Forward enterprise value-to-EBITDA (forward EV/EBITDA) is a valuation multiple that divides a company’s enterprise value on a specified date by its forecast EBITDA for a stated future period. The denominator is usually next-twelve-months (NTM) EBITDA or the next fiscal year’s estimate. A complete answer must identify the valuation date, forecast horizon, EBITDA definition and forecast source.
In formula form: Forward EV/EBITDA = enterprise value at the valuation date ÷ forecast EBITDA for the selected future period. The result is expressed as a multiple, such as 8.5x or 12.8x. It is a comparison tool, not proof that a company is cheap or expensive by itself.
What the multiple measures
Enterprise value (EV) is a measure of the value of the operating business available to all major capital providers, not just common shareholders. In a simplified calculation, EV equals equity value plus debt minus cash. Depending on the company and the earnings scope, the calculation may also need preferred equity, noncontrolling interests and other material claims. The CFA Institute’s explanation of enterprise-value multiples describes EV as the market value of debt, common equity and preferred equity, less cash and investments. Aswath Damodaran’s valuation chapter presents the common equity-plus-debt-minus-cash formulation.

EBITDA means earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. For a forward multiple, EBITDA is not the amount the company reported in its last annual or quarterly filing; it is an estimate for a future period. Analysts may use a company’s guidance, a consensus estimate, an internal model or another clearly identified forecast. The estimate may be reported EBITDA or an adjusted version, so that basis must be disclosed.

The time period is essential. “Forward” without a horizon is incomplete. A multiple based on NTM EBITDA is not automatically the same as one based on the next completed fiscal year, especially when a company has strong seasonality or a fiscal year that is about to end. Grant Thornton Austria labels its forward chart as NTM EV/EBITDA and dates the chart 31 August 2026; its sector values are time-sensitive rather than permanent benchmarks.
How to calculate forward EV/EBITDA
- Set the valuation date. Record the date on which you measure market capitalization, debt, cash and other claims. Market values and analyst estimates can change daily, so the date anchors the numerator and the forecast information available at that time.
- Obtain equity value. For a listed company, use the share price on that date multiplied by the relevant diluted share count, or use a market-capitalization figure that states its share-count convention. Keep currency and consolidation scope consistent with the financial statements used for EBITDA.
- Build enterprise value. Start with equity value, add interest-bearing debt and other material claims that belong in the enterprise-value definition, then subtract cash and investments that are treated as non-operating assets. A simplified expression is EV = equity value + debt − cash. Include preferred equity and noncontrolling interests when they are material and when the EBITDA figure includes the related operations.
- Select a future EBITDA estimate. State whether the denominator is NTM EBITDA, the next fiscal year, a calendar year or another period. Identify whether the number is management guidance, analyst consensus or your own model, and whether it is reported or adjusted EBITDA.
- Divide EV by forecast EBITDA. Express the result with an “x” suffix. Keep the numerator and denominator aligned by valuation date, currency, accounting scope and adjustment policy.
For a reproducible calculation, preserve the underlying inputs in a worksheet rather than recording only the final multiple. A vendor screen can hide differences in debt, cash, share counts or EBITDA adjustments; the CFA Institute cautions that screens may not give users control over how important inputs are calculated.
Worked numerical example
Corporate Finance Institute (CFI) publishes an educational example using market capitalization of $69.3 billion on 1 March 2018, debt of $1.4 billion, cash of $0.3 billion, reported 2017 EBITDA of $5.04 billion and consensus 2018 EBITDA of $5.5 billion. The enterprise value is:

Using the forecast 2018 EBITDA, the forward multiple is:
$70.4 billion ÷ $5.5 billion = 12.8x.
The CFI example was published in 2018 and uses illustrative historical inputs; 12.8x is not a current market statistic or a universal fair-value threshold.
Choosing the denominator: NTM, fiscal year or another period
Next-twelve-months EBITDA
NTM EBITDA covers the coming 12 months from the valuation date. It normally combines the remaining portion of the current fiscal year with the corresponding portion of the next fiscal year. This convention is useful when comparing companies with different fiscal year-ends, but you must know how the estimate was constructed and its “as of” date.

Next fiscal year EBITDA
A next-fiscal-year estimate uses the company’s upcoming reported fiscal year. It is easy to communicate, but its length and timing can differ across companies. Near a year-end, a next-fiscal-year multiple can look materially different from an NTM multiple because the forecast window shifts.

Company guidance, consensus and adjusted EBITDA
Management guidance may be a range rather than a point estimate. Consensus EBITDA is an aggregation of analysts’ estimates and can change after earnings releases. Adjusted EBITDA may exclude restructuring, stock compensation, acquisition costs or other items according to a company- or analyst-defined policy. Do not mix an adjusted denominator with an unadjusted peer multiple without explaining the difference.

Why enterprise value is broader than market capitalization
Market capitalization measures the market value attributable to common equity. EV adds claims that have priority over, or share in the value of, the operating business. Debt is added because lenders have a claim on the enterprise. Cash is generally subtracted because it is an asset already included in the value of the business but the income earned on that cash is not included in EBITDA. Preferred equity and noncontrolling interests may need to be added when they represent claims or ownership interests reflected in the operations included in EBITDA.
Scope mismatches create misleading results. If EV includes an investment or cross-holding whose operating earnings are absent from the EBITDA denominator, the ratio can be overstated. Conversely, consolidated EBITDA may include subsidiaries whose earnings do not correspond to the ownership represented in the equity value. Review the company’s balance sheet, notes and consolidation policy when these items are material.
How to interpret the result
Read the number as a claim on forecast operating earnings
A 10x forward EV/EBITDA multiple means the enterprise value equals ten times the selected period’s forecast EBITDA. It does not mean investors will receive ten years of EBITDA as cash, nor does it provide a payback period. EBITDA excludes interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization; it also does not deduct capital expenditure, working-capital investment, lease obligations or debt principal.

Forward versus trailing multiples
A forward multiple can be lower than a trailing multiple when EBITDA is expected to grow. The reverse occurs when forecast EBITDA is expected to decline. CFI emphasizes that periods must line up when comparing businesses. A trailing multiple for one company beside an NTM multiple for another can reflect the timing difference rather than a true valuation gap.
Compare operating economics, not just the quotient
A meaningful peer comparison uses companies with broadly similar economics. Consider:
- Expected revenue and EBITDA growth;
- Operating margins and margin stability;
- Capital intensity and recurring capital expenditure;
- Working-capital requirements and cash conversion;
- Financial leverage, refinancing risk and other claims;
- Business, geographic and regulatory risk;
- Accounting policies and EBITDA adjustments; and
- Currency, fiscal-year timing and consolidation scope.
A higher multiple can be rational for a faster-growing, higher-margin or less capital-intensive business. A low multiple can reflect weak growth, heavy reinvestment needs, cyclicality, leverage or an optimistic denominator.

Important limitations and common mistakes
Treating a low multiple as a buy signal
There is no universal “cheap” EV/EBITDA number. Multiples vary by sector, business model, interest-rate environment, growth outlook and estimate quality. A low result deserves investigation rather than an automatic purchase decision.

Using EBITDA as if it were free cash flow
Depreciation and amortization may approximate the consumption of assets that must eventually be replaced, while capital expenditure and working capital can absorb substantial cash. Two companies with the same forward EV/EBITDA can therefore produce very different cash returns to investors.
Mixing reported and adjusted figures
Removing recurring costs from one company’s EBITDA while leaving them in a peer’s figure makes the comparison asymmetric. List every material adjustment and apply the same policy across the peer set.
Ignoring negative or very small EBITDA
If forecast EBITDA is zero or negative, the ratio is not economically meaningful or may be undefined. Use a different valuation approach, such as revenue, gross profit or a cash-flow method, while explaining why EV/EBITDA cannot answer the question for that company.
Overlooking seasonality and cyclicality
A short-term forecast can be unusually high or low at a cycle peak or trough. Examine a normalized forecast and the range of plausible outcomes instead of relying on one point estimate.
Assuming all cash is interchangeable
Restricted cash, trapped cash, minimum operating balances and foreign cash subject to repatriation limits may not be fully available to all claimants. The subtraction should follow the valuation convention used for the company and its peers.
A practical calculation checklist
- Write the valuation date at the top of the worksheet.
- Record share price, diluted shares and equity value in one currency.
- List debt, preferred equity, noncontrolling interests and other material claims separately.
- List cash and investments separately, noting restrictions or non-operating treatment.
- Compute EV and retain the arithmetic rather than copying a screen’s headline number.
- Label the denominator NTM, next fiscal year or another exact period.
- Identify the forecast source, retrieval date and reported-versus-adjusted basis.
- Confirm that EBITDA and EV cover the same consolidated operations.
- Compare only with peers whose growth, margins, capital intensity and risk are reasonably similar.
- Read the result alongside capital-expenditure, working-capital, leverage and cash-flow analysis.
Further technical context
Damodaran discusses EV/EBITDA as a way to value companies when conventional earnings are unavailable or distorted. In his article “The Educated Investor,” he attributes the line, “But when there are no earnings, you have to get at their value somehow,” to T.C. Robillard, identified there as an analyst at Salomon Smith Barney. The point is not that EBITDA solves every valuation problem; it is that an enterprise-value multiple can provide a common frame when interest expense, tax rates or depreciation policies make net earnings difficult to compare.
For a detailed treatment of the multiple’s construction and limitations, see Damodaran’s EV-to-EBITDA valuation chapter, the “The Educated Investor” discussion, and the CFA Institute’s market-based valuation refresher.
