HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) is a browser-enforced rule that tells a host’s visitors to use HTTPS for future connections. A site sends the rule in the Strict-Transport-Security response header over HTTPS; the browser remembers it for the declared max-age, rewrites later HTTP attempts to HTTPS, and will not provide a bypass for certificate warnings on that HSTS host.
The safest deployment is gradual: make every intended hostname work correctly on HTTPS, send HSTS only from HTTPS responses, test with a short lifetime, then expand the lifetime and scope. Add includeSubDomains only after every covered subdomain is ready. Treat preload as a separate, durable commitment rather than a routine directive.
What HSTS is and what it changes
HSTS stands for HTTP Strict Transport Security. It is defined by RFC 6797, published by the IETF in November 2012. A website communicates the policy with an HTTP response header:
Strict-Transport-Security: max-age=31536000
The browser accepts this policy only when it arrives over a valid HTTPS connection. Once stored, the policy is associated with the host name. When a user later types an HTTP URL, follows an HTTP link, or is redirected toward HTTP, a browser that honors HSTS upgrades the request to HTTPS before making the connection. The policy applies according to the browser’s rules across ports, so moving an application to an alternate port does not automatically avoid the policy.

HSTS is a client-side enforcement mechanism, not an encryption feature installed on the server. HTTPS and a correctly configured certificate provide the encrypted connection; HSTS prevents a browser from quietly falling back to HTTP after the user has visited the site securely. It also removes the usual “continue anyway” path for certificate warnings on an HSTS host. An expired, mismatched, revoked, or otherwise invalid certificate therefore becomes a hard failure until the certificate or service is fixed.
How a browser learns and remembers the policy
The first secure visit
The browser must receive the header from an HTTPS response before it can remember HSTS. A header sent on an ordinary HTTP response is ignored by design, because an attacker on an insecure network could otherwise set or alter the policy. This creates a practical first-visit consideration: a brand-new visitor who has never received the policy can still make an initial HTTP request unless the domain is already covered by a browser preload list or another control.
Subsequent requests
After storing the policy, the browser applies it for the number of seconds in max-age. It upgrades HTTP URL attempts, including links and manually entered addresses, and validates the HTTPS certificate without offering an HSTS bypass. Sending the header again over HTTPS refreshes the remembered expiration.
Host and subdomain scope
Without includeSubDomains, the policy covers the host that sent the header. With that directive, it also covers subdomains beneath that host. A policy stored for example.com and a policy stored for api.example.com are separate browser records; removing one does not automatically remove the other. This distinction matters during rollback and when different teams operate different subdomains.
Understanding the HSTS directives
max-age
max-age is required and is measured in seconds. It tells the browser how long to remember the policy after receiving it over HTTPS. The common one-year value is 31536000 seconds. During a pilot, use a much shorter value so a configuration mistake expires quickly; increase it only after the site has survived normal traffic and operational tests.
includeSubDomains
This optional directive extends enforcement to every subdomain covered by the parent name. It is appropriate only when each affected name has a valid certificate, HTTPS listener, working redirects where needed, and an application that functions over HTTPS. Forgotten names such as old administration portals, mail-related web services, staging systems, vendor callbacks, or device-management pages can become unreachable if they are not ready.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →preload
preload is a non-standard signal used when the owner is applying for inclusion in browser preload lists. MDN’s documented requirements include at least 31536000 seconds of max-age and includeSubDomains. OWASP shows this commonly used two-year header:
Strict-Transport-Security: max-age=63072000; includeSubDomains; preload
The word preload in a response does not by itself place a domain in every browser’s list. Submission, validation, and distribution are separate steps. Once a domain is distributed in a preload list, browsers can enforce HTTPS before the first visit has received a live header. Removal is consequently slower and operationally harder than changing a server response.

Why enable HSTS
- Blocks downgrade attempts: a network attacker cannot rely on redirecting a returning visitor from HTTPS to HTTP when the browser has an active HSTS policy.
- Removes mixed URL choices: HTTP links and manually entered HTTP addresses are upgraded automatically.
- Turns certificate errors into a clear stop: users cannot bypass certificate warnings on the protected host, reducing the chance of accepting an impersonated service.
- Creates a consistent HTTPS boundary: a site can require secure access even when an application, bookmark, or redirect still produces an HTTP URL.
HSTS does not repair insecure content, issue certificates, encrypt an HTTP-only service, or protect non-browser clients that do not implement HSTS. APIs, mobile applications, command-line clients, and service-to-service integrations still need their own TLS validation and redirect or endpoint policies.
Choose a rollout level
The following patterns use values and directives documented for HSTS. Pick the narrowest policy that matches your current readiness.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Rollout pattern | Header | Scope | Operational commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-host baseline | max-age=31536000 |
The host that sends the header | One year of browser enforcement after each successful HTTPS response |
| Parent plus subdomains | max-age=31536000; includeSubDomains |
The host and its subdomains | Every covered subdomain must remain usable over HTTPS |
| Preload-oriented deployment | max-age=63072000; includeSubDomains; preload |
The host and its subdomains, with a preload application | Two years in the example header plus the harder-to-reverse preload commitment |
Do not choose the largest value merely because it looks more secure. A long lifetime magnifies the effect of an outage or certificate mistake. Reliability and complete hostname inventory are prerequisites for broad scope.
Prepare the site before sending HSTS
Inventory names and traffic paths
List the canonical web host, aliases, regional names, administrative interfaces, API endpoints, staging systems, customer-specific subdomains, and any name that could become covered by includeSubDomains. Identify which component terminates TLS for each one: a web server, application framework, load balancer, reverse proxy, or content-delivery platform.
Make HTTPS complete
- Install a certificate whose names cover every intended hostname.
- Serve a complete certificate chain and verify renewal before the current certificate expires.
- Ensure the HTTPS listener is reachable from the networks your users require.
- Update absolute URLs, scripts, stylesheets, images, forms, redirects, cookies, and API calls so the application does not depend on HTTP.
- Check health checks, webhooks, payment callbacks, identity-provider redirects, and monitoring agents that may still call an HTTP address.
Keep HTTP behavior separate
Continue redirecting HTTP to HTTPS if you want to help visitors who have not yet learned HSTS, but do not rely on that redirect as the security policy. The HSTS header belongs on HTTPS responses. Browsers ignore it when delivered over insecure HTTP.
Safe step-by-step enablement
- Confirm the canonical HTTPS service. Open the production HTTPS URL and each alias. Check the certificate name, chain, expiration, redirects, static assets, login flows, uploads, APIs, and administrative paths.
- Start with a short test lifetime. Add
Strict-Transport-Securityto responses from the HTTPS virtual host or TLS-terminating component. Leave outincludeSubDomainswhile the hostname inventory is incomplete. - Check the actual response. Do not assume that a configuration file is active. Inspect a production response with browser developer tools or an HTTP header command and verify the exact spelling and value.
- Exercise ordinary and unusual paths. Test the home page, deep links, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, sign-in and sign-out, file downloads, APIs, background jobs, alternate HTTPS ports, and every subdomain that might later be covered.
- Watch operations through a renewal cycle. Confirm that certificate renewal, load-balancer failover, cache behavior, and deployment rollback continue to produce valid HTTPS responses with the intended header.
- Increase
max-age. Once the pilot is stable, move toward the one-year value of31536000seconds. The browser will retain the previous policy until its old expiration, so changing the server value does not instantly clear existing records. - Add
includeSubDomainsonly after full readiness. Recheck every current and future subdomain, including names maintained by other teams or providers. - Consider preload last. Verify the current preload service requirements, maintain at least one year of
max-age, keepincludeSubDomains, and obtain owner approval for the difficulty of reversing a preloaded policy.
Where to configure the header
The exact control depends on where TLS terminates. The implementation requirement is the same: the HTTPS response that reaches the browser must contain the intended header, and an intermediary must not remove or overwrite it.

Microsoft documents HSTS as a site-level setting in IIS. Configure a one-year max-age of 31536000 seconds and enable the includeSubDomains option only when all subordinate names are ready. Review the setting on the HTTPS site, not merely on an HTTP binding, and verify the emitted response after applying it. Microsoft also cautions about the relationship between the subdomain option and preload-list submission, so treat that combination as a deliberate release decision.

Header always set Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=31536000"
Use the longer directive value only after testing. If you add includeSubDomains, keep the rule on the TLS-enabled virtual host and confirm that proxy or cache layers preserve it.
Nginx
In the HTTPS server block, an equivalent configuration is:
add_header Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=31536000" always;
The always parameter helps return the header on responses beyond the usual success cases. Keep the directive out of an HTTP-only server block; a header emitted there is ignored by browsers and can create a false sense of coverage.
Application frameworks
Framework middleware can add the header when the application itself terminates TLS. Ensure it runs only when the request is genuinely HTTPS, especially when the application sits behind a proxy. Configure the proxy’s trusted-forwarded-protocol setting correctly, then inspect the public response rather than relying on an internal request flag.
Load balancers, reverse proxies, and CDNs
If one of these components terminates TLS, configure the response-header policy there or at the layer that consistently sees the public HTTPS request. Test both cache hits and misses, redirects generated by the edge, error responses, and origin failover. A downstream origin header is not useful if the edge removes it; conversely, adding it at the edge can cover all origins only when every hostname routed through that policy is ready.
Verify HSTS from the outside
Inspect headers with a command
Run a header-only request against the real HTTPS hostname:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null https://example.com
Look for exactly one Strict-Transport-Security header and confirm its directives. Repeat the check against each canonical name, alias, subdomain, and alternate HTTPS port that is in scope. If a proxy adds a second value, fix the duplication rather than assuming browsers will combine the policies as intended.
Use browser developer tools
Open the Network panel, reload the HTTPS page, select the document response, and inspect response headers. Verify that the response came from HTTPS, that the value is not hidden by a redirect, and that the final response from the public endpoint contains the header.

Test redirects and certificates
- Enter an HTTP URL in a clean browser profile and confirm that the resulting request is HTTPS.
- Test a direct HTTP link to a deep path, not only the home page.
- Check every certificate name and chain after renewal.
- Try intended nonstandard HTTPS ports and confirm that applications and firewalls handle the upgraded request.
- Review browser, synthetic-monitoring, and server logs for failed requests after each scope increase.
A clean profile or a browser that has never visited the site is useful for testing the first secure acquisition. A profile with an existing policy is useful for testing enforcement and rollback; use both because they represent different user states.
Common failure modes and fixes
The header appears on HTTP but not HTTPS
Browsers ignore an HSTS header received over HTTP. Move the configuration to the HTTPS response path and verify the public endpoint after redirects, proxies, and caching.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The header is missing on some responses
Multiple virtual hosts, load-balancer listeners, application error handlers, or CDN rules may be involved. Compare a successful page, a redirect, a 4xx or 5xx response, and a cache hit. Configure the component that serves the inconsistent response, or use a response-header rule that covers the required status codes.
A subdomain stopped working after adding includeSubDomains
That name is now required to use HTTPS. Install a valid certificate, provide an HTTPS service, update hard-coded HTTP links, or remove the parent directive while you repair the dependency. Removing the directive does not instantly erase a policy already stored by browsers; wait for the stored lifetime or explicitly expire it over HTTPS.
Visitors see an unrecoverable certificate error
HSTS intentionally prevents bypassing certificate warnings. Correct the certificate name, chain, validity period, or TLS endpoint. Do not tell users to click through the warning; that defeats the protection and may not be possible in an HSTS-enabled browser.
The site still accepts HTTP for some users
Those users may not have received the header yet, may use a client without HSTS support, or may be reaching a hostname that never sent the policy. Keep a reliable HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect for first-time visitors, ensure every intended hostname sends the header, and use preload only after meeting its requirements and accepting its commitment.

Strict-Transport-Security: max-age=0
It cannot be delivered effectively over HTTP because browsers ignore HSTS headers from insecure responses. Keep the HTTPS service working long enough for affected browsers to receive the zero value. A missing header does not immediately remove an existing policy; the previous policy remains until its stored expiration. If a longer value was previously sent, clients that do not revisit the site will continue enforcing it during that period.
Subdomain records require separate attention. If a parent policy used includeSubDomains, send the expiration response from the parent over HTTPS, and check independently stored policies on subdomains. A domain that has been accepted into a browser preload list cannot be rolled back merely by removing preload or sending max-age=0; removal from distributed lists is a separate, slower operational process. During an incident, restore valid certificates and HTTPS service first, then coordinate any preload removal.
HSTS decisions for different site estates
One public site with no subdomains
Begin with the host-only policy and the one-year target once HTTPS is stable. Keep an HTTP redirect for visitors who have not yet learned the policy. There is no reason to add includeSubDomains simply because the directive exists.
A parent domain with many teams
Assign ownership for every subdomain and record certificate renewal responsibility before enabling the parent directive. A shared inventory and an expiration procedure are more important than choosing a larger max-age immediately.
A platform with customer-created subdomains
Determine whether customers can create names that would fall under the parent domain. If the platform cannot guarantee HTTPS for each name, keep HSTS limited to a host whose scope is controlled. Adding includeSubDomains before that control exists can make customer sites fail at once.
A site considering preload
Use preload only when HTTPS is a permanent requirement for the domain and all subdomains, certificates, redirects, and dependencies are continuously managed. The benefit is protection before the first live header; the cost is a durable commitment that can outlast a deployment mistake and requires an explicit removal process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHSTS versus related controls
- HTTPS redirects: a redirect helps an HTTP client reach HTTPS, but the initial HTTP request still occurs. HSTS upgrades the request in a supporting browser before that insecure exchange.
- Certificate management: certificates prove the identity of the TLS endpoint. HSTS does not issue, renew, or validate certificates; it makes certificate errors non-bypassable for the protected host.
- Content Security Policy: CSP can restrict where a page loads content from and can address mixed-content behavior. HSTS governs the scheme used to reach the host itself.
- Preload lists: preload is an optional distribution mechanism for an HSTS commitment, not a replacement for serving the response header correctly.
Practical deployment checklist
- Inventory every hostname and identify the TLS-terminating component.
- Verify certificates, chains, renewals, redirects, assets, APIs, callbacks, and administration paths over HTTPS.
- Emit
Strict-Transport-Securityonly on HTTPS responses. - Begin with a short test
max-ageand host-only scope. - Inspect real external responses from each listener, proxy, cache, and status path.
- Increase to
31536000seconds after stable testing. - Add
includeSubDomainsonly when every affected name is ready. - Use the
63072000; includeSubDomains; preloadpattern only for a deliberate preload application that meets current requirements. - Document the HTTPS rollback response
max-age=0and remember that stored subdomain and preload policies need separate handling.
Key takeaways
HSTS is a browser memory and enforcement policy delivered by an HTTPS response header. max-age controls how long the browser remembers it, includeSubDomains expands the affected names, and preload adds an optional commitment that can apply before the first visit. Deploy it in stages, verify the public response and every covered hostname, and treat certificate readiness as non-negotiable. If the policy must be withdrawn, send max-age=0 over HTTPS, allow existing policies to expire, and handle subdomain or preload records independently.
