Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is the online multiplayer mode for Ghost of Tsushima. Instead of following Jin Sakai’s mostly grounded campaign, it presents supernatural tales inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology. You form a team, choose one of four specialized classes—Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin—and take on cooperative missions, wave defense, a high-level raid, or a two-team competition.
Legends is available on PlayStation as part of qualifying editions of the game or as a standalone multiplayer release, and it is included with the PC Director’s Cut. The exact requirements differ by platform, so ownership, PlayStation Network access, an internet connection, and (on PlayStation) PlayStation Plus all matter.

How Legends differs from the main Ghost of Tsushima campaign
Legends uses the same broad setting as Ghost of Tsushima, but its premise and structure are deliberately different. The stories are told by Gyozen the Storyteller and move into ghosts, demons, curses, and other mythic elements drawn from Japanese folklore. The result is a more fantastical version of Tsushima than the single-player campaign’s historical-drama approach.
It is also built around repeatable online activities rather than one continuous solo journey. You develop a combat role, collect and equip better gear, raise your Ki rating, and replay missions at increasing difficulty. Every activity is designed around a defined party size, so the number of friends you have available can determine which mode is practical.

Legends modes at a glance
| Mode | Party format | Core objective | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Two players | Complete mythic co-op missions | Cooperative, narrative-focused |
| Survival | Four players | Defend locations from enemy waves | Cooperative, escalating defense |
| Raid | Four players | Complete a coordinated three-part challenge in Iyo’s realm | Cooperative, endgame-oriented |
| Rivals | Two teams of two | Race through waves while spending Magatama to hinder the opposing team | Competitive |
Story, Survival, and Raid put the entire group on the same side. Rivals is the exception: two teams progress through enemy waves simultaneously and compete to finish first.
Story missions: two-player mythical adventures
Story is the most direct way to experience Gyozen’s supernatural tales. Each mission supports two players and combines combat with a sequence of encounters built around that episode’s narrative. It suits a pair of friends who want a structured co-op experience rather than a long defense match.
Story has multiple difficulty levels. Higher tiers add tougher enemies and encounters, introduce bonus objectives, and provide greater rewards. Because the difficulty changes both the threat and the potential payout, a team can use Story to learn the systems before attempting the mode’s harder challenges.
Survival: four-player defense against waves
In Survival, four players defend several locations from successive enemy waves. The team must keep the objectives secure while dealing with enemies arriving from different directions. Surviving longer earns more rewards, and completing the mode’s bonus objectives increases the potential return further.
Survival is the clearest test of role coverage. A group benefits from having someone who can hold the front line, someone who can attack from range, and support or stealth options for moments when the defense starts to collapse. The mode is cooperative throughout; there is no opposing player team.
Raid: a coordinated four-player challenge
The Raid sends a four-player team into Iyo’s realm for a three-part adventure. It is intended for players with top-tier gear and depends heavily on teamwork and communication. Compared with Story and Survival, the Raid asks the party to coordinate through a longer, multi-stage sequence instead of simply completing a short mission or holding defenses against waves.
Its requirements make it a poor first stop for a new character. Build up your equipment and learn how your class contributes before committing to the Raid, especially if your group is still learning basic combat and revival responsibilities.

Rivals: competitive waves and Magatama
Rivals divides four players into two teams of two. Both teams fight enemy waves, but defeated enemies leave behind Magatama. Players spend that resource to hinder the rival team and to unlock the Final Stand waves. The first team to complete those final waves wins.

This structure combines familiar Legends combat with a race. Your team must decide when to spend Magatama on interference and when to concentrate on its own progress. A pair that clears waves quickly but ignores the resource system can lose to a slower team that times its purchases and Final Stand unlock more effectively.
The four Legends classes
Each class has a distinct battlefield role and a named ultimate ability. You can build your character around the role that best matches how you like to play, while the team as a whole benefits from covering different strengths.
Samurai: direct frontline combat
Samurai is the class for players who want to stay in the fight and defeat enemies at close range. It favors direct combat and sustained presence on the battlefield. The class ultimate is Hachiman’s Fury, a powerful attack designed to break through groups of enemies.

Hunter: ranged damage and explosive arrows
Hunter specializes in ranged attacks. Its ultimate, Eye of Uchitsune, unleashes a volley of arrows, allowing the class to damage several targets without entering melee range.
Hunter is useful when a team needs to thin out dangerous enemies before they reach a defended location or when a player is more comfortable controlling space from a distance. Positioning matters: the class’s value comes from maintaining a clear line of attack while avoiding being surrounded.
Ronin: support, revival, and the Spirit Dog
Ronin is the team-support class. Its ultimate can revive the whole team, and the class can summon a Spirit Dog. Those abilities give Ronin an important recovery role when a fight goes badly.

A Ronin does more than deal damage. The class helps a group recover from knockdowns and keep an attempt alive, which is especially valuable in difficult Survival waves and coordinated Raid encounters.

- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Assassin: stealth and high damage
Assassin focuses on stealth, agility, and high damage. Its ultimate, Shadow Strike, is a teleporting attack that lets the class reposition while striking targets.
Assassin suits players who prefer choosing the moment of engagement, removing priority targets, and moving quickly rather than standing in prolonged frontal combat. It can complement a Samurai’s pressure or a Hunter’s ranged attacks by reaching enemies that are difficult to approach conventionally.
Progression, gear, and difficulty
Legends rewards missions with gear, techniques, perks, abilities, and cosmetic items. Your equipped gear determines your Ki, the game’s rating of your character’s power. As your Ki rises, you are better prepared for the tougher difficulty tiers and the demands of the Raid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlayStation’s overview describes difficulty tiers ranging from bronze through gold, along with weekly Nightmare challenges. These tiers give the mode a progression path: begin with accessible content, improve your equipment and understanding of your class, then move toward harder encounters with better rewards.
- Gear: Raises your effective power and forms the basis of your build.
- Techniques and abilities: Add or improve the tools available to your chosen class.
- Perks: Modify how equipped items and abilities perform.
- Cosmetics: Change your character’s appearance without being the central measure of combat power.
- Ki: Summarizes the power of your equipped gear and helps indicate whether you are ready for more difficult content.
The progression system is therefore more than a simple level counter. What you equip affects how your role functions, while the class choice determines the broad tools you bring to the party.
Who should play each mode?
- Choose Story if you have one partner and want narrative co-op missions with adjustable difficulty.
- Choose Survival if you have a full four-player group and enjoy defending objectives against escalating waves.
- Choose Raid if your four-player team has high-level gear and is prepared to communicate through a three-part challenge.
- Choose Rivals if you want competition, fast decisions, and a two-versus-two race rather than a purely cooperative match.
Your preferred class can also guide the choice. Samurai and Ronin are natural fits for groups that need frontline stability or recovery, Hunter is valuable for ranged control, and Assassin provides stealth and burst damage. These are role distinctions, not restrictions: the best lineup depends on the encounter and on how well the players use their chosen tools.

A US PlayStation overview displayed a $19.99 standalone entry with a “Trial” label when checked. That display is ambiguous and should not be treated as a verified current purchase price. The $19.99 figure announced in 2021 was the standalone launch price, not a current-price guarantee.
PlayStation requirements
The current US PlayStation overview says an internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required to download and play Legends on PlayStation. Requirements and store presentation can vary by region, so confirm the terms shown for your account before purchasing.
How to access Legends on PC
The PC Director’s Cut includes Legends. Steam lists the Legends Unlock as free downloadable content that requires the base Director’s Cut; it is not a replacement for owning that base edition.
PC players can team up with PS4 and PS5 players by inviting friends through PlayStation Network. A PlayStation Network account is required to access Legends on PC. The documented cross-play arrangement is invitation-based, so do not assume that every matchmaking queue or every platform combination behaves identically.
What “cross-play” means here
Legends supports play between PC, PS4, and PS5 under the conditions described for the PC release: PC players invite console friends through PlayStation Network, and each PC player must sign in to a PSN account. This is a specific documented setup, not evidence that all platform matchmaking, account features, or queues are interchangeable.
On consoles, PS4 and PS5 players can play together in the standalone release, with progression carrying between those two console versions. If you are forming a party across platforms, verify that everyone has the required edition, network connection, and account access before attempting to launch a session.
What Legends is—and is not
Legends is a complete online multiplayer mode with its own mythic tone, classes, gear progression, difficulty tiers, and four activity types. It is not the single-player campaign with a second player added, and the standalone release is not the full Ghost of Tsushima package because it omits Jin Sakai’s campaign.
The mode’s appeal comes from choosing how to cooperate or compete: follow a two-player story, hold the line with four players, coordinate a demanding Raid, or race another pair through Rivals. Your choice of class then determines the way you contribute to that activity, while gear and Ki progression open higher difficulty levels.
