Database normalization organizes relational data so each fact is stored in an appropriate place and dependencies between facts are represented clearly. It helps prevent conflicting copies and insertion, update, and deletion anomalies—but it can also mean more tables and joins. The common design path is to check first, second, and third normal form, then consider stricter forms such as BCNF when the candidate keys and dependencies call for it.

What is database normalization?

Normalization is a relational database design process that structures tables around keys and functional dependencies: rules about which attributes determine other attributes. For example, if a product ID determines a product name, the name is a fact about the product, not about each order line that happens to contain that product.

The goal is not to split every table as far as possible. It is to represent the facts and their relationships in a way that reduces unnecessary duplication while preserving the information an application needs. As Microsoft’s Database design basics puts it, “Normalization is most useful after you have represented all of the information items and have arrived at a preliminary design.”

When the same fact is copied into multiple rows, the copies can diverge. That creates three familiar anomalies:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Update anomaly: a fact must be changed in several places, and one copy is missed.
  • Insertion anomaly: a fact cannot be recorded without also creating an unrelated record.
  • Deletion anomaly: removing one record accidentally removes the only stored copy of another fact.

Normalization is a way to address these risks through schema design. It does not determine which facts the application needs or replace decisions about business rules.

What are the normal forms in DBMS?

Normal forms are progressively stricter guidelines for structuring relational tables. The examples below follow an order-and-product model, with a student-course example for first normal form. They illustrate the usual teaching rules; a real schema should be evaluated against its actual keys and business dependencies.

First normal form (1NF): represent values and relationships in rows

A table is commonly taught as meeting 1NF when each row-column intersection holds a single value and repeating groups are removed. For example, a student table with columns Class1, Class2, and Class3 has a repeating group. Storing a list of classes in one cell creates a similar problem when the application needs to work with each class separately.

StudentID CourseID

42 HIST205

A key such as (StudentID, CourseID) can distinguish each association. “Single value” is interpreted in the context of the data model and application: the design should make a value usable as the kind of fact the application needs, rather than treating every string as indivisible by definition.

Second normal form (2NF): remove partial dependencies

2NF matters when a table has a composite key—one made from more than one attribute. In the following order-line table, assume the key is (OrderID, ProductID):

OrderID ProductID Quantity ProductName
1001 P17 2 Desk lamp

Quantity can depend on the whole order-product pair, but ProductName depends only on ProductID. That is a partial dependency: a non-key fact depends on only part of the composite key. Store the product fact once in a Products table and retain ProductID in the order line:

OrderLine: OrderID OrderLine: ProductID OrderLine: Quantity
1001 P17 2
Products: ProductID Products: ProductName
P17 Desk lamp

With a single-attribute key, there is no smaller part of that key for a fact to depend on, so the partial-dependency test does not apply. A single-key table can still have other dependency problems, including ones addressed by 3NF.

Third normal form (3NF): remove non-key dependencies on other non-key facts

The common shorthand for 3NF is that non-key facts depend on “the key, the whole key, and nothing but the key.” In dependency terms, a non-key attribute should not depend transitively on a key through another non-key attribute.

Suppose a Products table contains ProductID, Name, SRP, and Discount, and the business rule says that SRP determines Discount. Then the discount is not an independent fact determined by ProductID; the dependency is ProductID → SRP → Discount. Depending on the rule and application, the SRP-to-discount relationship may belong in a separate table or be represented another way. The important point is to confirm that the dependency is a genuine business rule before changing the schema. A repeated value alone does not automatically require a lookup table.

Boyce-Codd normal form (BCNF): check every determinant

BCNF is a stricter dependency check often considered when a 3NF design still has anomalies involving multiple candidate keys. A candidate key is a minimal set of attributes that uniquely identifies a row; a determinant is an attribute or set of attributes that determines another attribute. The BCcampus normalization chapter describes the BCNF condition as requiring every determinant to be a candidate key.

BCNF is not a mandatory destination for every application. It is useful when the actual candidate keys and dependencies expose a problem that the usual 3NF check does not resolve.

What normalization improves—and what it costs

Keeping a fact in one authoritative place reduces the risk of updating one copy while leaving another unchanged. Separating entities can also let a business record one kind of fact without needing to create an unrelated record. Microsoft’s database normalization guidance illustrates the issue with customer addresses duplicated in customer, order, shipping, invoice, receivables, and collections records: changing one authoritative address is easier than tracking every copy.

Normalization has practical costs. It can introduce more tables and relationships, make the structure less convenient to read at a glance, and require joins to assemble information for a query. Those are design tradeoffs, not proof that normalized databases are inherently slow. The effect depends on the database, query, indexes, data size, and workload. Microsoft’s legacy Access guidance also cautions that many small tables may be impractical in some contexts and recommends attention to frequently changing data.

One empirical result should be read narrowly: a 2025 arXiv preprint reports that its authors reduced on-disk database size by 10% when moving from 1NF to 2NF in an experiment using the IMDb dataset and PostgreSQL. The same study reports more tables and rows overall and greater query complexity as normalization increased, while explicitly limiting its conclusions to that specific case. It is not a general performance prediction for other schemas or database systems. See the study and its methods.

When should you normalize or denormalize a database?

Start by representing entities, keys, and dependencies clearly. Do not add duplicated data simply because a join looks inconvenient in an unmeasured query. A disciplined decision process is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Model the business facts. Identify what each row represents, the keys that identify it, and which attributes depend on those keys.
  2. Measure a real bottleneck. Use representative data and workload to determine whether a query, report, join, or aggregate is actually too slow or costly.
  3. Compare alternatives. Depending on the database and application, consider an index, query rewrite, cache, materialized result, or a deliberately redundant field.
  4. Specify consistency behavior. For any duplicated or cached value, define when it is updated, whether it is maintained in the same transaction, how existing rows are backfilled, and how errors or missed updates are recovered.
  5. Re-measure. Confirm that the change helps the intended workload and that its write costs and consistency behavior are acceptable.

Denormalization as an explicit tradeoff

Denormalization deliberately adds redundant data, often to avoid joins or repeated computation. Microsoft’s EF Core performance guidance gives the example of storing the average rating of a blog’s posts on the Blog row. That value is a cached aggregate: the application must decide whether some lag is acceptable or whether updates and recalculations must keep it current.

Choose denormalization only when a measured read path justifies the extra work of maintaining the copy. The design should make the authoritative value, update timing, transaction behavior, backfill, and recovery path explicit. Without that plan, a faster read can reintroduce the conflicting copies normalization was intended to prevent.
