEC 27002 | Information security controls that form the basis for ISO/IEC 27017. | ISO/IEC 27017 builds on it with cloud-specific guidance and controls. Do not infer a certification claim from alignment with its guidance. |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | Requirements for an information security management system (ISMS). | Organizations may implement it without certification or choose third-party certification. ISO describes accredited certification as an additional confidence layer. |
| ISO/IEC 27017 | Cloud-specific guidance and controls for cloud service providers and customers. | Distinguish implementation or alignment from a certificate to ISO/IEC 27001, and ask what assessment or scheme a 27017 certificate claim relies on. |
For scale, ISO’s Survey 2022 reported over 70,000 ISO/IEC 27001 certificates in 150 countries and all economic sectors. That figure is for ISO/IEC 27001, not ISO/IEC 27017. ISO’s ISO/IEC 27001 page explains the standard and certification context.

Which edition is current?
ISO/IEC 27017:2026, Edition 2, is the current edition. It was published on 2026-07-27. The previous ISO/IEC 27017:2015 edition was withdrawn on the same date, so a 2015 copy is not the current edition. The IEC publication record for ISO/IEC 27017:2026 lists 39 pages and paper and PDF/ePub formats. The IEC record for the 2015 edition documents its withdrawal.
To find the current document, search for “ISO/IEC 27017:2026 standard” and confirm the edition in the catalog listing before purchase. ISO’s catalog displayed CHF 196 when checked; prices can change, so verify the live catalog. IEC’s record confirms formats, but it does not establish Amazon availability.
How to evaluate a provider’s ISO 27017 claim
Ask for the certificate or assessment evidence itself, then verify what it actually covers rather than relying on a badge or marketing phrase.
- Identify the named standard and edition. Check whether the document names ISO/IEC 27017, ISO/IEC 27001 or another assessment, and whether it refers to the current 2026 edition.
- Read the scope. Confirm which services, locations and organizational boundaries are included. A certificate covering one service or site does not establish coverage for every offering or operation.
- Check the issuer and accreditation. Identify the certification body and ask whether the certificate is accredited for the relevant activity and by which accreditation body. Verify any claimed standalone 27017 scheme with the relevant accreditation body and scheme owner.
- Look at the cloud responsibilities and controls addressed. Establish whether the evidence speaks to the provider’s responsibilities, customer responsibilities or both, and how it relates to the services you plan to use.
- Check dates and validity. Confirm the evidence’s issue date, validity status and applicable edition. Make sure it is current for the services and scope under consideration.
What the standard means for cloud customers and providers
For cloud customers
Use the guidance to clarify which party is responsible for each relevant safeguard and to assess whether the provider’s evidence covers the specific service you intend to use. A provider’s claim alone does not answer how responsibilities are divided for your deployment; review scope and applicable contractual requirements.
For cloud providers
Use the controls to shape cloud-specific security practices and explain responsibilities to customers. Select controls according to risk and applicable requirements rather than treating the standard as a one-size-fits-all certification checklist. If you publish a certification claim, describe the exact standard, edition, assessment basis and scope supported by the evidence.
