Dark energy is the name for the unknown cause associated with the universe’s accelerating expansion. The acceleration is supported by several independent kinds of observation, but no experiment has identified a dark-energy particle or substance. The leading explanations are a cosmological constant (vacuum energy), a changing field such as quintessence, or a modification of gravity on the largest scales.
What exactly is dark energy?
Dark energy is a label for a cosmological inference, not the name of a detected material. Astronomers observe how the universe expands and how matter clumps within it, then compare those measurements with predictions from general relativity and competing cosmological models. The observations show that expansion is speeding up at late cosmic times. “Dark energy” denotes whatever physical cause produces that behavior.
NASA estimates that dark energy accounts for approximately 68.3% to 70% of the universe’s total energy budget in the standard cosmological model. That percentage is a model-based estimate of the component required to fit observations; it is not a direct inventory of a visible substance.
The phrase can therefore be misleading if read as though scientists have already found a new force or particle. The secure conclusion is the acceleration. The identity, microscopic nature and even the possibility that the effect reflects a change in gravity remain open questions. NASA’s plain-language summary is blunt: “The short answer is: We don’t know.”

Dark energy is not dark matter
Dark matter and dark energy are separate inferences. Dark matter is the name given to unseen matter inferred from its gravitational pull on galaxies, galaxy clusters and the growth of structure. It behaves, on large scales, more like an attractive gravitating component. Dark energy is the label for the cause associated with accelerated expansion, an effect that acts differently in the cosmic expansion history. Their names share the word “dark” because neither is directly seen, not because they are the same substance.
How did scientists discover cosmic acceleration?
In the late 1990s, two teams used distant Type Ia supernovae to measure how the expansion rate had changed over time. These explosions have a useful relationship between their light-curve shape, color and intrinsic brightness. After correcting for those properties, astronomers can compare how bright a supernova should be with how bright it appears and infer its distance.
At the time, a universe containing matter was expected to have slowing expansion: gravity should gradually reduce the expansion rate left over from the Big Bang. In that picture, distant supernovae would appear brighter than they do in an accelerating universe. Instead, the observed supernovae were fainter than expected. Fainter apparent brightness indicated greater distances, consistent with the universe having expanded faster during the more recent part of its history than a decelerating model predicted.

The result was not a photograph of dark energy. It was a measurement of the expansion history that required an additional effect when interpreted within general relativity. The U.S. Department of Energy’s historical account describes the 1998 evidence and the independent observations that followed. As Harvard researcher Daniel Eisenstein put it, “Cosmic acceleration really points to something fundamentally different about how the forces of the universe work.”
What observations support the acceleration?
No single measurement supplies the entire case. Modern cosmology combines probes that cover different redshift ranges, depend on different calibrations and constrain related but distinct quantities. Agreement among them is powerful; differences between them are also important because they reveal where systematic errors or model assumptions may matter.
Type Ia supernovae: distance comparisons
Supernova surveys map how inferred distance changes with redshift. Their strengths are broad redshift coverage and sensitivity to the late-time expansion history. Their limitations include calibration of the brightness scale, corrections for dust, correlations with host-galaxy properties and the possibility that supernova populations evolve over cosmic time. A fitted acceleration signal must therefore account for both statistical uncertainty and these astrophysical systematics.

Baryon acoustic oscillations: a standard ruler
Before galaxies formed, sound waves traveled through the hot plasma of the early universe. Their characteristic scale was imprinted in how galaxies are distributed. This feature, called baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), provides a calibrated standard ruler. Measuring its apparent size at different redshifts constrains distances and expansion rates.

Supernovae primarily provide relative distance comparisons after calibration, while BAO ties measurements to a physical length scale set by early-universe physics. Combining them can narrow the allowed expansion histories, but the result depends on the assumed early-universe model and on how the datasets are fitted together.
Cosmic microwave background: early-universe boundary conditions
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) is radiation released when the early universe became transparent. Its pattern constrains the geometry, matter content and initial conditions of the cosmos with great precision. The CMB is not a direct image of dark energy: most of its information comes from an era long before the recent acceleration became important.
When a CMB-derived cosmological model is extrapolated forward and compared with lower-redshift supernova or BAO measurements, the combination constrains dark-energy behavior. A tension or preference can therefore reflect the comparison between epochs, not a direct detection of a dark-energy substance in the CMB itself.
Weak gravitational lensing and growth of structure
Mass bends light. Weak-lensing surveys measure tiny, statistical distortions in the shapes of distant galaxies to map how matter is distributed and how that distribution changes with time. Structure growth depends on the expansion history and on the law of gravity, so lensing supplies a test that is complementary to distance measurements.

Shape measurements, estimates of galaxy redshifts, intrinsic alignments of galaxies and the astrophysics of ordinary matter all affect the result. These uncertainties must be modeled before a growth measurement can be compared fairly with a dark-energy hypothesis.

What could dark energy possibly be?
Several explanations can reproduce an accelerating expansion. None has been established as the physical answer.
A cosmological constant or vacuum energy
The simplest model adds a constant term to Einstein’s equations. In modern notation it is commonly written as Λ, and the overall model is called ΛCDM: Λ for the cosmological constant and CDM for cold dark matter. A cosmological constant has a uniform energy density that does not dilute as the universe expands. Its negative pressure drives acceleration in general relativity.
ΛCDM fits a wide range of observations with comparatively few parameters, which is why it remains the leading baseline. Its major theoretical problem is the value. Straightforward estimates of vacuum energy from quantum physics differ from the observed dark-energy density by a factor of 10120, according to NASA. This is the cosmological-constant problem. The enormous mismatch is a problem in theoretical understanding, not a claim that observations have an uncertainty of 120 orders of magnitude.
Quintessence or another dynamic field
A dynamic field could have an energy density or pressure that changes over time or varies across space. Such models are often grouped under the term quintessence, although many variants exist. Their expansion history can differ subtly from a true cosmological constant, especially at intermediate redshifts.
A field has not been detected. To support this explanation, observations would need to show a reproducible departure from constant behavior while also matching the growth of structure and other tests of gravity. The field’s mass, interactions and initial conditions would then become additional questions.
Modified gravity
Acceleration might indicate that general relativity needs modification on cosmological scales rather than that the universe contains a new energy component. Modified-gravity theories alter how spacetime responds to matter or how gravity behaves over very large distances.

These theories must satisfy more than the background expansion data. They also need to reproduce the observed growth of galaxies, gravitational lensing and the behavior of gravitational waves and local gravitational tests. A model that fits the expansion but predicts the wrong structure growth would not be a successful explanation.
Other proposals
NASA lists possibilities such as cosmic defects among other speculative ideas. These are not equally developed or equally supported. They remain alternatives to investigate, not established competitors to ΛCDM.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is dark energy changing over time?
The answer is not settled. A constant cosmological constant is still consistent with many datasets, while some recent combinations show a preference for models that allow evolution. The result depends on which observations are combined, how nuisance parameters and systematic errors are treated, and which functional form is used for the time dependence.
A commonly used phenomenological model is called w0waCDM. It allows the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter, w, to vary with cosmic time. ΛCDM corresponds to the special case in which w is exactly −1 and does not evolve. A preference for the more flexible model does not prove that a changing field exists; it means that, under the stated assumptions, the data fit that model better than the restricted constant model.
What the 2025 PDG review reports
The 2025 Particle Data Group review reports a 3.1σ preference in a comparison of a DESI plus CMB dataset with ΛCDM using the w0waCDM model. That significance applies to that data combination and those modeling assumptions. Adding supernova compilations changes the significance, so 3.1σ must not be presented as a universal measurement or as a discovery of evolving dark energy.
The review describes DESI’s three-year dataset as containing more than 30 million galaxies and quasars and 0.8 million Lyman-α forest spectra. Those are counts of astronomical measurements in the survey, not counts of direct dark-energy detections.

Why the result is a hint, not a verdict
- Different probes cover different redshift ranges and have different calibration systems.
- A flexible model can improve a statistical fit simply because it has more freedom.
- Supernova choices, host-galaxy corrections and other systematic treatments alter the combined preference.
- CMB, BAO and supernova datasets can each be fit well by ΛCDM while preferring somewhat different parameter values.
- Statistical significance describes the comparison under a specified model; it does not identify a particle, field or modified-gravity mechanism.
The scientifically responsible description is that evolving dark energy is an active possibility under investigation. More data and better control of systematic effects are required before treating it as an established change in cosmic behavior.
How to interpret disagreements between cosmological measurements
When two analyses disagree, ask five questions before deciding that one has disproved dark energy or ΛCDM:
- Which probe is being used? Supernovae, BAO, CMB and lensing measure different observables.
- What redshift range is covered? A discrepancy may be localized to an epoch rather than present everywhere.
- How is the measurement calibrated? Distance scales, standard rulers, galaxy shapes and redshift estimates each have distinct calibration chains.
- Which systematic uncertainties dominate? Dust, host-galaxy effects, intrinsic alignments, baryonic physics or survey selection can shift fitted parameters.
- What model and other datasets enter the fit? A result obtained with CMB plus BAO is not interchangeable with one obtained after adding a particular supernova compilation.
This framework prevents a common mistake: treating a difference in preferred parameters as proof that one experiment has directly observed a new form of energy. It may instead indicate an unmodeled systematic, statistical fluctuation or a limitation of the assumed cosmological model.

What is actually established, and what remains open?
Established observational conclusion
Late-time cosmic expansion is accelerating within the framework that successfully describes the supernova distance measurements and is supported by complementary cosmological observations. The acceleration is a robust feature of the evidence, even though its interpretation is model-dependent.
Unsettled physical cause
It is not known whether the cause is a constant energy component, a dynamic field, modified gravity or another effect. No direct laboratory detection of dark energy exists, and no named particle has been confirmed as its carrier.
Unsolved theoretical scale
If the cause is vacuum energy, theory does not explain why its observed density is so small compared with simple quantum-physics estimates. Resolving that mismatch may require new ideas in quantum gravity, cosmology or both.
Future empirical tests
Discriminating among models requires simultaneous measurements of expansion and structure growth over broad redshift ranges. A convincing departure from ΛCDM would need to recur across independent surveys, survive alternative calibration choices and produce a consistent pattern in distances, BAO, CMB-derived parameters, lensing and growth. Conversely, continued agreement with a constant equation of state would make dynamic models increasingly constrained.
A practical way to read a dark-energy headline
- Look for the exact dataset combination, not just the survey name.
- Check whether the analysis compares ΛCDM with a more flexible model such as w0waCDM.
- Read the quoted significance together with the assumptions and systematic-error treatment.
- Distinguish “preference,” “tension” or “hint” from “discovery.”
- Ask whether the result concerns expansion, structure growth or both.
- Remember that a model fit is evidence about a hypothesis, not a direct photograph or particle detection.
Dark energy is therefore best understood as a placeholder name for a real cosmological effect whose underlying physics is unknown. The universe’s expansion accelerates; the reason it does so remains one of modern physics’ central open questions.
