What Is DC Dimming, and How Does It Reduce OLED Screen Flicker? DC dimming lowers an OLED display’s brightness by changing the electrical power delivered to its pixels. Pulse-width modulation (PWM), by contrast, rapidly switches the pixels on and off and changes the proportion of time they remain on. Reducing that periodic switching can reduce one important source of OLED flicker, but it does not guarantee a flicker-free image at every brightness level.

The result depends on the phone’s display electronics and software. Some devices use DC dimming only in part of their brightness range, use PWM elsewhere, or combine both methods. A setting called “DC dimming” or “anti-flicker” therefore needs to be understood as a device-specific behavior rather than a universal promise.

What DC dimming changes inside an OLED display

OLED pixels produce their own light, so the display can control brightness by changing the electrical drive applied to each emitting component. In DC dimming, the circuit varies that drive—typically by changing voltage or current—so the pixel emits continuously at a lower level. Xiaomi describes its implementation this way: “DC dimming directly adjusts the power supplied to the display’s light-emitting components.” That is a manufacturer description of its feature, not a specification that applies identically to every OLED panel.

PWM takes a different approach. Instead of continuously reducing the drive, the display rapidly alternates between an illuminated state and an off state. Average brightness is determined by the ratio of on time to off time. A longer on interval produces a brighter image; a shorter one produces a dimmer image. The switching may be too fast for conscious perception, yet a light sensor can still detect the resulting periodic modulation.

Dimming method How average brightness is changed What can happen at low brightness
DC dimming Electrical power delivered to the emitting components is varied. Brightness is reduced without the same on/off duty-cycle modulation, but color or gradient uniformity can deteriorate on some panels.
PWM dimming The display switches rapidly between on and off states; the on/off ratio sets average brightness. Periodic brightness modulation remains, and its measured behavior depends on the switching implementation and operating conditions.
Hybrid dimming The device changes method across the brightness range, such as PWM at one range and DC at another. Flicker and image characteristics can change when the brightness slider crosses the transition point.

“Flicker” in this context means time-varying light output, not necessarily a visible flashing effect. Whether a person notices it depends on modulation characteristics, viewing conditions, motion, and individual sensitivity. A camera or photometer can detect variation that is difficult to see directly, while a visible artifact can also arise from other display-processing behavior.

How DC dimming can reduce OLED flicker

When a display is operating in DC mode, lowering the electrical drive can reduce or avoid the periodic on/off modulation created by PWM. That removes one mechanism by which brightness changes over time. The screen may therefore show a steadier light output at settings where a PWM implementation would be switching between bright and dark states.

This explanation is conditional. Display electronics can use hybrid strategies, and other forms of temporal modulation may remain even when a menu identifies the mode as DC dimming. The amount of modulation must be measured on the specific device at a specified brightness, refresh rate, content pattern, and operating condition. A label alone cannot establish that every brightness level is free of flicker.

Why brightness level matters

Manufacturers often change dimming methods because OLED panels behave differently at low drive levels. A phone might preserve color and uniformity by using PWM in a low-brightness range, then switch to DC dimming as brightness increases. Another model may make the transition at a different point or provide no user-visible control over it. Moving the slider by a small amount can therefore change both the modulation behavior and the appearance of dark tones.

Documented device examples

Xiaomi 14

Xiaomi’s support documentation identifies DC dimming as an available function on the Xiaomi 14 and describes its anti-flicker control as adjusting power supplied to the display’s light-emitting components. The same documentation warns that enabling DC dimming at low brightness can cause loss of color gradients. Subtle transitions in shadows, skies, skin tones, or interface backgrounds may look less smooth when the panel cannot represent low drive levels evenly.

Xiaomi’s stated remedy is to switch the anti-flicker mode back to Regular or to increase screen brightness if the gradient effect is objectionable. This is a product-specific recommendation, not proof that Regular mode is preferable for every viewer or every environment.

POCO X6 Pro

Xiaomi’s support description for the POCO X6 Pro illustrates a hybrid design. It states that the phone uses high-frequency PWM at low brightness and DC dimming at high brightness. Consequently, selecting an anti-flicker-related option does not mean the phone uses DC dimming across the entire slider. The example also shows why two OLED phones with similar marketing language can behave differently.

These documents establish how the manufacturers describe their own models. They are not independent laboratory tests, and their behavior should not be generalized to unrelated OLED phones or tablets.

Image-quality trade-offs at low brightness

DC dimming is not a free improvement. At very low drive levels, an OLED circuit may have less precision for representing neighboring shades. The visible result can be banding, uneven dark areas, or a reduction in the smoothness of color gradients. Xiaomi explicitly documents gradient loss for the Xiaomi 14 when DC dimming is enabled at low brightness.

PWM can preserve a panel’s intended tonal steps by keeping the pixels at a more stable drive during each “on” interval and controlling average output through timing. That does not make PWM universally better: it trades some spatial or tonal behavior for temporal modulation. The practical choice is therefore a balance among flicker characteristics, grayscale smoothness, color gradients, and personal comfort.

Room lighting changes the decision as well. In a bright room, raising the display brightness may make a DC-related gradient artifact less noticeable and may move the phone into a different dimming range. In a dark room, a reader may prefer a lower setting but notice modulation or banding more readily. Test the exact device under the lighting and brightness conditions in which it is normally used.

What the available health evidence does—and does not—show

It is not appropriate to claim that DC dimming prevents eye strain, that PWM is dangerous, or that either mode is universally safe. The evidence described here supports an explanation of display behavior, not a medical diagnosis or a guarantee of comfort.

A 2025 IEEE conference abstract reported a 45-minute comparison conducted at 45–55 nits. Under those experimental conditions, the PWM condition produced greater effects on ocular imaging quality than the DC-dimming condition. The abstract did not find a statistically significant difference in visual-fatigue indices. The 45-minute duration and 45–55-nit level are protocol details, not population statistics, and a single abstract cannot establish clinical advice or predict every user’s response.

If a screen causes discomfort, practical steps include trying a different brightness, changing the phone’s dimming setting, increasing ambient light, taking regular visual breaks, and seeking professional advice for persistent symptoms. None of those steps turns a manufacturer’s mode label into a health certification.

How OLED flicker should be measured and compared

Measurements are meaningful only when their conditions are comparable. A reported modulation value should identify the brightness level, refresh-rate setting, display content or test pattern, measurement instrument, and whether the phone was operating in DC, PWM, or a hybrid range. Numbers taken at different conditions should not be ranked as though they were equivalent.

The relevant identified OLED image-quality standard is IEC 62341-6-3. Its catalog description includes flicker among OLED image-quality measurement topics. IEC metadata also notes that the 2012 base publication was withdrawn and that a later corrected edition exists, including a correction associated with the 2017 edition. Anyone claiming that a phone or test is IEC-compliant should consult the applicable full standard and edition rather than relying on a general reference to its number.

IEEE 1789-2015 is different in scope. Its catalog describes recommended practices for modulation of current in high-brightness LEDs, not a clinical safety rule for OLED phones. The catalog record lists the standard as inactive-reserved as of 2026-03-26. It should not be presented as a current universal OLED-phone flicker limit.

How to check and use a phone’s dimming controls

The exact menu names vary by manufacturer and software version. Use the phone’s display settings and its support documentation to determine what the control actually changes.

  1. Find the display control. Open Settings, then look under Display, Brightness, or a similarly named section. Search the settings app for “flicker,” “anti-flicker,” “DC dimming,” or “PWM” if the option is not visible.
  2. Read the model-specific description. Check whether the manufacturer states that the feature applies only above or below a brightness threshold, or whether it switches between PWM and DC. Do not infer full-range behavior from the label alone.
  3. Test several brightness levels. Compare low, medium, and high settings with the same static image. Look at gray gradients, dark scenes, and large areas of uniform color, because these reveal banding or unevenness more readily than a detailed photograph.
  4. Check the transition range. Move the slider slowly while viewing a uniform gray or dark background. A change in texture, color, or perceived stability can indicate that the phone has changed its dimming strategy.
  5. Choose the acceptable compromise. If temporal modulation is uncomfortable, try the manufacturer’s DC or anti-flicker mode and raise brightness enough to avoid visible gradient loss. If gradients become distracting, return to Regular mode or use a brightness level where the image looks uniform.
  6. Recheck after software updates. Display behavior is controlled by firmware as well as hardware. A system update can change menu labels, transition points, or available modes, so repeat the check if the screen’s appearance changes.

A practical comparison framework

When comparing two OLED devices, use the same questions for both rather than treating a marketing term as a result.

  • Documented method: Does the manufacturer identify DC, PWM, or a hybrid approach?
  • Brightness coverage: At which brightness levels does each method operate, and is there a documented transition?
  • Measurement conditions: Were flicker measurements taken at comparable brightness, refresh rate, content, and instrument settings?
  • Low-brightness image quality: Do grayscale ramps, color gradients, and uniform fields remain smooth?
  • Controls: Can the user select a mode, or is the behavior fixed by automatic software?
  • Personal comfort: How does the screen feel during ordinary use in the reader’s actual room lighting?

No single axis predicts the best choice for every person. A phone with lower measured modulation may show more obvious gradient artifacts, while another may preserve gradients but use PWM in the range a particular viewer finds uncomfortable.

Common misunderstandings and fixes

“DC dimming means the phone never flickers.”

Not necessarily. A device may use PWM at other brightness levels, retain other temporal modulation, or change behavior after an automatic brightness adjustment. Verify the model’s documented operating ranges and test the settings you actually use.

“PWM is always harmful.”

The cited 2025 experiment found a difference in ocular imaging effects under its conditions but no statistically significant difference in visual-fatigue indices. That limited result does not support a universal harm claim.

“The highest brightness is always the best solution.”

Raising brightness can reduce low-drive gradient loss on some displays, but it may be unnecessarily bright in a dark room. Use the lowest setting that looks comfortable and uniform, while recognizing that the dimming method may change as the slider moves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A standard number proves a phone is safe.”

IEC 62341-6-3 identifies OLED image-quality measurement topics, while IEEE 1789-2015 concerns high-brightness LEDs and carries inactive-reserved status in the cited catalog record. Neither statement is a blanket clinical guarantee for an individual OLED phone.

Bottom line for choosing a dimming mode

DC dimming can reduce the periodic brightness modulation associated with PWM by changing pixel drive instead of rapidly switching emission on and off. Its benefits and drawbacks are implementation-specific: hybrid ranges are common, and low-brightness color gradients may suffer. Treat the manufacturer’s documentation as a starting point, inspect the screen at the brightness levels you use, and judge the trade-off between modulation and image quality for your own viewing conditions.
