Dead Space is Electronic Arts’ science-fiction survival-horror video-game series. Its central story follows engineer Isaac Clarke, who arrives on the mining starship USG Ishimura for a repair assignment and finds the vessel in catastrophic trouble. The main numbered games are Dead Space, Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3. You can begin with either the 2008 original or the 2023 remake of the first game, then continue with the numbered sequels.
Dead Space in one sentence
Dead Space turns a routine engineering mission into a fight to survive aboard an isolated mining ship. The series combines a science-fiction setting, a practical technical protagonist and survival-horror tension: Isaac Clarke is not introduced as a soldier arriving to win a battle, but as an engineer sent to restore communications and help with a shipboard emergency.

That setup explains why the first game is such a useful starting point. The ship, the repair assignment and the unfolding crisis establish the setting and the central mystery before the later numbered entries continue Isaac’s story.

Isaac’s assignment
Isaac Clarke is an engineer dispatched to the USG Ishimura, a mining starship, on a repair mission. Electronic Arts’ description of the 2008 game specifically frames his work around restoring communications. A job that should be technical and procedural instead places him inside a vessel whose systems and crew are in catastrophic trouble.
#1 Best Overall
For a beginner, Isaac’s occupation is an important part of the series’ identity. The premise is not simply “a monster appears in space.” It is a maintenance mission in which the person trying to understand and repair the environment must also survive it. That contrast between practical engineering work and an impossible emergency gives the horror its science-fiction shape.
The ship as the central setting
The Ishimura is both the location and the problem to be understood. It is a mining ship, isolated from normal help, and its crisis becomes the first game’s central mystery. The setting lets the story move naturally between repairs, investigation and survival rather than treating those as unrelated activities.
Keeping that premise in mind helps avoid a common misunderstanding: Dead Space is not a collection of unrelated space-horror episodes. The first game establishes a specific ship, a specific assignment and a continuing protagonist. The numbered sequels build from that foundation.

The safe beginner-level description is that Isaac arrives to fix a communications problem and discovers a disaster that turns the assignment into a struggle to stay alive. The details of what caused the crisis and how the story develops are best experienced in the game itself. You do not need later plot information to choose an entry point.
Why Electronic Arts calls it sci-fi survival horror
Electronic Arts describes the 2008 release as an action-horror shooter and the 2023 release as a sci-fi survival-horror remake. Those labels identify the series’ broad design rather than promising a single tone in every scene.
Rank #2
- Science fiction: the story takes place aboard a mining starship and treats engineering, ship systems and communications as part of the premise.
- Horror: the player is placed inside an isolated crisis whose causes are uncertain and whose consequences are dangerous.
- Survival: Isaac’s repair assignment becomes a continuing effort to remain alive while dealing with the ship’s emergency.
- Action: EA’s description of the original also identifies it as an action-horror shooter, so the series is not presented as a purely passive or exploratory horror experience.
These categories are useful when deciding whether the series sounds right for you. Someone looking for a space setting with a defined protagonist and an urgent survival problem will recognize the fit. Someone expecting a non-interactive film, a broad space-opera campaign or a story disconnected from the Ishimura will be looking for something else.
The main games and the order of Isaac’s story
The simplest route is release and numbered order: start with the first game in either its original or remake form, then play Dead Space 2, followed by Dead Space 3. The remake occupies the first game’s place; it is not a fourth numbered entry.

This table describes the main numbered route, not an exhaustive catalogue of every story product connected with the franchise. The official material used for this guide establishes the three numbered games, the original and remake of the first game, and the broad direction of the later entries; it does not establish a complete chronology for spin-offs, comics, films or novels.
Dead Space (2008) versus Dead Space (2023)
The two first-game options share the same basic place in the series, but they are different releases. The 2008 version is the original game. The 2023 version retells that first story as a remake and was designed for a newer generation of players.
| Version | What it is | Release information | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead Space (2008) | The original release and the classic first game. | Released in 2008. | You want to experience the original version as it was released. |
| Dead Space (2023) | A remake of the first game’s story, not Dead Space 4. | Released January 27, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. | You want the modern remake and own one of its confirmed platforms. |
Choose the 2008 original if the original release matters most
The 2008 game is the direct original-release experience. It is the appropriate choice if your priority is seeing the first version of the Ishimura story rather than a later reconstruction of it. This is a preference about version and history, not a claim that it is the only correct entry point.
Rank #3
Choose the 2023 remake if you want the modern retelling
The remake is the practical modern entry for players with a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC who want the first story in its newer form. Electronic Arts announced those platforms and the January 27, 2023 launch date. The remake is still the first-game story, so choosing it does not mean skipping the beginning of Isaac’s arc.
Do you need to play both?
No. A new player can begin with either version. The remake is described by EA as a remake that stays faithful to the original vision while adding improvements, and the development team has also described changes made to fit continuity with the broader universe. That means the releases should not be treated as identical copies, but it also means you do not need both to understand where Isaac’s main story begins.
Where should a beginner start?
Use the following decision process rather than looking for a single mandatory answer.
- Decide whether you want the original or a remake. Select the 2008 release for the original version; select the 2023 release for the modernized retelling.
- Check your hardware. EA confirms the 2023 remake for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The material available for this guide does not establish a current store listing, price or edition availability, so verify those details before purchasing.
- Play one first-game version before moving on. Either version introduces Isaac, the Ishimura and the repair mission that anchors the series.
- Continue with Dead Space 2. It is the next numbered chapter in Isaac’s story.
- Play Dead Space 3 afterward. It is the third numbered entry and follows Isaac with Sergeant John Carver to Tau Volantis.
This route keeps the narrative progression clear without requiring you to resolve every question about the wider franchise before starting.
How the remake fits into the series
It retells the first game
The 2023 release is explicitly a remake of the original Dead Space. Its role is to present the first game’s story again with improvements, not to advance the numbering to a new fourth chapter. If a store page or conversation refers to “the remake,” it is referring to this retelling of the first game.
Rank #4
It aims to preserve the original vision
EA says the remake stays faithful to the original vision while adding improvements. That positioning matters because “remake” does not mean a completely unrelated reboot. The premise remains Isaac’s repair assignment aboard the Ishimura, while the remake’s creators have explained that some changes were made to fit continuity with the broader universe.
The team’s stated motivation
In an Electronic Arts developer feature, Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola described the goal this way: “And we wanted a whole new generation of gamers to experience the same feeling we had back in 2008!” This is a statement about the remake team’s motivation, not an independent measurement of the game’s quality.
What the later numbered games add to the route
Dead Space 2
Dead Space 2 is the direct numbered continuation after the first game. For a newcomer, its most important role is structural: it continues Isaac’s story rather than restarting the series with a new protagonist and unrelated premise. Playing one of the first-game versions first gives you the intended starting context.
Dead Space 3
Dead Space 3 is the third numbered entry. The official description places Isaac alongside Sergeant John Carver and identifies Tau Volantis as a destination. That is enough to establish its position in the route without revealing later story developments.
The safest way to approach the sequels is therefore chronological: first-game version, Dead Space 2, then Dead Space 3. Do not substitute the remake for a sequel or treat its 2023 date as evidence that it belongs after the numbered games.

Platforms, dates and purchase expectations
The confirmed platform information in the available official material applies to the 2023 remake: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its release date was January 27, 2023. Those facts identify the release, but they do not establish today’s price, stock, bundle contents or edition names.
Availability can change by region and storefront. Before buying, check that the listing names the exact game and platform you intend to use. In particular, distinguish Dead Space (2023) from the 2008 original, and do not assume that a listing for one version grants access to the other.
The official descriptions reviewed here do not provide a current price comparison or a verified affiliate listing. A sensible purchase decision should therefore begin with version and platform, then confirm the live store details separately.

Common beginner mistakes
- Calling the remake “Dead Space 4.” It is a remake of the first game, not a fourth numbered installment.
- Assuming the two first games are identical. EA describes the remake as faithful to the original vision but improved, and its team has discussed continuity-related changes.
- Skipping the first-game premise entirely. Both first-game options establish Isaac’s repair assignment, the Ishimura and the crisis that drives the series.
- Using release dates as a story order without checking the remake’s role. The 2023 date marks a remake release; it does not place that story after Dead Space 3.
- Expecting this guide to define every connected work. The main route described here covers the numbered games and the two first-game versions; it does not claim a complete chronology for every possible spin-off or adaptation.
- Treating a recommendation as a quality ranking. Choosing the original or remake is a matter of preferred version, platform and presentation. The available official descriptions do not establish an objective ranking between them.
A spoiler-light plan for your first week with the series
If you are deciding what to do rather than researching every release, keep the plan simple:
- Pick your entry version. Choose the 2008 original for the original-release experience or the 2023 remake for the modern retelling.
- Confirm the platform before you commit. The remake’s confirmed platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Start with the Ishimura assignment. Let Isaac’s repair mission introduce the setting and the central mystery without seeking plot summaries that reveal later turns.
- Finish that first-game version. You do not need to own or complete both versions before continuing.
- Move to Dead Space 2. It is the next numbered continuation of Isaac’s story.
- Follow with Dead Space 3. Its official description places Isaac and Sergeant John Carver on Tau Volantis.
This approach gives you a coherent beginning, preserves the choice between original and remake, and keeps the numbered storyline in order.
The short answer
Dead Space is a science-fiction survival-horror game series about engineer Isaac Clarke’s attempt to survive a catastrophic emergency aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura. Start with either the 2008 original or the 2023 remake, depending on whether you prefer the original release or the modern retelling. Then play Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 for Isaac’s main numbered storyline.
