Fear of the number 13 is commonly called triskaidekaphobia. The word names a fear, but it does not by itself mean someone has a mental health disorder.
What is the fear of the number 13 called?
Cambridge Dictionary defines triskaidekaphobia as the superstition that the number 13 is unlucky. The word combines Greek elements meaning “thirteen” and “fear.” Cambridge gives the US pronunciation as /ˌtrɪs.kaɪˌdek.əˈfoʊ.bi.ə/ and the UK pronunciation as /ˌtrɪs.kaɪˌdek.əˈfəʊ.bi.ə/.
Is fear of 13 a phobia or a diagnosis?
Not necessarily. Someone may avoid 13 because of a superstition or cultural belief without experiencing a mental health disorder. Cleveland Clinic discusses fear of a specific number as something that may be connected with religious belief or superstition; it also notes that arithmophobia, or extreme fear of numbers, is not a diagnosis listed in DSM-5. Relevant areas can include how intense the fear or anxiety is, physical reactions, feared consequences, avoidance, and whether the person leaves situations or changes daily activities to cope. These are assessment considerations, not a self-diagnosis checklist.

The American Psychiatric Association’s Severity Measure for Specific Phobia—Adult includes prompts such as whether a person “felt moments of sudden terror, fear, or fright,” “felt anxious, worried, or nervous,” or “avoided, or did not approach or enter” feared situations. The measure is intended to support clinical decision-making; the APA cautions that its measures should not be used alone to make a diagnosis. The DSM describes and classifies disorders for assessment and diagnosis; it does not provide treatment guidelines. The APA explains the DSM’s purpose here. If fear of 13 causes persistent distress or interferes with daily life, a person may choose to discuss it with a qualified mental health professional. Ordinary superstition alone does not make that step necessary.

Why do some people consider 13 unlucky?
There is no single definitive origin established for the superstition in the sources cited here. Cleveland Clinic describes cultural associations people commonly cite: in a Christian tradition, Judas is said to have been the thirteenth guest at the Last Supper; in Norse mythology, Loki is described as the thirteenth god to arrive at a gathering. These are explanations people associate with the belief, not proof of one historical source or of any danger from the number.

Cleveland Clinic psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD, observes that “Our brains are wired to recognize patterns and develop them.” That general observation can help explain how people connect events and beliefs, but it is not a specific research finding about triskaidekaphobia. How is fear of 13 different from fear of Friday the 13th?
Triskaidekaphobia refers to fear of the number 13. Fear focused specifically on Friday the 13th is more narrowly called paraskevidekatriaphobia, a term Cleveland Clinic uses for that date-related fear. Cleveland Clinic’s number-fear overview discusses both terms.
