Deadlock is Valve’s third-person, hero-based multiplayer game built around a MOBA-style match structure. You aim and shoot from behind your chosen hero, use abilities and movement to win fights, accompany allied troopers through lanes, collect souls, buy items, and push toward the enemy base. The result is neither a conventional shooter nor a traditional top-down MOBA: it combines direct gunplay with lane pressure, wave management, character progression, and objective combat.

Deadlock remains in early development. Valve’s Steam listing, checked October 13, 2026, says access is limited to friend invites through playtesters, describes the gameplay as experimental, and lists the release date as to be announced. Rules, heroes, items, maps, and balance can therefore change.

What Deadlock is

Deadlock is easiest to understand as a third-person hero shooter played inside a MOBA-like framework. Your immediate actions are familiar from a shooter: aim at opponents, fire weapons, activate abilities, move through the environment, and coordinate direct attacks against enemy heroes. The larger match asks different questions: Which lane should your team contest? When should you protect or clear a trooper wave? How should you spend the souls you earn? Is it safe to advance toward the next defense, or will the opposing team punish the push?

That combination changes the meaning of a firefight. A duel is not an isolated contest for eliminations. It happens while both teams are trying to move allied units through lanes, secure resources, purchase power, and reach the opposing base. The independent Deadlock Handbook, updated October 9, 2026 and checked against the October 6 patch, describes the format as 6v6. Treat that number as a current-build detail rather than a permanent promise, because Valve is still changing the game.

Valve’s own Steam description calls Deadlock “a multiplayer game in early development.” It also warns that the art is temporary and the gameplay is experimental. Those qualifications matter: the high-level loop is clear, but a guide written for one build can become inaccurate when Valve changes a hero, item, objective, mode, or map.

How a Deadlock match works

The following sequence is the useful mental model for a match. Exact timings, prices, lane counts, and objective order are not treated as fixed because the game is evolving.

  1. Choose a hero. You enter the match as a player-controlled character with a particular weapon set, abilities, movement profile, and tactical identity.
  2. Move into a lane or support a teammate. Lanes are routes across the map where allied and enemy troopers advance toward opposing defenses. Your position helps determine which wave is pressured and which part of the map your team can safely occupy.
  3. Fight around the wave. Shoot enemy heroes, use abilities, and deal with troopers while trying to avoid giving the other team an easy opening. Winning space can make it safer for your own units to advance.
  4. Collect souls. Souls are the match’s progression currency. Lane activity and combat connect immediate actions to longer-term character growth because the souls you collect can be spent on items.
  5. Buy items and adapt. The shop lets you turn accumulated souls into additional power or utility. Spending is a strategic decision: an item that helps you survive, deal damage, move, or answer an opposing hero can be more valuable than simply buying whatever is available first.
  6. Push toward enemy defenses and the base. As your team gains an advantage, you try to escort pressure farther along the lane and attack the structures or objectives protecting the opposing side. The overall goal is to break through and destroy the enemy base.

This is a loop rather than a rigid script. A team may leave a lane to help another fight, retreat to spend souls, defend a threatened route, or wait for a better engagement. The important relationship is that combat, resources, and map progress continually affect one another.

Why lanes matter

Lanes turn fights into territory contests

A lane is more than a corridor leading toward the enemy base. It is the route along which allied and opposing troopers meet, and it is where heroes contest the space needed to move those waves forward. Holding favorable ground can give your team room to attack, collect resources, or pressure defenses. Losing that space can expose your troopers and force your hero to defend instead of advancing.

Because heroes operate alongside wave units, a player must watch both opponents and the lane itself. A technically successful attack can still be a poor decision if it leaves the allied wave unsupported or allows the enemy to advance elsewhere. Conversely, clearing or protecting a wave can create an opportunity even when no hero is eliminated.

Troopers connect personal combat to team progress

Troopers are the advancing units that make lane control visible. They provide the moving front line between your team and enemy defenses. Heroes fight around them, protect them, and use the pressure they create to approach objectives. This is one of the clearest ways Deadlock differs from a round-based shooter in which the main objective resets after each round: the map state is continually being pushed and contested.

Do not assume a fixed lane layout

Valve’s early-development warning means you should not rely on an exact lane count, wave interval, tower arrangement, or objective sequence unless it is confirmed for the build you are playing. The stable idea is that lanes carry troopers toward defenses and the base; the geometry and schedule can be revised.

Souls, items, and the match economy

Souls are the link between what happens in a lane and how your hero develops. Collecting them gives you spending power, while spending them on items lets you tailor the hero to the current match. This creates an economy layered on top of shooting: a player is choosing not only when to fight, but also when to convert a successful moment into an item purchase.

The economy also explains why a retreat can be productive. Returning to shop after collecting enough souls may improve your next engagement more than taking an additional risky fight with unspent resources. Likewise, an unsuccessful skirmish can have consequences beyond a lost duel if it gives the other team safer access to souls and lane pressure.

Current item names, costs, categories, and exact effects should be checked against the live build. The available evidence establishes that souls are collected and spent through an item shop; it does not establish a permanent price list or a final item system.

Is Deadlock a MOBA or a shooter?

It is both, but the two labels describe different layers of the experience. The moment-to-moment layer is a third-person shooter. The match-level layer follows conventions associated with MOBAs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Play layer What you do Why it matters
Third-person shooter Aim, fire weapons, use hero abilities, move through the map, and fight enemy heroes directly. Your accuracy, positioning, timing, and movement affect the outcome of individual engagements.
MOBA-style structure Contest lanes, accompany advancing troopers, attack defenses and objectives, collect souls, buy items, and push toward the enemy base. Resources and territory accumulate into a team-wide race for map progress rather than a series of disconnected firefights.
Hero strategy Choose a character, play around its weapons and abilities, and adapt to the opposing lineup and changing balance. The same lane situation can require different decisions depending on the heroes involved.

Calling Deadlock a “shooter with lanes” is useful for describing its controls but incomplete for describing its win condition. Calling it a “MOBA in third person” captures the economy and objectives but understates how much direct aiming and gunplay matter. The hybrid description is more accurate because neither side is merely decorative.

How heroes fit into the gameplay

Heroes define your tools

Your hero is the character you control throughout the match. Weapons determine how you apply direct pressure, while abilities add options for damage, defense, movement, crowd control, or creating favorable positions. The practical question is not only “Can this hero win a duel?” but also “How does this hero help the lane, the wave, and the team’s next objective?”

A hero who can safely pressure an opponent may help a lane advance. Another may be more valuable when protecting allied troopers, starting a coordinated attack, escaping a bad position, or defending a structure. These are strategic roles in the broad sense, not a guarantee that Valve uses a permanent class system with fixed labels.

Hero choice is part of team strategy

Valve’s update dated January 30, 2026 added hero bans to Standard Mode and Street Brawl. That change demonstrates that hero selection is strategically significant: teams can sometimes deny particular choices rather than simply picking from an unrestricted roster. Valve’s patch notes also include hero-specific balance changes, so a character’s strength, abilities, or preferred items may shift between updates.

What is known about Deadlock’s current status

According to Valve’s Steam listing checked October 13, 2026:

  • Deadlock is a multiplayer game in early development.
  • Access is currently limited to friend invites through Valve’s playtesters.
  • The release date is listed as to be announced.
  • The description characterizes the art as temporary and the gameplay as experimental.

Valve’s Steam Community hub continues to carry announcements, and recent posts include new hero announcements. That ongoing activity is another indication that the roster and content are still changing. The access statement does not establish open availability, a public launch date, or support for a particular platform beyond the Steam listing.

Stable concepts versus changing details

When reading a guide or watching a video, separate the concepts that explain Deadlock from the numbers that belong to one patch.

Reasonably stable mental model Details that may change
Third-person hero combat combined with lanes, troopers, souls, items, defenses, and a base objective. Hero abilities, weapon values, item costs, map geometry, objective rules, wave timing, and balance.
Players choose heroes and coordinate with teammates while contesting space. The roster size, hero bans, available modes, and the strength of particular lineups.
Resources earned during play can be converted into item-based progression. Exactly how souls are awarded, displayed, spent, or limited in a future build.

This distinction prevents two common mistakes. First, a newcomer can learn the lane-and-souls loop without memorizing values that may soon be obsolete. Second, a returning player can recognize that a familiar hero or item may need to be relearned after a patch.

A practical way to think during a match

For a first mental checklist, ask these questions in order:

  • Where is the useful pressure? Identify which lane or objective your team is trying to influence before chasing an isolated opponent.
  • What is the wave doing? Check whether allied troopers are advancing, stalled, or exposed before committing to a fight.
  • What can I gain? A successful engagement should improve territory, safety, souls, or access to an objective; a fight with no follow-up may not justify its risk.
  • When should I spend? Unspent souls represent potential power, but returning to shop also costs time and may concede lane space. Balance the immediate danger against the benefit of an item purchase.
  • What does my hero provide? Use the weapon and abilities to support the team’s current need rather than forcing every situation into the same duel.

These questions are deliberately broader than a build order. They remain useful while Valve experiments with the rules because they focus on the relationship between shooting, lane control, resources, and objectives.

What Deadlock is not yet

Deadlock should not be presented as a finished, stable product with a guaranteed launch schedule. The available official information does not provide a release date, a promise of open access, or a final ruleset. It also does not justify claiming a fixed number of lanes, a definitive hero taxonomy, permanent item prices, or a completed art direction.

The most accurate summary is therefore conditional: Deadlock is an evolving 6v6-format game in the current guide’s description, built around third-person hero shooting and a MOBA-like lane economy. You choose a hero, fight with and around troopers, gather souls, purchase items, contest defenses, and work with teammates to reach the enemy base. The broad structure is clear; the details are still subject to Valve’s updates.
