The best-supported canon reading is Option C, “Deathwish,” which leads to the mission “The Third Way.” It keeps Franklin, Michael and Trevor alive and fits the continuity implied by later GTA Online content. That is an evidence-based conclusion, not a formal Rockstar announcement naming Option C as the one official ending. Rockstar’s published GTA VI material has not confirmed that any ending of GTA V changes the new game’s plot or that Franklin, Michael or Trevor will appear.
The short answer: Option C is the de facto canon ending
Near the end of Grand Theft Auto V, Franklin must choose among three outcomes. He can kill Trevor, kill Michael, or choose “Deathwish,” the route in which the three protagonists work together against their enemies. The final mission on that route is called “The Third Way.”

Option C is the strongest canon interpretation because later GTA Online dialogue and story material have been read as placing Michael and Trevor alive, while Franklin remains part of the game’s ongoing world. A choice that preserves all three protagonists therefore fits that later continuity better than either ending that kills one of them.

The wording matters. Available reporting, including coverage from IGN, supports a continuity inference rather than a quoted Rockstar statement saying, “Option C is canon.” It is accurate to call Deathwish the best-supported, de facto or continuity-compatible ending. It is not accurate to present it as an explicitly announced Rockstar ruling.

What happens in each GTA V ending?
Franklin’s final decision creates three broad branches. The choice changes which protagonist survives the story and determines the final mission sequence you see.
Option A: Kill Trevor
Franklin chooses to eliminate Trevor. Trevor is no longer available as a living protagonist after the ending, while Franklin and Michael survive that branch. Because later material has been interpreted as treating Trevor as alive, this outcome creates a continuity problem for a single timeline that includes those references.
Option B: Kill Michael
Franklin chooses to eliminate Michael. Michael is removed from the story, while Franklin and Trevor survive. As with Option A, this conflicts with later continuity evidence that has been read as placing the character alive.

Franklin refuses to kill either partner and attempts the “Deathwish” plan instead. “The Third Way” is the closing mission for this route, and all three protagonists remain alive when it is complete. That outcome gives later stories the broadest room to use the established cast without reversing a death shown in the main campaign.
| Ending | Franklin’s decision | Protagonists left alive | Fit with reported GTA Online continuity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Option A | Kill Trevor | Franklin and Michael | Weaker: later material has been interpreted as treating Trevor as alive. |
| Option B | Kill Michael | Franklin and Trevor | Weaker: later material has been interpreted as treating Michael as alive. |
| Option C (“Deathwish”) | Refuse to kill either protagonist | Franklin, Michael and Trevor | Strongest: preserves the trio referenced by the continuing online setting. |
Why Deathwish is considered canon even without a formal announcement
“Canon” means the version of events treated as part of a continuing fictional timeline. In a branching game, however, every ending can be valid inside the player’s own save. Rockstar lets the player experience all three outcomes; the game does not display a final notice declaring one route official and the others non-canon.

- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
The canon question becomes more practical when later content needs a shared history. GTA Online updates and dialogue provide that shared context. Reporting has connected those appearances and references with a world in which Michael and Trevor are still alive and Franklin continues to exist. Option C is the only GTA V ending that naturally accommodates all of those characters.
That logic produces a hierarchy of confidence:
- Directly shown in the game: all three endings are playable outcomes selected by Franklin.
- Supported by later continuity: the all-survive route best matches the characters and events discussed in GTA Online reporting.
- Not formally established: no cited Rockstar statement explicitly labels Option C “the canon ending.”
Calling Deathwish “the true ending” without that qualification overstates the evidence. “Best-supported canon reading” communicates both the practical answer and the remaining uncertainty.
What GTA Online tells us about the ending
The significance of Option C does not come from a sales figure, a developer poll or a published statistics page. It comes from narrative continuity. Later online story content has been interpreted as acknowledging Michael and Trevor as living figures, while Franklin appears in the online setting as well. If those references are read as part of the same timeline as the single-player campaign, the all-survive branch is the least contradictory choice.
This is still an interpretation of in-game material reported by a secondary source. It is not the same as Rockstar publishing a timeline document that lists “The Third Way” as a required event. The distinction is important for readers comparing their own playthrough with the shared world: choosing Option A or B does not invalidate a personal save, but those branches fit the later online references less comfortably.
Does GTA V’s ending directly determine GTA VI?
No direct consequence has been confirmed in the official GTA VI material reviewed. Rockstar’s overview introduces Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, places the story in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, and describes the pair’s criminal circumstances and dependence on one another. It does not explain which GTA V ending occurred, say that Deathwish is required, or state that a previous protagonist returns.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
That means two statements can be true at once:
- Option C is the best-supported choice for the continuing GTA V/GTA Online timeline.
- The published premise for GTA VI does not confirm that this choice changes Jason and Lucia’s story.
If GTA VI uses the same continuity suggested by GTA Online, Deathwish would avoid the contradiction of having already killed Michael or Trevor. That is a conditional inference, not a plot confirmation. Until Rockstar supplies a story detail, trailer, interview or in-game reference connecting the two games, readers should not treat the ending as a documented cause of events in Vice City or Leonida.

Will Franklin, Michael or Trevor be in GTA VI?
The official overview reviewed does not confirm an appearance by any of them. It names Jason and Lucia as the central pair and focuses on their relationship and criminal predicament. The absence of a name in an overview is not proof that a character can never appear, but it is also not evidence of a cameo, mission or playable role.
Franklin
Franklin’s survival under Option C and his later presence in GTA Online make him the easiest character for fans to imagine carrying forward. Nothing in the published GTA VI description, however, promises that he will meet Jason or Lucia.
Michael
Michael survives only in Options B and C, and later continuity reporting has been read as keeping him alive. That supports the plausibility of his existence in a shared timeline, not his confirmed participation in the new game.
Trevor
Trevor survives only in Options A and C. Because later online material has been interpreted as treating him as alive, Option C remains the least disruptive single-player ending. There is still no official confirmation that Trevor appears in GTA VI.

Rockstar’s landing page listed GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and showed a planned November 19, 2026 release date when it was checked on October 13, 2026. Release dates and product details can change, so that date should be rechecked against Rockstar’s page before publication or purchase decisions.
Those platform and date details are useful status information, not evidence about canon. The same official material describes the setting and protagonists but does not connect the game’s plot to any of Franklin’s three choices.
How to use the canon answer when replaying GTA V
If you want to see the ending most compatible with the later shared timeline, choose Option C, “Deathwish”, when Franklin is presented with the three final choices. Completing that branch takes you through “The Third Way” and leaves Franklin, Michael and Trevor alive.

Common misconceptions about GTA V canon
“Rockstar officially declared Option C canon.”
There is no cited formal declaration in the available material. The stronger and more precise claim is that later GTA Online continuity points to the all-survive route.
“Choosing Option A or B deletes that character from every GTA story.”
Those choices define the outcome of that branch of GTA V. A later shared storyline can use a different branch as its continuity without changing what happened in your save.
“Because Deathwish is canon, GTA VI must include the surviving protagonists.”
Survival makes an appearance possible, not confirmed. The official GTA VI overview reviewed does not promise a return for Franklin, Michael or Trevor.
“The GTA VI setting proves which GTA V ending happened.”
Vice City and Leonida establish the new game’s location, while the overview supplies Jason and Lucia’s premise. Neither point identifies Franklin’s final choice.
What to watch for in future confirmations
A definitive answer would require a primary-source statement or unmistakable story material from Rockstar. Useful evidence would include an official timeline, a character bio that references a specific ending, or in-game dialogue that identifies “The Third Way” as a prior event. Until then, separate confirmed facts from reasonable continuity readings:
Quick Recap
- Confirmed: GTA V offers three final choices, including Deathwish and “The Third Way.”
- Best-supported interpretation: Option C preserves the characters later referenced in GTA Online.
- Not confirmed: a direct plot link from that choice to GTA VI or a return for any GTA V protagonist.
