Indirect prompt injection is an attack in which instructions planted in a web page, document, email, image, or other retrieved resource influence an AI system. The user does not type the malicious instruction; the AI search or retrieval system encounters it while gathering information and may mistake it for an authorized command.
The danger is a trust-boundary problem. Once untrusted material enters a model’s context, its effect depends on the system’s permissions. An answer-only search assistant might produce a biased result, while an agent connected to private files, business systems, links, or outbound messaging could disclose data or take an unintended action.
Indirect prompt injection, defined
NIST defines indirect prompt injection as “A type of prompt injection executed through resource control rather than through user-provided input as in a direct prompt injection.” The attacker controls, edits, or publishes a resource that the AI is expected to read. The resource then carries both ordinary content and an instruction aimed at the model.
Recommended Free Tools
In a direct injection, the attacker places the instruction in the chat request itself, such as asking an assistant to ignore its rules. In an indirect injection, the user’s question can be completely harmless. The malicious text arrives later through search results, a browser page, a connected mailbox, a shared drive, a PDF, or a database record.

| Attack type | Where the instruction enters | Typical example | Primary security question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct prompt injection | User-controlled prompt | A user asks the model to disregard its system instructions. | Can the application separate user requests from higher-priority policy? |
| Indirect prompt injection | Attacker-controlled resource retrieved or processed by the system | A web page tells a browsing agent to send extracted information to an external server. | Can the application treat retrieved material as untrusted data rather than authority? |
OpenAI describes prompt injection as a form of social engineering specific to conversational AI. The model is persuaded by language in its context, even though that language was not intended to be an instruction from an authorized operator.
How an attack reaches an AI search system
AI search combines retrieval with generation. A search engine, browser, or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline finds material, places selected passages in the model’s context, and asks the model to answer. That ingestion path creates several opportunities for hostile content.
- Influence a source. An attacker publishes a page, edits a document, compromises a site, submits a poisoned record, or controls a feed that is synchronized into an index.
- Get the source discovered. Search ranking, a user’s query, a connector, or an automatic crawler causes the resource to be fetched. The attacker may use text that looks like ordinary content, hidden page elements, metadata, or instructions addressed directly to the assistant.
- Pass the content through retrieval. The page or document is chunked, embedded, indexed, and selected as relevant. Poisoned text can therefore survive even when a user never opens the original source.
- Place it beside trusted instructions. The model receives system policy, the user’s question, retrieved passages, and sometimes tool results in one context window. If boundaries are unclear, the malicious passage can look like an operational instruction.
- Influence the response or a tool call. The model may repeat a false claim, favor a particular recommendation, reveal information available in context, follow a link, or invoke a connected tool.
OWASP treats this as a pipeline problem rather than a single bad prompt. The attack surface includes ingestion, content validation, embeddings and storage, retrieval, response generation, output validation, and integration with downstream agents. External connectors and automatically synchronized repositories deserve the same scrutiny as public web pages.

Retrieved text is not automatically trustworthy
Relevance is not authorization. A passage can be highly relevant to a question and still contain instructions that the model must not follow. Search systems often optimize for useful context, not for proving that every sentence came from a trusted publisher.
Context can blur instruction and evidence
Traditional software can keep data and commands in separate channels. Large language models process both as natural language tokens. Delimiters, labels, and system prompts help, but they do not create a perfect security boundary. An attacker can phrase an instruction as a warning, policy note, or data field and attempt to make it appear authoritative.

Capabilities determine impact
OpenAI’s source-and-sink model is useful here. A source is the attacker’s way to influence the model, such as a poisoned page. A sink is a capability that becomes dangerous when used in the wrong context, such as transmitting information, following a link, or calling a tool. An answer-only system may be manipulated without exposing private data; an agent with broad permissions can turn the same text into a security incident.
Documented examples
Historical web-page manipulation
Microsoft described an earlier Bing Chat incident in which hidden instructions on a malicious web page were treated as commands. The system generated an image request to an attacker-controlled server and unintentionally transmitted conversation data through URL parameters. Microsoft says that specific issue was fixed. It is evidence of a failure mode, not proof that every current AI search product behaves identically.

Malicious instructions in a Word document
Microsoft also documented hidden prompts in a Word file that manipulated an assistant summarizing the document into exposing private information. The lesson is broader than web search: any file that an assistant can read can become an instruction-delivery mechanism if the application does not isolate untrusted content.
Biased recommendations
OpenAI uses a simpler example: a malicious apartment listing includes an instruction that causes an assistant to recommend that listing regardless of the user’s preferences. No dramatic data theft is required for prompt injection to matter; quietly distorting an answer can mislead a customer or decision-maker.
A narrow test result is not a general success rate
An OpenAI agent-design article reports one 2025 example working 50% of the time under a specific prompt and test setup. That figure is not a prevalence estimate or a universal probability of success. It illustrates why results depend on the model, prompt, retrieved content, tools, and defenses in the particular system being tested.

What can happen after a successful injection?
- Answer manipulation: The assistant omits relevant evidence, repeats a false claim, or presents an attacker-selected conclusion.
- Recommendation bias: Search rankings or summaries are steered toward a product, person, location, or source.
- Confidentiality loss: The model reveals private text that was available through its context or connectors.
- Unauthorized communication: A tool sends email, posts content, makes a network request, or places data in a URL.
- Unwanted transactions or changes: An agent edits records, submits a form, purchases an item, or changes a setting without meaningful approval.
- Cross-tenant exposure: Weak permission checks allow content retrieved for one user or workspace to influence another user’s answer.
Severity is shaped by four factors: what sources can be controlled, what sensitive data the model can read, which tools and external channels are enabled, and whether consequential operations require confirmation. A poisoned public article is concerning; a poisoned article read by an agent that can access customer records and send messages is materially more dangerous.
How to evaluate an AI search architecture
Use the following questions when assessing a product or an internally built RAG system. They are practical comparison axes, not a universal scoring standard.
| Area | Questions to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Source exposure | Which websites, drives, mailboxes, feeds, and connectors can enter context? | Connector inventory, ingestion policies, and content-type restrictions. |
| Provenance | Can each passage be traced to a document, version, owner, and retrieval event? | Document identifiers, timestamps, source labels, and retrieval logs. |
| Permissions | Are user and tenant permissions enforced at retrieval time? | Permission-aware index design and document-level access tests. |
| Data reach | What private information can the model access, and is it minimized? | Data-flow diagrams, connector scopes, and least-privilege reviews. |
| Tool reach | Can the model browse, send, purchase, edit, or call external services? | Tool allowlists, parameter restrictions, and authentication boundaries. |
| Human control | Which operations require explicit user confirmation? | Approval screens, transaction previews, and denial handling. |
| Testing and monitoring | Are ingestion, retrieval, generation, and output stages tested for hostile content? | Adversarial test cases, alerts, audit logs, and incident procedures. |
Layered defenses for system builders
1. Label and isolate untrusted content
Mark retrieved pages, documents, and tool outputs as untrusted data. Keep them in a clearly delimited section separate from system and developer instructions. Tell the model that text inside a retrieved source is evidence to analyze, not authority to obey. Do not rely on a label alone; enforce the distinction in the application and tool orchestration layer.
2. Validate before indexing
Inspect connectors and incoming files before they reach the index. Check content type, origin, integrity, ownership, and unexpected embedded instructions. Treat automatically synchronized sources as untrusted until their access and update process is understood. Quarantine suspicious material rather than silently indexing it.
3. Preserve provenance and permissions
Store source identifiers, versions, owners, timestamps, and access metadata with every chunk. Apply permission-aware retrieval and document-level access checks at query time, not only when a file is first ingested. Metadata filters should prevent a model from receiving content the requesting user is not entitled to see.

4. Minimize data and connector privileges
Give the agent only the repositories and fields needed for its task. Separate read-only search from write-capable workflows. Use different credentials for retrieval and action tools where possible, and avoid broad shared service accounts that turn one prompt-injection flaw into access to an entire environment.
5. Constrain tools and outbound actions
Use allowlists for domains, APIs, commands, and recipients. Validate tool arguments independently of the model’s natural-language reasoning. Require a human confirmation step before sending messages, exposing sensitive information, completing purchases, changing records, or performing other consequential operations. Show the user what will happen, which data will be sent, and where it will go.
6. Add detection, but do not make it the only barrier
Prompt-injection classifiers, content sanitizers, and suspicious-pattern rules can reduce exposure, but attackers can vary wording and hide instructions in formats a detector misses. Combine probabilistic detection with deterministic authorization checks, isolation, tool restrictions, and runtime monitoring.
7. Test the complete pipeline
Build an adversarial harness that inserts hostile instructions into web pages, PDFs, office files, metadata, and connector records. Test whether those instructions can override system rules, cross tenant boundaries, trigger tools, or leak secrets. Include regression tests for every incident and monitor production logs for unusual retrieval-to-action chains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A practical response plan
- Map the trust boundaries. List every external source, index, model context, connector, tool, and outbound channel.
- Classify the consequences. Separate harmless answer changes from disclosure, communication, financial, or record-changing actions.
- Reduce permissions. Remove unused repositories and tools; make remaining access read-only where feasible.
- Implement approval gates. Require confirmation for actions with legal, financial, privacy, or reputational consequences.
- Instrument the pipeline. Log source provenance, retrieved passages, model decisions, tool calls, approvals, and denials without storing unnecessary sensitive content.
- Run hostile-content tests. Verify that malicious instructions remain data, cannot override policy, and cannot bypass permission checks.
- Prepare recovery. Define how to revoke a connector, remove poisoned documents, rotate credentials, notify affected users, and investigate logs.
What individual users can do
Users cannot repair a weak architecture, but they can reduce exposure. Be cautious when an AI answer contains instructions to visit an unfamiliar site, upload confidential material, disable a security control, or ignore the original question. Verify important claims against the cited source, especially when a recommendation seems unusually one-sided. Do not approve an agent action merely because the assistant says it is required by a retrieved document.
For sensitive work, prefer assistants that show citations and source names, explain requested actions, and ask for confirmation before sending data or changing systems. A citation improves review; it does not prove that the cited page was safe or that its embedded instructions were legitimate.
Limits of current defenses
No detector, prompt template, or delimiter guarantees immunity. Models are probabilistic, content formats evolve, and attackers can combine social engineering with ordinary search-engine optimization. Strong defenses therefore focus on limiting what a compromised model can reach and do. Layering controls may create complexity, delay, and false positives, but those costs are usually more manageable than allowing an untrusted page to authorize access to private data or external actions.
Indirect prompt injection is best understood as an application-security problem involving language models, retrieval, identity, and tools. The central design rule is simple: retrieved content can inform an answer, but it must not silently become an authority to access data or act on the user’s behalf.
The Bottom Line
AI search is at risk from indirect prompt injection whenever untrusted retrieved content can influence a model with meaningful data or tool access. Treat every external source as untrusted, preserve provenance and permissions, minimize capabilities, require approval for consequential actions, and test the entire retrieval-to-action pipeline.
