Interdisciplinary learning is planned learning in which two or more academic disciplines deliberately combine their knowledge, concepts, methods or forms of communication to answer a meaningful question, explain a phenomenon, solve a problem, create an outcome or raise a new question. Students do more than study several subjects around the same theme. They learn what each discipline contributes, connect those contributions and use the combined understanding for a shared purpose.

Education Scotland describes it as a planned curriculum experience that disciplines plan and execute together. The International Baccalaureate (IB) describes integration that creates new understanding. The exact labels vary across education systems, so the quality of the connection matters more than the name attached to a unit.

What makes learning interdisciplinary?

Three features distinguish interdisciplinary learning from simply placing subjects next to one another.

A shared intellectual purpose

The starting point is a worthwhile concept, question, phenomenon, problem or product that benefits from more than one way of knowing. A unit might ask why a local stream is polluted, how a community should reduce flood risk, or how evidence should be communicated to the public. The purpose gives the subjects a reason to work together.

Distinct disciplinary contributions

Each discipline retains meaningful content and methods. Science may contribute observation and experimental design; mathematics may contribute measurement, modelling and statistical comparison; geography may contribute spatial analysis and land-use concepts; language arts may contribute argument, audience awareness and clear explanation. Interdisciplinary work depends on knowing what each field contributes, not on treating all subjects as interchangeable.

Deliberate integration

Learners must connect the contributions and use them together. If students complete an unrelated science worksheet, mathematics exercise and writing assignment under the same topic heading, they have experienced a theme across subjects, but not necessarily interdisciplinary learning. Integration is visible when a student uses one discipline’s evidence, representation or method to inform work in another.

How interdisciplinary learning works in practice

The following sequence is a practical planning model, not a universal prescription. Education Scotland emphasises joint planning and execution, connection, inquiry, reflection, conceptual understanding and application in real contexts. IB examples include explaining a phenomenon, solving a problem, creating a product and generating a new question.

1. Choose a question, phenomenon or problem

Begin with a purpose that genuinely needs multiple perspectives. A question is stronger when no single subject can answer it adequately and when students can produce or defend something concrete. Avoid choosing a broad theme such as “water” or “the future” without identifying the intellectual work students must do.

2. Map what each discipline will teach

Teachers should specify the knowledge, concepts, skills and methods students will learn in every participating subject. Identify the essential disciplinary learning first, then the connections among it. This protects subject depth and prevents one discipline from becoming decorative.

3. Co-design one coherent experience

Educators agree on a sequence, shared vocabulary, resources, roles and a final outcome. They decide where students will encounter each discipline, when they will make connections and what evidence will demonstrate learning. Joint planning may involve teachers from different departments, a team working across grade levels or one teacher deliberately combining fields.

4. Make students do the connecting

During inquiry, problem solving, design, discussion or creation, ask learners to explain how one perspective changes or strengthens another. Prompts such as “Which data support this claim?”, “What assumption does this model make?” and “How would the conclusion change if the location changed?” make the integration explicit. Students should handle evidence, representations and methods rather than receiving a preassembled synthesis.

5. Assess both subjects and synthesis

Assessment should capture the important knowledge and methods of each discipline as well as the quality of the connection. A polished product alone cannot show whether students understand the underlying concepts. Use discipline-specific criteria, an integration criterion and, where appropriate, a reflection in which students justify how they combined perspectives.

6. Review and adapt

After the unit, examine student work, misconceptions, participation and the feasibility of the timetable. Adjust the question, sequence, scaffolding and assessment for the local curriculum, learner needs and available expertise. Integrated STEM guidance from the Australian Government specifically recommends evaluating initiatives because implementation can be difficult and more evidence is needed about outcomes.

Illustrative example: investigating local water quality

The following is an illustration of how integration can work, not a reported case study. A class could investigate the question, “How healthy is our local waterway, and what should the community know?”

Discipline Contribution students learn Connection to the shared task
Science Sampling procedures, indicators of water quality and interpretation of observations Provides defensible evidence about the waterway
Mathematics Measurement, comparison, averages and representation of results Shows patterns and differences among sampling sites
Geography Place, land use and relationships between human activity and environments Helps explain why conditions vary by location
Language arts Evidence-based explanation, audience, structure and persuasive communication Turns findings into a clear public-facing report or presentation

The unit is interdisciplinary when students use the measurements and mathematical comparisons to support a geographic explanation, then use that combined evidence in their communication. Scheduling four unrelated activities about water would not establish the same integration.

Interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and related terms

Education systems do not use one universally accepted terminology or taxonomy. An archived U.S. Department of State curriculum resource explicitly notes this lack of standard terminology. The distinctions below are useful working descriptions, not rigid international definitions.

Term Typical relationship among disciplines What to look for in student work
Multidisciplinary Several subjects address a common theme or topic, often in parallel Separate subject products with limited dependence on one another
Interdisciplinary Two or more disciplines deliberately integrate knowledge, concepts or methods Students connect perspectives to explain, solve, create or question
Transdisciplinary Work crosses disciplinary boundaries around complex questions, often including contexts beyond school Disciplinary tools are mobilised flexibly for a broader real-world purpose
Integrated or thematic Curriculum elements are organised around a common idea; the degree of integration varies Evidence of integration must be checked rather than assumed from the theme
Project-based A learning approach organised around sustained inquiry and a substantial product or outcome It may be disciplinary, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary depending on the design

The label “project-based” describes an approach to organising learning, while “interdisciplinary” describes how disciplinary knowledge is connected. A project can use one discipline only; an interdisciplinary unit can include short investigations rather than a long project.

What learners may gain—and what the evidence does not prove

Potential benefits should be stated carefully. The Australian Government’s integrated STEM guidance lists cross-disciplinary thinking, interest in STEM ideas and processes, STEM knowledge and engagement as possible benefits. It also warns that integrated STEM can be challenging without suitable capability. Those statements concern integrated STEM and do not establish that every interdisciplinary unit, age group or subject combination produces the same effects.

A 2024 systematic review of higher-education outcomes reported three broad themes: academic and disciplinary engagement, metacognitive skills and perspective-taking skills. Under a strict operationalisation, the review included 38 studies; under a more lenient operationalisation, it included 60. These are counts of studies included under different definitions, not estimates of learning impact. The review describes the evidence base as still in its infancy and calls for clearer definitions and comparisons with cross-disciplinary and transdisciplinary learning.

An IB study published in 2021 used a literature review and a curriculum-document audit across its four programmes. Its summary found interdisciplinary learning embedded to a high degree while identifying room for greater clarity and consistency. That is a finding about IB curriculum documents and practice, not a causal evaluation showing that the approach produces a particular gain.

How to design a strong interdisciplinary unit

Protect disciplinary depth

Write a short “discipline contribution” statement for every subject. Name the concepts and methods students must understand, not just the activity they will perform. If a contribution cannot be described precisely, the subject may have been included for appearance rather than necessity.

Define the integration students must demonstrate

Use verbs such as compare, model, interpret, justify, design, explain and transfer. For example, students might interpret scientific measurements through a mathematical model, then justify a recommendation using geographic evidence. The verb should describe a relationship among contributions, not a list of tasks.

Plan the sequence around dependencies

Decide which knowledge is prerequisite and when students can productively combine it. Students may need to learn a measurement method before analysing data, or understand a concept before evaluating a claim. Make those dependencies visible in the timetable and provide bridging activities when disciplines use different terminology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build in inquiry and reflection

Give students opportunities to test assumptions, revise explanations and discuss how disciplinary perspectives differ. Reflection can ask which evidence was most useful, where a method was limited and how the final conclusion changed after another discipline was introduced. This makes metacognitive and perspective-taking work observable rather than assumed.

Design for the actual setting

Shared planning time, timetable flexibility, leadership support and teacher knowledge affect what can be delivered. A design that requires simultaneous teaching by four specialists may be unrealistic in a small school; a co-planned sequence led by one teacher with consultation may be more workable. Adapt the scope without removing the essential disciplinary learning.

Assessing interdisciplinary learning

A balanced assessment plan normally includes several kinds of evidence.

  • Disciplinary understanding: Can the learner use the important concepts, procedures and vocabulary of each subject accurately?
  • Connection: Does the learner explain how evidence, methods or ideas from one discipline inform another?
  • Application or transfer: Can the learner use the integrated understanding in the shared problem, product or a new situation?
  • Reasoning: Can the learner justify choices, recognise limitations and respond to conflicting evidence?
  • Reflection: Can the learner describe how the perspectives were combined and how the explanation or design changed?

Use separate subject criteria where necessary, then add a clearly defined synthesis criterion. Do not award a high integration score merely because a final product looks professional; require visible reasoning, evidence and connections.

Common failure modes and practical fixes

The theme replaces the learning

Symptom: Every subject mentions the same topic, but students do not use one subject’s work in another. Fix: Rewrite the outcome so it requires combined evidence or methods, and remove activities that do not serve it.

One discipline dominates

Symptom: Other subjects provide vocabulary, decoration or a short presentation while one subject supplies all the intellectual work. Fix: Give each discipline a non-negotiable concept or method and assess it explicitly.

The product hides weak understanding

Symptom: A visually impressive poster or prototype receives a high mark despite inaccurate reasoning. Fix: Collect process notes, data analysis, drafts or oral explanations alongside the product.

Planning depends on goodwill alone

Symptom: Teachers improvise links during delivery, causing gaps, duplicated content or impossible timing. Fix: Schedule shared planning, agree on responsibilities and identify the minimum viable version before teaching begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The design is too ambitious

Symptom: Students encounter many subjects but master none of the required concepts. Fix: Reduce the number of disciplines or narrow the question while preserving a genuine connection among the remaining contributions.

Evaluating implementation, not just intentions

Evaluation should ask what students actually did and learned: which disciplinary concepts appeared in their work, where connections were made, what misconceptions persisted and whether the timetable and staffing were workable. Collect student artifacts, teacher observations and learner reflections, then compare them with the intended outcomes. Review the design after each cycle rather than assuming that a promising plan worked as written.

A New South Wales Department of Education resource quotes Putting Evidence to Work: A School’s Guide to Implementation, page 3: “It doesn’t matter how great an educational idea or intervention is in principle; what really matters is how it manifests in the day-to-day work of people in schools.” For interdisciplinary learning, that means examining the ordinary planning meetings, lessons, feedback and assessment that turn an idea into student experience.

Interdisciplinary learning works when integration is intentional, disciplinary knowledge remains substantial, learners make the connections themselves and assessment reveals both subject mastery and synthesis. Its promise is meaningful, but outcomes depend on design quality, educator capability and sustained evaluation rather than on the label alone.
