INS Mangrol (P82) is the Indian Navy’s third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC). Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi, it is intended for underwater surveillance and other missions in coastal waters. The ship also revives the name of an earlier Indian naval vessel, INS Mangrol (M85), a Mahé-class minesweeper that served until 2004.

Anti-Submarine Warfare
Anti-Submarine Warfare, or ASW, covers the detection, tracking and countering of submarines. A ship performing ASW typically combines underwater sensors with command systems and weapons. For Mangrol, the Ministry of Defence identifies torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets and sonars among the relevant equipment.

Shallow-water craft
“Shallow water” refers to the littoral zone: coastal areas where depth, seabed shape, shipping traffic and background noise can make underwater detection difficult. A craft intended for this environment is sized and equipped for work near shore, in approaches to harbours and around other restricted waters. Mangrol’s role is therefore complementary to that of larger surface combatants and submarines rather than a replacement for them.
The third vessel of the class
Mangrol is the third ASW-SWC of the Mahe class. Its hull pennant, P82, identifies the individual ship; the class name identifies the common design and mission family.
INS Mangrol’s missions
Underwater surveillance
The ship is equipped for underwater surveillance, which means maintaining awareness of activity below the surface. Sonar is central to that task: it uses sound to detect or characterize contacts in the water. In coastal waters, operators must distinguish possible submarines from commercial traffic, seabed features, marine life and other sources of noise. The official description establishes the surveillance role but does not publish a detailed contact-detection range or a specific sonar model.
Anti-submarine warfare in coastal waters
Mangrol’s ASW mission focuses on coastal waters rather than open-ocean patrols. In a response sequence, sensors can indicate a possible underwater contact, the crew can assess and track it, and the ship can employ an appropriate weapon if ordered. The vessel carries torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets for that counter-threat role. Public releases do not specify the weapons’ model, range or number carried, so those details should not be inferred from the ship’s class alone.

Low-Intensity Maritime Operations
The Navy also assigns Mangrol to Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO). LIMO is a category for maritime activity below the level of a conventional major war. It can involve persistent security and response duties in coastal spaces, but the commissioning and delivery announcements do not provide a task-by-task list for this ship. The important point is that Mangrol is not limited to submarine hunting; it is intended to support a broader coastal-security workload.
Mine warfare
Mine warfare is another stated capability. Mines can deny access to a channel or harbour, and mine-warfare work may involve detecting, classifying or dealing with such hazards. The public description confirms that Mangrol has mine-warfare capabilities, but it does not call the new P82 a dedicated minesweeper or identify a mine-clearance system. That distinction matters because the earlier vessel carrying the Mangrol name was specifically a minesweeper.
Protection of ports and harbours
These missions converge around the protection of ports, harbours and their approaches. A shallow-water ASW craft can patrol close to infrastructure, investigate underwater contacts and contribute to keeping access routes usable. The ship’s design emphasis is therefore local awareness and rapid response in waters where a larger vessel may be less convenient to operate.
Equipment and how it supports the role
Water-jet propulsion
Mangrol uses water-jet propulsion. A water jet draws in water and expels it at high velocity to produce thrust. This arrangement is commonly associated with craft that need responsive handling in confined or shallow areas, although the Navy has not released a public top-speed figure for P82. It would be inaccurate to turn the propulsion type into an assumed speed or acceleration claim.

Torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets
Torpedoes are underwater weapons designed to home on or otherwise attack a submerged target. Anti-submarine rockets deliver an explosive charge toward a suspected underwater contact. Their presence shows that Mangrol is equipped to move from detection to engagement, but the available announcements do not state the launcher arrangement, salvo size or engagement envelope.
Sonars and radars
Sonars provide the underwater picture required for ASW and surveillance. Radars support the surface and air picture, helping the crew monitor nearby traffic and contacts. Together, these sensors feed the ship’s command decisions. No public release provides the radar or sonar manufacturer, frequency band, instrument fit or processing architecture.
Published specifications
The following dimensions come from an Indian Express explainer published in 2026. They are approximate secondary specifications, not a complete official Navy data sheet.
| Specification | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Length | About 78 metres | Approximate figure reported by The Indian Express. |
| Beam | About 11.36 metres | Approximate figure reported by The Indian Express. |
| Displacement | Approximately 896–1,100 tonnes | A range reported by The Indian Express; the spread may reflect different loading or reporting conventions. |
| Propulsion | Water jets | Stated in the official delivery description; speed is not stated. |
| Indigenous content | More than 80 percent | Ministry of Defence figure for the ship, 2026. |
The displacement range should not be presented as a single precise mass. Warship displacement can vary with fuel, stores, ammunition, crew and other loading conditions, and the published range itself is the evidence available for Mangrol.

Why the shallow-water role matters
Coastal approaches are operationally demanding. Water is often shallower, seabed contours change more quickly and civilian traffic is denser than in open sea. Those conditions can complicate sonar interpretation and leave less room for manoeuvre. A craft built for this setting can remain near the area that needs protection and combine surveillance with a weapon response.
This is also why Mangrol should not be judged by the standards used for a frigate or destroyer. The relevant question is whether it can contribute to a layered coastal defence system: fixed sensors, patrol craft, larger surface ships, aircraft and shore command networks can each cover different parts of the problem. Public information about P82 confirms its assigned functions, but does not publish a complete force-structure plan or deployment schedule.

The Gujarati place name
Mangrol is a coastal town and minor port in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. It is known as a prominent fishing harbour. Naming a naval vessel for the town connects the ship to India’s maritime geography and to a community whose economy is closely tied to the sea.

The two ships are not the same hull and do not have the same principal mission. The earlier M85 was associated with minesweeping; the current P82 is an ASW shallow-water craft that also has mine-warfare capability. The shared name is a lineage and commemorative choice, not evidence that equipment or service history transferred from one vessel to the other.

Indigenous construction and what “over 80 percent” means
The Ministry of Defence says Mangrol has more than 80 percent indigenous content and describes the figure as evidence of growing Indian capability in warship design, construction and systems integration. In practical terms, indigenous content indicates that most of the ship’s value, equipment or production effort—as defined by the government’s accounting method—comes from Indian sources. It does not mean every component was designed and manufactured domestically, and the public statement does not provide a component-by-component breakdown.
CSL’s role is significant because the ship was constructed in India and delivered from the Kochi yard. Delivery and commissioning dates show the progression from shipyard completion to naval service, while the indigenous-content figure describes the industrial base behind the vessel. Neither figure by itself reveals how the ship will be deployed or how many craft will be assigned to a particular harbour.
