Fusion is the process of joining light atomic nuclei under extreme heat and pressure, releasing energy from the small amount of mass that disappears in the reaction. It powers the Sun. Helion Energy entered a wider public conversation when a 2026 Jeopardy! clue prompted contestant Greg Monson to answer, “What is fusion?” The television moment explains the term; it does not mean a commercial fusion power plant is already supplying the grid.
What is nuclear fusion?
In fusion, two light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus. The final products contain slightly less mass than the original nuclei. Einstein’s mass–energy relationship means that missing mass becomes released energy. Stars use gravity to provide the pressure and temperature needed for this process; an engineered reactor must create and control comparable plasma conditions by other means.
Helion describes its fuel concept as using hydrogen and helium isotopes. The exact fuel cycle matters because different reactions produce different amounts of energy, radiation and engineering challenges.
How does fusion work in a reactor?
Creating a plasma
At the temperatures required for fusion, fuel becomes plasma—a gas in which electrons are separated from atomic nuclei. The reactor must heat and confine that electrically charged plasma long enough, and at high enough density, for nuclei to collide and fuse. Losing confinement allows the plasma to cool and the reaction to stop.

Turning the reaction into electricity
Many fusion designs plan to capture the reaction’s heat, use it to make steam, and drive a turbine. Helion says its proposed system takes a different route: rapidly changing magnetic fields create pulsed plasma, and the plasma’s movement induces an electrical current that can be recovered directly. Helion compares the idea with regenerative braking in an electric car. This is a company description of the intended energy-recovery method, not evidence that commercial grid output has been demonstrated.
Fusion versus fission
Fusion and fission are both nuclear reactions, but they work in opposite ways. Fusion joins light nuclei; fission splits a heavy nucleus. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission describes them as fundamentally different reactions, with different hazards and regulatory considerations.

“Fusion has no chain reaction” does not mean every fusion design is neutron-free. Helion’s FAQ says its deuterium–helium-3 approach can produce neutrons through deuterium–deuterium and some deuterium–tritium side reactions. Fuel choice therefore affects shielding, component damage, waste handling and licensing.

What Helion Energy is trying to build
A pulsed, non-ignition machine
Helion characterizes its approach as pulsed and non-ignition. Rather than maintaining a continuously burning plasma, the machine is intended to form and compress plasma in repeated pulses, then recover electricity as the plasma expands and its magnetic field changes. “Non-ignition” means the plasma is not expected to sustain itself without continued input from the machine.

Polaris and earlier milestones
Helion’s public materials identify Polaris as a prototype intended to demonstrate electricity production. The company also reports that an earlier device reached a plasma temperature of 150 million degrees Celsius. Those statements describe prototypes and milestones, not an operating commercial power station.
The cited public information does not establish commercial grid operation or independently verified commercial output. Any deployment schedule, output figure or future plant date should therefore be read as a target or plan unless separately demonstrated.

Why fusion appeared on Jeopardy!
GeekWire reported that three-day champion Greg Monson, a videographer from Portland, Oregon, buzzed in first with the correct response, “What is fusion?” The clue connected a highly technical energy subject with a familiar general-knowledge television format and gave Helion an unusual mainstream mention.

The clue’s answer is scientifically straightforward: fusion is the joining of light nuclei and the associated release of energy. The broadcast did not constitute a technical validation of Helion’s machine, its schedule or the readiness of fusion power for the grid.

What is established—and what remains unresolved?
- Established science: fusion reactions release energy because the products have slightly less mass than the starting nuclei.
- Helion’s stated design: a pulsed, non-ignition system that seeks direct electrical recovery from moving charged plasma.
- Public demonstration status: Polaris and the reported 150-million-degree milestone are prototype evidence, not proof of commercial generation.
- Neutron question: Helion’s deuterium–helium-3 concept is not completely neutron-free because side reactions can produce neutrons.
- Regulation: U.S. fusion oversight follows a pathway distinct from fission regulation, according to the NRC.
How to evaluate fusion claims
- Identify the fuel cycle. Ask which isotopes react and whether side reactions generate neutrons.
- Check the operating mode. Distinguish pulsed systems from steady-state concepts; the engineering constraints and power-delivery pattern differ.
- Follow the energy path. Determine whether a proposal converts heat through a turbine or seeks direct electrical recovery, as Helion does.
- Separate milestones from electricity sales. A high plasma temperature or prototype pulse is not the same as net, reliable power delivered to a grid.
- Read the regulatory claim precisely. A distinct fusion framework does not remove the need to address radiation, materials, worker protection and plant safety.
