Deadlock is Valve’s multiplayer game in early development, built as a mechanical hybrid of a third-person shooter and a lane-based MOBA. You aim and fire weapons, use hero abilities, move and fight at close range, and manage positioning like a shooter. At the same time, lanes, troopers, souls, purchases, ability upgrades and team objectives create the resource and map-control decisions associated with a MOBA.
Valve’s Steam listing currently limits access to friend invites sent through playtesters, lists the release date as “To be announced,” and marks system requirements as still to be determined. Because the game is unfinished, mechanics, heroes, modes and balance can change between updates.
What Deadlock is right now
Valve’s official Steam product page describes the game in one sentence: “Deadlock is a multiplayer game in early development.” That wording matters. Deadlock is playable as a limited test, but it is not a finished, generally available release with a locked roster or final ruleset.
The current access model is invitation-based: people can enter through friend invites from existing playtesters. The store page does not provide a public release date; it says “To be announced.” It also leaves the PC system requirements as not yet determined. Check the live Steam listing before assuming that access, hardware support or release timing has changed.

Steam’s user-defined tags include both “MOBA” and “third-person shooter.” Those labels are not merely marketing categories. The game’s systems combine lane income, waves of troopers, a soul economy, item builds and ability progression with weapon aim, movement, melee timing and positioning.
An unofficial community mechanics reference is useful for explaining the vocabulary below, but it is not a promise that every rule will remain unchanged. In an early-development game, current in-game behavior and Valve’s latest updates take priority.
How the shooter and MOBA layers fit together

The two columns interact continuously. A player who wins an aim duel but misses a valuable wave may gain less long-term power than expected. Conversely, a player who manages a lane well still has to land shots and use abilities effectively when the teams collide.
The Deadlock match loop, step by step
1. Contest lane space with your hero and troopers
Players operate through lanes where their team’s troopers advance and meet enemy pressure. Lane position determines which resources are safe to collect, which angles are available and how quickly a team can threaten the opposing side. Staying too far forward can expose you to a coordinated attack; staying too far back can surrender income and map space.
2. Generate and collect souls
Lanes and other activities generate souls, the resource that supports purchases and hero progression. Souls are not just a score displayed after a fight: they are the budget that determines which tools you can bring into the next engagement. A useful rotation therefore weighs the value of arriving at a fight against the souls and lane position you would abandon.

Do not rely on old beginner guides that present a traditional last-hit gate as the current rule. The community mechanics reference says trooper last hits are no longer required to generate souls and distinguishes a soul picked up from the ground from a contested flying soul orb. Because this system can change during development, verify the behavior in the current build before teaching a detailed farming routine.
3. Spend souls on items and progression
Souls fund item purchases and sit alongside ability unlocks and upgrades. Spending is a decision about the next problem, not an automatic race to the item with the largest damage number. A defensive or utility purchase can be more valuable when the opposing team threatens a particular type of engagement, while an offensive purchase may matter when you can safely convert lane pressure into a fight.
4. Use the new power to take a favorable fight
Items and ability upgrades change what your hero can do, but they do not remove the need for aim, movement or timing. Teams should look for fights in which their current power, lane position and nearby allies give them an advantage. A kill can be useful, yet it is only one possible result: forcing enemies away from a wave, protecting a teammate or preserving a route toward an objective can also be the correct outcome.
5. Convert the advantage into map progress
Winning an encounter matters because it creates time and space to advance. Teams use their combined power and coordination to pressure enemy defenses or contest objectives. The best decision after a fight is often the one that converts the temporary advantage into souls, a safer lane, an objective or another durable form of map control rather than chasing an additional elimination.
What combat feels like
Weapons and aim
Third-person weapon combat makes crosshair placement, target selection and firing position central skills. You must decide whether to keep distance, change angle, disengage or close in. Because the camera gives a broader view than a first-person shooter, movement and sightline management remain important: being visible from several directions can be more dangerous than losing a small amount of damage output.

Hero abilities
Abilities provide each hero’s distinctive tools and are used with weapons rather than replacing them. An ability can create an opening, protect a retreat, control an area or make a weapon attack easier to land. Ability unlocks and upgrades arrive through progression, so the timing of those milestones affects which fights are sensible at each stage of a match.

Movement and positioning
Positioning connects the two genres. Shooter instincts tell you to seek an angle and avoid predictable exposure; MOBA instincts tell you to account for allied waves, enemy rotations and the value of the ground you are giving up. Before committing, ask whether teammates can follow, whether a retreat route exists and what lane or soul income will be lost if the fight lasts.
Melee and parrying
Close-range attacks add a timing layer that is unusual for a conventional lane-based game. The mechanics reference describes parrying a committed melee attack to stun and punish the attacker. That means a melee animation is not automatically a guaranteed hit: reading the opponent’s commitment and responding at the right moment can reverse the exchange. Treat this as a current system description, not a permanent promise while Valve continues to experiment.
Souls, items and ability progression
Souls are both income and tempo
Every soul choice has an opportunity cost. Collecting a safe wave may delay an aggressive rotation; leaving the lane may prevent an enemy from being pressured but could let your teammate reach a fight first. Track not only how many souls you have, but also when you can safely spend them and whether the purchase changes the next contest.
Active and passive items
Items can be active or passive. Passive items alter a hero’s ongoing statistics or behavior, while active items add another button and a timing decision. An active effect is most useful when you can deliberately reserve it for a threat or opening; using it without regard to the next engagement can leave you unable to answer the opponent’s key move.

Imbuing an ability
The mechanics reference also describes items that can be imbued onto an ability. This creates a build choice beyond buying a general statistic: decide which ability is most likely to be used in the situations you expect next. The best target can change when the opposing team changes its positioning or when your own team needs a different initiation, escape or protection tool.
Build for the next fight, not a copied checklist
There is no universally correct purchase sequence established for every hero and matchup. Compare the threats you can actually see: burst damage, sustained pressure, difficulty reaching a target, inability to escape or a need to contest space. Then choose an item or upgrade that addresses that problem and fits the souls you can realistically earn.
How to approach your first matches
- Learn one hero’s basic loop. Understand the weapon, the purpose of each ability and the range at which you are safest before trying to optimize a build.
- Watch the lane before forcing a fight. Note where allied and enemy troopers meet, where souls can be collected and which escape routes remain open.
- Collect resources without standing still. Move between cover, angles and pickups rather than making yourself an easy target while farming.
- Check the shop after meaningful income. Buy with the next engagement in mind; do not wait so long that you enter a fight with unspent power.
- Track progression timing. An ability unlock or upgrade can change the matchup. Communicate when your team is ready to use that new power together.
- Rotate with a reason. Leave a lane when the expected value of helping an ally, contesting an objective or denying an enemy exceeds the souls and position you give up.
- Respect melee commitments. If an opponent commits to a close-range attack, watch for the parry timing described by the current mechanics rather than panic-firing.
- After a win, convert it. Push the safe lane, collect available souls, pressure a defense or secure an objective before chasing a low-value target.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Treating kills as the whole scoreboard
A kill that leaves your lane unattended or your team late to an objective may produce less value than a controlled retreat and resource collection. Judge the decision by the map position and progression it creates.
Copying an old last-hit tutorial
Older explanations may claim that only a trooper’s last hit generates souls. The current reference distinguishes ground pickups and contested flying orbs instead. Check the live game and recent Valve notes before following such instructions.

Damage is only useful if you can reach a target and survive long enough to apply it. Consider active effects, defensive tools, ability imbuements and the opponent’s threats when choosing a purchase.

Arriving alone
Deadlock’s shooter mechanics can make a solo outplay possible, but its MOBA layer rewards coordinated timing. If teammates cannot reach the fight or your lane is exposed, delay the commitment or create a safer angle first.
Assuming a familiar hero or mode is permanent
Valve continues to add, remove and adjust content. A hero shown in one update, a balance value or a special mode should not be treated as a fixed part of the final game.
Development status and changing features
Recent public updates illustrate how quickly the game can change. A Steam community update dated January 30, 2026 included hero-ban and Street Brawl changes. A Steam community page also showed a hero becoming available in-game on October 9, 2026. These dated posts demonstrate active development; they do not establish a final roster, permanent mode list or settled balance.
A September 30, 2026 PC Gamer report described Valve as continuing core-game work while exploring areas such as progression, hero and hideout customization, item changes and alternative modes. Those descriptions are development context, not guarantees that every explored feature will ship.
For accurate access instructions, requirements and release information, use Valve’s current Steam listing and its latest update posts. Treat community mechanics documentation as a helpful explanation that must be rechecked when an update changes the rules.
What is and is not established about hardware and accessories
The official listing currently marks system requirements as not yet determined. There is therefore no reliable published minimum specification to repeat as a requirement. The game is a PC title in a limited playtest, but the available information does not establish that a particular mouse, keyboard, headset or other accessory is necessary or especially suitable. Use the hardware you already support for PC gaming and verify requirements when Valve publishes them.
The simplest accurate definition
Deadlock is best understood as a third-person, weapon-based team game in which MOBA decisions determine when and where your shooter skills matter. You contest lanes and troopers, earn and collect souls, spend them on items and progression, then use the resulting tools, aim, movement, abilities and melee timing to win fights and advance the map. The concept is clear even while the details remain in motion: Valve’s early-development status means today’s access rules and mechanics should never be assumed to be final.
