HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper—also shown as HP.OMEN.Overlay.OverlayHelper, OMEN Overlay Helper, or OmenOverlayHelper—is a background component of HP OMEN Gaming Hub. It supports the in-game overlay, performance monitoring, and related gaming controls.
It is not identified by HP as malware. However, Windows 11 users may see a User Account Control prompt saying, “HP.OMEN.Overlay.OverlayHelper — Do you want to install this app?” If you do not use the OMEN overlay, you can turn it off, disable its startup entry, or uninstall OMEN Gaming Hub.
What is HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper?
HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper is part of HP OMEN Gaming Hub. It runs in the background so OMEN’s in-game overlay can display information such as performance statistics and provide gaming-related controls.
The name is inconsistent across Windows and HP support instructions. You may see any of these labels:

OverlayHelperOmenOverlayHelper
The capitalization difference does not necessarily indicate a different program. The component may appear in a UAC prompt, Task Manager, Startup apps, or Task Scheduler under different names.
Is it malware?
HP Support identifies the helper as a legitimate OMEN Gaming Hub component, not as malware. That does not mean every file with a similar name is automatically safe. If you are investigating a suspicious copy, right-click the running process in Task Manager, choose Open file location, and check that it belongs to an HP OMEN Gaming Hub installation. You can also scan the file with Windows Security.
The Windows permission prompt usually appears because the helper is trying to install, update, or repair part of OMEN Gaming Hub. If you do not want the overlay, do not repeatedly approve the prompt before changing the relevant OMEN or Windows startup setting.

Disable the overlay in OMEN Gaming Hub
This is the least disruptive option because it targets the overlay rather than removing OMEN Gaming Hub altogether.
- Open OMEN Gaming Hub from the Start menu.
- Open Settings.
- Turn off Overlay.
Depending on the OMEN Gaming Hub version and computer model, the setting may be described as in-game overlay or as an option related to performance monitoring. HP’s current path is OMEN Gaming Hub → Settings → Overlay, but the exact toggle label can vary.
This setting may not stop every permission prompt. HP support cases show that a separate startup entry or scheduled task can continue launching the helper even after the in-app overlay is disabled.

Disable it from Windows 11 Startup apps
If the helper starts with Windows, disable its startup entry:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps. Older Windows and HP instructions may call this tab Startup.
- Look for
HP.OMEN.Overlay.OverlayHelper,HP.OMEN.Overlay.overlayHelper, OMEN Overlay Helper, or another OMEN Gaming Hub-related entry. - Right-click the entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling the entry prevents it from starting through that particular startup mechanism. It does not uninstall OMEN Gaming Hub or remove the helper’s files.
End the currently running process
To stop the helper for the current Windows session:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Find OMEN Overlay Helper under Processes.
- Right-click it and select End task.
This is temporary. Windows or OMEN Gaming Hub may launch the process again at the next sign-in, after a game starts, or when another OMEN component requests it. Use Startup apps or Task Scheduler if you want to prevent automatic relaunching.
Check Task Scheduler if the prompt keeps returning
A scheduled task can launch the helper even when no matching entry appears in Task Manager’s Startup apps.

Some HP support instructions also mention deleting the task. Disable it first so you can restore it if another OMEN feature stops working. The Hewlett-Packard/OMEN path and task names come from an older HP support case, and they are not guaranteed to exist on every current OMEN Gaming Hub installation.

If the prompt started after you disabled and re-enabled a startup item, a damaged startup task or permissions problem may be involved. Disabling the related scheduled task or reinstalling OMEN Gaming Hub may resolve that condition.
Uninstall OMEN Gaming Hub
If you do not use OMEN’s overlay, controls, or other features, removing OMEN Gaming Hub is the more complete solution. It can also remove access to OMEN-specific gaming features and hotkey controls.
Use Windows 11 Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps.
- Find OMEN Gaming Hub.
- Click the three-dot menu and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when the removal finishes.
Installed apps is the current Windows 11 wording. Older guides may call this page Apps & features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the classic uninstall dialog
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select OMEN Gaming Hub.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the prompts.
- Restart the computer.
What to do if the helper remains after uninstalling
If the prompt or startup entry remains after a normal uninstall, restart Windows and check both locations again:
- Task Manager → Startup apps
- Task Scheduler Library → Hewlett-Packard → OMEN
Remove or disable only entries clearly associated with OMEN Gaming Hub. Do not delete unrelated HP tasks simply because they are located in a Hewlett-Packard folder.
HP Support has also recommended a reinstall-and-remove cycle when OMEN Gaming Hub leaves startup or scheduled-task entries behind:

FAQ
Why does HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper ask for permission to install?
It is generally an OMEN Gaming Hub component attempting to install, update, or repair the overlay helper. HP identifies the component as legitimate OMEN software. If the prompt repeats, check Startup apps and Task Scheduler rather than approving it repeatedly.
Will turning off the overlay permanently stop OverlayHelper?
Not always. The in-app toggle disables the overlay feature, but a startup entry or scheduled task may still launch the helper. If prompts continue, disable the OMEN entry in Task Manager and inspect Task Scheduler.
Does End task permanently disable OMEN Overlay Helper?
No. End task stops the current process only. It can start again after a restart, sign-in, game launch, or OMEN component update.
Can I disable HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper without uninstalling OMEN Gaming Hub?
Yes. Turn off the overlay in OMEN Gaming Hub and disable the related Startup apps entry. If necessary, disable a matching OMEN task in Task Scheduler. These options preserve other OMEN Gaming Hub features.
What if I cannot find the helper in Startup apps?
Check Task Scheduler by running taskschd.msc. Browse to Task Scheduler Library → Hewlett-Packard → OMEN and look for OverlayHelper or OmenOverlayHelper. The folder or task may not exist on every OMEN installation.
Is HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper a Windows service?
HP’s available support guidance describes it as an OMEN Gaming Hub background component. It does not identify a Windows service with the exact name HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper, so do not assume that a service with that name exists.
The Bottom Line
HP.OMEN.Overlay.Helper is normally part of HP OMEN Gaming Hub, not malware. Start by opening OMEN Gaming Hub → Settings and turning off the overlay. If the helper still appears, disable its entry in Task Manager → Startup apps, check taskschd.msc for an OMEN scheduled task, or uninstall OMEN Gaming Hub if you do not need its features. Remember that End task is only a temporary stop.
