Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an observance that honors Indigenous peoples’ living cultures, histories, resilience, contributions, and sovereignty. It also recognizes the violence, displacement, and forced assimilation Indigenous communities have endured and continues a public discussion about how the United States remembers colonization. Many jurisdictions observe it on the second Monday in October, the date traditionally associated with Columbus Day, but the official name, legal status, and activities depend on the state, locality, Tribal Nation, school, or organization.
What Indigenous Peoples’ Day means
The word “Indigenous” refers to peoples with longstanding historical, cultural, and political ties to the lands where they live. In the United States, that includes many distinct Tribal Nations and Native communities, each with its own government, traditions, languages, and identity. “Indigenous peoples” is therefore not a single cultural group or a substitute for the names that individual Nations use for themselves.
The observance places those communities in the present, not only in the past. It recognizes cultural continuity, achievements, and self-determination while acknowledging the effects of colonization, land dispossession, violence, and assimilation policies. The 2024 presidential proclamation described the day as honoring Indigenous peoples’ “strength, courage, and resilience” and their contributions, while reaffirming respect for Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

When is Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
In much of the United States, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is held on the second Monday in October. In 2026, that date is October 12. The date is significant because it is also the date used for Columbus Day under federal law and in many state calendars.
A calendar date does not tell you which name a government or institution will use. One jurisdiction may call October 12 Indigenous Peoples’ Day, another may retain Columbus Day, and another may list both. Tribal Nations and community organizations may hold events on a different day that better fits local schedules or cultural priorities.
| Question | What can vary |
|---|---|
| Date | Often the second Monday in October; local events may use another date. |
| Official name | Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Native American Day, Columbus Day, both names, or another locally chosen term. |
| Legal status | Federal designation, state holiday, local proclamation, school observance, or community event. |
| Purpose | Cultural celebration, historical education, remembrance, protest, advocacy, or a combination. |
Is Indigenous Peoples’ Day a federal holiday?
As of the 2026 federal proclamations described in the available records, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not an enacted federal holiday. The White House issued a 2026 proclamation designating October 12 as Columbus Day. The Associated Press reported that President Donald Trump would not recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day alongside Columbus Day.
On September 24, 2026, the Senate considered a resolution expressing support for designating the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day and supporting its official designation as a federal holiday. A Senate resolution expressing support does not itself create a federal holiday. Creating or changing a federal holiday requires enacted legislation signed into law.

This distinction matters for federal offices, mail service, financial markets, and federal employees. A state or city can recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day even when the federal calendar uses another name. A local proclamation also does not automatically close federal offices or change federal pay and leave rules.
| Level | What recognition means in practice | 2026 example |
|---|---|---|
| Federal government | Official federal proclamations and the federal holiday calendar. | October 12 was designated as Columbus Day in the 2026 proclamation described above. |
| Congress | Resolutions can express support; enacted legislation is needed to establish a federal holiday. | The September 24 Senate resolution supported federal designation but did not enact it. |
| State government | A state may name a holiday, issue a proclamation, or direct state agencies and schools. | California and North Carolina proclaimed October 12, 2026, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. |
| Local government or institution | Cities, counties, schools, universities, and employers set their own calendars and programs. | Policies differ even within the same state. |
How the observance developed
Early state designations
There is no single nationwide founding date. The Bureau of Indian Affairs says an American Indian Day may have first been formally designated in 1916, when New York’s governor selected the second Saturday in May. The wording and date show that early observances did not follow one national model.
Over subsequent decades, states and communities adopted different names and dates. The Associated Press describes Indigenous Peoples’ Day as having been recognized in various forms for decades. California enacted legislation creating Native American Day as an official state holiday in 1998. That history helps explain why today’s calendar remains a patchwork rather than a uniform national practice.
The connection with Columbus Day
Many modern observances use the second Monday in October because that is the date associated with Columbus Day. Some jurisdictions observe both holidays; others replace or rename the local Columbus Day observance. The change reflects a debate over whether public commemorations should center Christopher Columbus or acknowledge the consequences of European colonization for Indigenous peoples.

The Associated Press characterizes contemporary observances as celebration, protest, and reclamation of history. Supporters commonly emphasize Indigenous resilience, cultural continuity, and contributions, while also drawing attention to colonial harms and present-day policy concerns. The choice of name can therefore communicate a jurisdiction’s stated priorities without implying that every Indigenous community shares one view.
Why some places use Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day
Jurisdictions that use Indigenous Peoples’ Day generally do so to center the people who lived on the continent before European arrival and whose descendants and Tribal Nations continue to exist. The observance can correct a schoolbook narrative that treats Indigenous history as finished and can make space for the sovereignty of contemporary Tribal Nations.
Renaming a local holiday does not erase history. A well-designed observance can teach about Columbus, European expansion, treaties, displacement, and assimilation while also presenting Indigenous perspectives and achievements. The practical question is not simply which label appears on a calendar, but whose history is taught, who is invited to speak, and whether Indigenous people have a meaningful role in planning the event.

Cultural gatherings
- Public ceremonies and blessings led by Indigenous participants.
- Traditional and contemporary dances, music, storytelling, and speeches.
- Powwows, arts demonstrations, markets, and exhibitions.
- Foodways, language activities, and displays of crafts or artwork.
Event organizers should follow the host community’s protocols. Some cultural practices are public, while others are private or reserved for community members. Asking permission before photographing people, regalia, ceremonies, or sacred objects is a basic matter of respect.
Education and historical interpretation
- Lectures or classroom lessons led by Indigenous educators, historians, or Tribal representatives.
- Discussions of local Indigenous Nations, treaties, land history, and contemporary governance.
- Film screenings, museum programs, reading groups, and oral-history projects.
- Lessons that connect historical events with current questions about language, land, environmental stewardship, and political rights.
Education is stronger when it identifies the specific Nations connected to the place where the program occurs, uses the names those Nations prefer, and includes contemporary voices rather than presenting Indigenous people only in historical scenes.
Public discussion and advocacy
Some events address issues such as Tribal sovereignty, treaty obligations, environmental protection, language revitalization, missing and murdered Indigenous people, or access to cultural resources. Others are explicitly protests against Columbus Day or against inaccurate representations of Indigenous history. A participant may experience the day as celebration and advocacy at the same time.
How to find a local event
- Check Tribal Nation announcements. Look for the official website or social channels of Nations whose homelands or communities are near you.
- Search Indigenous-led organizations. Cultural centers, Native student groups, museums, and community organizations often publish the most specific schedules.
- Review government listings. State, county, and city calendars can show proclamations, closures, and public programs.
- Check schools and libraries. Libraries, universities, and school districts may list lectures, exhibitions, or educational sessions.
- Confirm details before traveling. Verify the date, registration rules, accessibility, photography policy, weather plan, and whether an event is open to the public.
Local Indigenous-led sources are preferable to generic holiday lists because they can explain the event’s purpose and the community’s protocols. An event calendar may change after a proclamation is issued, so confirm details close to the date.

How schools, workplaces, and individuals can observe respectfully
For schools
- Teach Indigenous history across the year rather than limiting it to one celebration.
- Use materials created or reviewed by Indigenous educators and identify the specific Nations discussed.
- Invite Indigenous speakers through established community relationships and compensate them appropriately.
- Avoid costumes, simulated ceremonies, stereotypes, and assignments that ask students to impersonate Indigenous people.
- Explain that Tribal Nations are governments and contemporary communities, not relics of the past.
For workplaces and public institutions
- State clearly which date and name the institution recognizes.
- Explain whether offices are open; local recognition does not necessarily change federal or employer schedules.
- Provide paid opportunities for learning, such as a speaker, exhibit, or discussion led by an Indigenous expert.
- Do not use sacred imagery, mascots, or cultural symbols as decorative marketing without permission.
For individuals
- Learn whose traditional homelands you live or work on, using reliable Indigenous-led sources.
- Attend a public event respectfully and follow its stated rules.
- Support Indigenous artists, educators, and organizations directly when you choose to purchase or donate.
- Read more than one Indigenous perspective; no single person speaks for every Nation.
Common misunderstandings
“It is the same holiday everywhere.”
No. Names, dates, legal effects, and programs vary by jurisdiction. A city’s proclamation cannot be used as evidence of a nationwide holiday.
“Indigenous peoples are only part of history.”
Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities are living societies with governments, citizens, languages, cultural institutions, and ongoing political concerns. The observance explicitly emphasizes that continuity.
“The day must be either a celebration or a protest.”
Communities use it in different ways. A gathering can celebrate culture, teach history, remember harm, and advocate for current rights in one program.

“A presidential proclamation represents every Indigenous person.”
A proclamation is a statement by the issuing president. It does not speak for every Tribal Nation or resolve differences among Indigenous communities.
What changed for the 2026 observance?
For October 12, 2026, federal and local designations diverged. The federal proclamation described in the available records designated Columbus Day, while California and North Carolina proclaimed the date Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The Senate’s September 24 resolution showed congressional support for federal designation but did not change the federal holiday calendar.
Because proclamations, event schedules, and institutional calendars can change, readers should verify the current listing for the place they care about. The official name used by a state does not determine how a neighboring city, school, employer, or Tribal Nation will observe the day.
