Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is Epic’s anti-cheat service, and Fortnite requires it. Linux support for EAC has existed since 2021 for developers who explicitly enable it, including games running through Wine or Proton. Fortnite remained blocked because Epic said the older Linux implementation could not provide Windows-level protection, and Fortnite had not opted in. On October 14, 2026, Epic announced EAC Linux v2, a redesigned system that will be piloted in Fortnite. The pilot is planned for later in 2026, but there is no firm release date and no commitment that it will work on Steam Deck.

What Easy Anti-Cheat does

Easy Anti-Cheat is an integrity and cheat-detection system made by Epic Online Services. A game integrates EAC so it can check the game process and the surrounding operating-system environment while the game is running. The purpose is to identify unauthorized code, tampering, exploit tools and other techniques that give one player an unfair advantage.

Fortnite treats EAC as a required component rather than an optional download. Epic’s Fortnite security description from February 27, 2025, says its Windows protection combines EAC’s kernel driver with exploit prevention, code hardening, statistical analysis and machine-learning systems. Epic also says Fortnite bans are based on technical evidence. For some tournaments, Windows players have had to enable Secure Boot and TPM features as an additional integrity check.

That Windows design matters when considering Linux. An anti-cheat service is not simply a collection of files that can be copied into a Proton prefix. The game, Epic’s backend, the operating system and the security checks all have to agree that the environment is supported.

Why Fortnite could not be played on Linux

Linux support was available, but every game had to opt in

Epic says EAC has supported native Linux game clients since 2014. On September 23, 2021, Epic extended support to Windows game builds running on Linux through Wine or Proton. Developers could activate that capability through the Epic Online Services Developer Portal.

The important limitation was per-game enrollment. The 2021 announcement did not make every EAC-protected game compatible automatically. Each developer had to enable Linux, Wine or Proton support for its own title and test the result. A game could therefore use EAC on Windows while refusing to start on Linux, even when another EAC game worked through Proton.

Epic judged the older Linux path less protective

In its October 14, 2026 explanation, Epic said the existing Linux implementation offered less protection than the Windows implementation. Many developers therefore did not opt in. Epic specifically identified that protection gap as the reason Fortnite had not been made available on Linux.

Fortnite’s Windows model includes a kernel driver and several additional detection layers. The older Linux path could not match that level of operating-system visibility and integrity assurance. Epic chose not to enable Fortnite rather than accept a platform on which competitive players could receive weaker protection.

Installing EAC files cannot change the game’s policy

Manually installing an EAC runtime, copying files into a game directory or changing a Proton launch option does not establish official Fortnite support. The game must be enabled by Epic, and the Linux environment must pass the checks required by the enabled implementation. Until those conditions change, a generic Proton setup remains insufficient.

Easy Anti-Cheat and Fortnite: the relevant timeline

Date What changed What it meant for Linux players
2014 Epic says EAC began supporting native Linux game clients. Linux support existed for games that used the native integration.
September 23, 2021 Epic added EAC support for Windows game builds running through Wine or Proton. Activation was offered through the Epic Online Services Developer Portal. Proton compatibility became possible, but only when each game opted in.
February 27, 2025 Epic described Fortnite’s Windows stack: EAC’s kernel driver, exploit prevention, code hardening, statistical analysis and machine learning. Some tournaments required TPM and Secure Boot. Fortnite’s protection requirements remained closely tied to Windows security features.
October 14, 2026 Epic announced EAC Linux v2 and said Fortnite would be its first live pilot. Linux support is planned, but there is no firm public launch date or Steam Deck commitment.

Does EAC work with Proton?

Yes, for games whose developers have enabled it. Proton provides a compatibility layer that lets many Windows games run on Linux. EAC can be integrated into that arrangement, but the game publisher must activate the relevant option and configure the title’s servers and launcher to accept Proton clients.

This is why reports that “EAC works on Proton” and reports that “Fortnite is blocked” are both accurate. They refer to different games and different enrollment decisions. Proton itself cannot authorize a title that its developer has not enabled.

  • An EAC game may work on one Linux distribution and fail on another if their security configurations differ.
  • A Proton update can improve compatibility, but it cannot substitute for Epic enabling Fortnite.
  • A successful launch for another EAC-protected game is not evidence that Fortnite is supported.
  • Community launch scripts and compatibility tweaks are unofficial unless Epic changes Fortnite’s supported-platform status.

What EAC Linux v2 is designed to change

Epic’s October 14, 2026 announcement describes EAC Linux v2 as a new security model rather than a Linux copy of the Windows kernel driver. The announced design relies on protections already provided by the Linux platform, with an anti-cheat service and eBPF logic active during protected gameplay.

Announced component Role in the design
Signed kernels and signed modules Helps establish that core operating-system code and loadable modules come from trusted sources.
TPM 2.0 Provides hardware-backed measurements and key operations used to establish platform trust.
Secure Boot Verifies boot components against trusted signing keys before the operating system starts.
Measured boot Records boot-state measurements so later software can evaluate how the machine started.
IOMMU Helps control and isolate direct memory access by devices.
Kernel lockdown integrity mode Restricts operations that could undermine the integrity of the running kernel.
Disabled kexec Prevents replacing the running kernel through a mechanism that could bypass the established boot trust chain.
BPF Linux Security Module Allows eBPF-based security policies and monitoring to participate in integrity checks.
Anti-cheat systemd service Runs only while a protected game is active, according to Epic’s description.
eBPF programs Provide runtime security logic without installing an equivalent anti-cheat kernel module.

It will not install an anti-cheat kernel module

Epic explicitly says EAC Linux v2 does not install or load an anti-cheat kernel module. Instead, it uses existing Linux kernel security features together with the temporary systemd service and eBPF programs. That distinction may matter to users who avoid third-party kernel modules, but it does not mean the requirements are lightweight: the system still depends on a trusted boot chain and several kernel and hardware capabilities.

Fortnite is the planned first pilot

Epic says it plans to pilot EAC Linux v2 in Fortnite first, test it in a live environment and refine the implementation based on what it learns. After the pilot, Epic may make the implementation available to more developers. “Planned” is not the same as released: the announcement gives no firm public date, and it does not state that every distribution or device will qualify.

Is Fortnite coming to Linux?

Epic’s current answer is yes in principle: Fortnite is the planned first EAC Linux v2 pilot. The announcement says the pilot is planned for later in 2026. As of October 15, 2026, Epic has not published a firm launch date, a supported-distribution list, minimum kernel versions or a final user installation procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the pilot arrives, Fortnite will still need to be officially enabled on Epic’s side. Players should expect the game launcher, EAC service and backend to reject systems that fail the required checks. A distribution that can run Proton games today may therefore need changes to Secure Boot keys, kernel configuration or hardware settings before it qualifies.

Can Fortnite run on Steam Deck?

There is no current Steam Deck promise. Epic’s EAC Linux v2 FAQ says Steam Deck does not currently support the required features, while Epic and Valve are discussing the issue. The 2021 Proton announcement should not be read as Steam Deck approval; it only established that developers could opt individual games into Wine or Proton support.

The Deck question depends on the final implementation, not just on whether the game runs under Proton. Epic’s announced compatibility axes include Secure Boot and trusted-key support, TPM 2.0, measured boot, IOMMU, kernel-lockdown configuration, BPF LSM availability and the ability to enforce the required boot and kernel policies. Until Epic and Valve publish a supported configuration, installing a different Proton version is not an official solution.

What Linux players should do now

Use official support status as the first check

  1. Check Epic’s Fortnite and Easy Anti-Cheat announcements for an explicit Linux or Proton enablement statement.
  2. Confirm whether the announcement names your device class, distribution family or Steam Deck. Do not infer support from another EAC game.
  3. Read the stated hardware and boot requirements before changing your system. The EAC Linux v2 design may require firmware settings that are disabled by default.
  4. Install only the launcher, EAC component and game build specified by Epic once official instructions exist.
  5. If the game fails an integrity check, record the exact error and compare it with Epic’s documented requirements instead of trying random launch options.

What not to treat as proof of compatibility

  • A manually installed EAC runtime.
  • A Proton prefix copied from another game.
  • A community patch that bypasses a launcher or changes anti-cheat behavior.
  • A video showing an older build starting offline.
  • A successful login before Epic enables the server-side checks for Linux.

Epic’s current Fortnite EAC installation guidance documents Windows 10 and Windows 11 procedures. That is evidence of the currently supported desktop path, not a Linux workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility checklist for the EAC Linux v2 pilot

When Epic publishes final requirements, these are the technical questions that will determine whether a Linux installation qualifies:

  • Secure Boot: Can the machine boot with Secure Boot enabled, and does its firmware trust the keys used to sign the distribution’s kernel and modules?
  • TPM 2.0: Is a TPM 2.0 device present, enabled in firmware and usable by the operating system?
  • Measured boot: Can the platform record the boot measurements needed for later integrity checks?
  • IOMMU: Is IOMMU available and configured in a way accepted by the game’s checks?
  • Kernel lockdown: Can the distribution run the required integrity mode without local configuration disabling it?
  • BPF LSM: Does the kernel provide the BPF-based Linux Security Module functionality used by the implementation?
  • Signed components: Are the running kernel and loadable modules signed and trusted?
  • kexec policy: Is the kernel replacement path disabled as required?
  • Official enrollment: Has Epic opted Fortnite into Linux support on the server and launcher side?
  • Device approval: Is the specific hardware, including Steam Deck if relevant, covered by Epic’s published support statement?

What remains unknown

Epic has not stated the final release date, supported distributions, minimum kernel release, performance impact, troubleshooting workflow or whether the pilot will launch simultaneously across desktop Linux devices. It has also not promised Steam Deck compatibility. Those details can change during the live pilot, so Linux users should treat unofficial claims as provisional.

The central answer is therefore precise: EAC already works with some Linux and Proton games, but Fortnite was blocked because its earlier Linux protection did not meet Epic’s Windows-level standard and Fortnite was not opted in. EAC Linux v2 is Epic’s announced attempt to close that gap, with Fortnite as the planned first pilot. Until Epic activates the game and publishes passing configurations, Fortnite remains unsupported on Linux and Steam Deck.
