Electronic design automation (EDA) is the use of software, computing resources, and engineering methods to design, analyze, simulate, verify, and prepare electronic systems for manufacture. It is a broad discipline and toolchain—not a single program—used especially for integrated circuits (ICs), as well as printed circuit boards (PCBs), chip packages, and wider electronic systems.
What does electronic design automation mean?
EDA combines engineering workflows with specialized software that helps turn an electronic design idea into a design that can be checked and manufactured. The term can refer both to the tools themselves and to the organized process in which engineers use them. The scope spans the design, analysis, verification, and implementation of electronic systems, as described by Synopsys, IEEE Technology Navigator, and Siemens.
- IC: An electronic circuit implemented on a chip.
- PCB: A board that mechanically supports and electrically connects electronic components.
- HDL: A hardware description language, such as Verilog or VHDL, used to describe digital hardware.
What does EDA software do?
EDA tools support different parts of the engineering process. Depending on the design, they can help engineers enter a design, simulate its behavior, translate descriptions into an implementation, check for errors, arrange components, route connections, and prepare design data for manufacturing. These stages are common in many flows, but their order and boundaries vary by project and team.

A typical digital IC flow moves from a description of the circuit’s intended behavior toward a physical layout. It is one example of EDA, not a definition of the entire field.
#1 Best Overall
- Describe the design. Engineers specify intended hardware behavior, often using an HDL such as Verilog or VHDL.
- Simulate and analyze. Simulations and other analyses help assess behavior and identify problems during development.
- Synthesize the design. Synthesis transforms a higher-level hardware description into a lower-level implementation representation, such as a gate-level design.
- Verify the design. Verification checks whether the design behaves as intended. Checks may be used at different points in the flow.
- Implement the physical design. Place-and-route tools determine where circuit elements go and how their connections are routed.
- Run manufacturing-oriented checks. Further checks help prepare the design for fabrication.
Does EDA only apply to chip design?
No. IC design is a major area of EDA, but the field also covers PCB design, IC packaging, and broader electronic systems. The tools and workflow depend on the design target and circuit type. For example, digital chip design, analog or mixed-signal design, and PCB work do not all follow the same sequence or use the same kinds of tools. Siemens describes EDA across ICs, packaging, and PCBs; Synopsys and IEEE Technology Navigator describe the broader design-tool and methodology scope.

EDA is a category of tools and the workflow connecting them. A project may use separate tools for design entry, simulation, synthesis, verification, physical implementation, and manufacturing preparation. The mix depends on what is being designed; the digital IC sequence above should not be treated as a universal workflow for analog, mixed-signal, PCB, or other electronic-system work.
