Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It dramatizes Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first erupts from beneath Sera, and follows Marcus Fenix, Dominic “Dom” Santiago, and their Bravo Squad as they try to survive an enemy no one yet understands. The immediate campaign takes place over three days and nights in the city of Kalona. Because it is an origin story rather than a replacement for the newer games, it adds context to Marcus and Dom’s history while leaving the storylines established in Gears 4 and Gears 5 intact.
What is Gears of War: E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is the next mainline chapter in the Gears series, but its setting is earlier than every numbered game released before it. The official franchise description and Xbox Wire place it 14 years before the original Gears of War. That makes it a prequel focused on the moment the series’ central conflict begins, not a side story detached from the established canon.
“E-Day” means Emergence Day: the day the Locust Horde rises from underground and launches a coordinated assault on humanity across Sera. The people on the surface do not have a prepared explanation for the attackers. They are encountering an overwhelming army of creatures that appears without warning, and the confusion is part of the story’s premise. Players learn what is happening alongside the soldiers rather than starting with a complete briefing about the Locust.

The campaign stays with Marcus, Dom, and Bravo Squad. That restricted viewpoint is deliberate. A 2026 developer feature describes the story as remaining with the squad throughout, so the audience experiences the invasion from the same limited perspective as the characters. The game therefore explores discovery and survival instead of presenting a world-spanning chronology from every faction’s point of view.

Where E-Day sits in the Gears timeline
Fourteen years before the original game
The confirmed placement is relative: E-Day occurs 14 years before the original Gears of War. Official Xbox material does not provide a complete, numbered chronology of every campaign event, so that figure should be treated as the reliable anchor rather than as an invitation to assign dates to scenes that have not been dated publicly.
In practical terms, the game shows the generation of Marcus and Dom before they become the fully established partners seen in the original title. Their military careers have already begun, but the defining Locust war has not. The contrast is important: the original game presents a hardened fight against a known enemy, while E-Day presents the first shock of an attack whose scale and origin are still mysteries.
The immediate three-day campaign
Xbox Wire’s 2026 launch guide describes the playable events as unfolding across three days and nights in Kalona. This is the timeframe for the immediate campaign, not a claim that the entire history of Emergence Day or every consequence of the invasion is contained within 72 hours. Kalona gives the story a specific urban setting in which the squad must keep moving, interpret new threats, and make decisions while communications and assumptions break down.
What players should not infer
The available official descriptions establish the relative placement and the Kalona campaign window, but they do not publish a mission-by-mission chronology or a complete list of continuity references. It is therefore safer to describe E-Day as the origin account of the Locust conflict and of Marcus and Dom’s bond than to claim it resolves every unanswered historical detail in the franchise.
What Emergence Day means in the story
Emergence Day is more than a label for the opening attack. It is the point at which ordinary military expectations fail. The Locust are not an enemy the surface population has spent years studying; they are “monsters under the bed” made real. Matt Searcy, discussing the game’s creative direction in an Xbox Wire interview, summarized the design goal this way:
“The design brief was pretty simple,” explains Searcy. “Locust are the ‘monsters under the bed.’ What would happen to the people of Sera in seeing this overwhelming army of monsters and trying to figure out…what are you going to do?”

That framing explains why the campaign emphasizes uncertainty. Marcus and Dom are trained soldiers, yet training for a conventional human war does not automatically explain enemies emerging from below, unfamiliar battlefield conditions, or the speed of the assault. The horror comes from the gap between what the squad knows and what it must confront immediately.

Pendulum Wars veterans
Before the Locust appear, Marcus and Dom have already fought in the Pendulum Wars, the human conflict that predates the main Gears storyline. They are therefore not inexperienced recruits on their first deployment. Their experience gives them practical combat skills, but it does not give them prior knowledge of the Horde.
Grief connects them
Their relationship is also earlier and less settled than the friendship familiar from later games. Dom’s older brother, Carlos Santiago, was Marcus’s close friend and died in combat. Marcus and Dom are grieving Carlos, and that shared loss shapes how they begin working together. The bond is developing under pressure rather than being presented as an already perfected partnership.
Searcy described the creative purpose directly: “We’re telling the origin story of Marcus and Dom and their bond… this is the bond that defines the franchise.” The wording matters because the game is not simply showing younger versions of two established heroes. It is showing why their connection becomes central to the series.
How E-Day connects to the rest of the series
It is a mainline entry, not a spin-off
Xbox Wire identifies E-Day as a mainline Gears entry. Its earlier setting changes the order in which the player encounters events, but not its status within the franchise. The game is designed to add context that resonates through later stories rather than to sit outside them as an unrelated experiment.
It enriches the original Gears of War
Playing the prequel first or later changes the emphasis of the original game. The original presents Marcus and Dom as soldiers already operating within a desperate Locust war. E-Day supplies the missing emotional and historical background: the first sight of the Horde, the shock of the invasion, and the personal circumstances that bring Marcus and Dom together.

The relationship between the two games is therefore complementary. E-Day explains the beginning of a bond and a conflict; the original shows that bond and conflict after years of consequences. Neither description requires treating the prequel as a replacement for the original campaign.
It does not erase Gears 4 or Gears 5
The developers have explicitly said that telling this earlier story does not mean abandoning the narratives introduced in Gears 4 and Gears 5. Those later storylines remain part of the series’ direction. The prequel can answer questions about the franchise’s past while the newer games continue to define its future.
This is the safest way to understand the continuity: E-Day adds a foundation beneath the existing saga. It does not reset the timeline, declare the later games non-canon, or promise that every plot thread from those games will be resolved in the prequel.
Chronological comparison with other Gears entries
| Entry | Chronological position | Locust knowledge at the start | Marcus and Dom’s relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day | 14 years before the original Gears of War | The Horde is emerging for the first time; the squad is learning what the threat is while fighting it. | They are Pendulum Wars veterans connected by grief over Carlos Santiago, but their defining partnership is still forming. |
| Gears of War | The reference point that follows E-Day by 14 years | The Locust war is an established conflict rather than a first encounter. | The friendship seen here has the history and familiarity that E-Day depicts in formation. |
| Gears 4 and Gears 5 | Later than the original series events | Their stories deal with consequences and developments after the earlier Locust-era events. | They belong to the later direction of the franchise, which the developers say remains intact alongside the prequel. |
The table shows why “prequel” is the useful word. The comparison is about sequence and character history, not about ranking one campaign above another or replacing the later arc.

The story remains with Bravo Squad instead of cutting between distant locations. That choice has two effects. First, it keeps the emotional focus on Marcus, Dom, and the soldiers beside them. Second, it preserves the mystery of the invasion: if the squad does not know what lies beneath Sera or how large the attack is, the player does not receive an all-knowing explanation from another viewpoint.
This limited perspective also helps distinguish E-Day from a broad historical documentary about the war. The game is about what a small unit can see, hear, infer, and survive during the first three days and nights in Kalona. Events outside that viewpoint may matter to the wider canon, but the published premise does not claim to show every front of the invasion.

Release and play options
As listed on Xbox’s official product page on October 13, 2026, Gears of War: E-Day released on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and Windows. The page lists Game Pass availability, a solo campaign, two-player split-screen on console, online cooperative play for up to four players, Horde Siege, and Versus.

Those modes affect how the game can be played, but they do not alter its story placement. The solo campaign is the clearest option for following the origin narrative in sequence. Cooperative modes let additional players participate in the combat experience; the official listing does not turn them into separate timelines or alternate canon.
The same product listing includes a Premium Edition with the game and additional digital content. Edition contents and availability can change by region and over time, so check the live Xbox listing for the market and platform you use rather than assuming every edition contains the same items.
The themed controller
Xbox also advertises a limited-edition Gears of War: E-Day Xbox Wireless Controller. It is an optional themed accessory for players or collectors, not a requirement for the game, and the product page does not establish retailer inventory or a universal price.
Should you play E-Day before the original?
If you prefer chronological storytelling
Start with E-Day if you want to see the Locust’s first emergence and the beginning of Marcus and Dom’s bond before moving to the original game. The 14-year placement gives you a clear chronological entry point.
If you want the series’ original introduction
Start with the original Gears of War if you prefer to encounter the setting as longtime players did: with the Locust already established as a terrifying enemy and Marcus and Dom already functioning as a recognizable team. Then use E-Day as background that deepens those characters and events.
If you are following the modern arc
You do not need to discard Gears 4 or Gears 5 to make room for the prequel. The developers’ stated position is that the later storylines remain in place. Choose your order based on whether you value chronological history, original release perspective, or the continuation of the newer narrative.
