CurseForge is a website and desktop app for finding, installing, updating, and managing Minecraft: Java Edition mods and modpacks. It creates a separate profile for each setup, keeping the selected Minecraft version, modloader, mods, configurations, resource packs, data packs, shaders, and other files together. You can install a published pack in a few clicks or build a custom profile from scratch.
The key to a trouble-free setup is compatibility: every mod in a profile must support the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader. The instructions below cover installation, custom packs, adding individual mods, launch choices, pack selection, and the fixes for the failures users encounter most often.

What CurseForge does
CurseForge is both a catalog and a management application. The website is where you discover projects; the desktop app downloads their files, creates the required Minecraft instance, and gives you controls for launching and maintaining it.
CurseForge Support defines a profile as “collections of settings and files required to launch a custom modded instance of Minecraft: Java Edition.” A profile has a Minecraft version, a modloader when one is needed, configuration files, and the installed mods. A modpack is a prepared profile that can also include resource packs, data packs, shaders, maps, and other configuration files.

Profiles are separate instances
Each profile is kept apart from your other profiles. That means you can have one profile for a large technology-focused pack and another for a lightweight vanilla-plus setup without manually swapping folders. The profile’s version and loader determine which files can be added.
This separation is useful when two packs target different Minecraft releases or loaders. You select the profile you want to play instead of changing a single shared installation every time. It also makes the source of a problem easier to identify: if one profile stops launching while another still works, the issue is more likely to be inside the affected profile than in every Minecraft installation on the computer.
Supported loaders
The app supports modded profiles using Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. It can also create a Vanilla profile without a modloader. A modloader is the component that loads mods and their associated files when Minecraft starts; it is not interchangeable between profiles. A Fabric mod file does not become a Forge mod merely because both target the same Minecraft release.
Java Edition scope
CurseForge profiles launch Minecraft: Java Edition. They are not Bedrock add-on profiles. If you own Minecraft for PC, make sure the Java Edition installation and the Microsoft account you use to launch it are available before troubleshooting a pack. Owning or installing the base game is separate from installing the CurseForge app and a particular modpack; check the current edition, region, and price in the store you plan to use.
What you need before installing a pack
- The CurseForge desktop app installed on your computer.
- A legitimate Minecraft: Java Edition installation and a Microsoft/Minecraft account.
- Enough disk space for the game, the selected pack, downloaded dependencies, and saves.
- A Minecraft version and modloader combination supported by the pack you intend to use.
- Write access to the folder where the app stores its Minecraft profiles.
Large packs can contain many mods and high-resolution assets, so their hardware and memory requirements vary. Check the project’s stated requirements and gameplay description rather than assuming that every pack will run like an unmodded game. A pack with shaders, extensive world-generation changes, or a large collection of content may need more storage and memory than a small vanilla-plus profile.
Install a published modpack
This is the simplest route when the pack is listed in CurseForge’s catalog.
- Install and open the CurseForge app. Select Minecraft from the game list.
- Open Browse or Discover and choose Modpacks. Filter the catalog by Minecraft version, modloader, category, or any other available facet. Filtering first prevents you from choosing a pack that cannot run with the game version you have in mind.
- Open the pack’s project page and click Install. The app downloads the pack and configures its profile, including the required loader and included files.
- Go to My Modpacks. Wait for the profile to finish downloading and configuring before launching it.
- Select the profile and click Play. CurseForge can hand off to the Mojang/Microsoft launcher, or you can use the app’s own CurseForge launcher mode.
Installing from the CurseForge website
A pack page on the website can expose an Install deep link. Click Install, choose Open when your browser asks which application should handle the link, and the CurseForge app will begin installing the profile. If nothing happens, confirm that the desktop app is installed and that your browser is allowed to open external applications.
Importing an exported pack
For a pack supplied as an export rather than a catalog project, use the app’s import option and select the exported file or enter the supplied import code. The archive must be a valid ZIP and, for a standard exported profile, must contain manifest.json. An incomplete download, a renamed non-ZIP file, or an archive without that manifest will stop the import before a usable profile is created.
Importing is different from installing a catalog project. A direct install can obtain the project’s listed dependencies from CurseForge; an import depends on the archive being complete and readable. If an import fails immediately, validate the archive before changing Minecraft versions or adding individual mods.
Create your own custom profile
Creating a profile is useful when you want a small collection of specific mods instead of a published pack.

- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Open the Minecraft section of the CurseForge app and click Create.
- Enter a profile name that identifies its purpose, such as a building test profile or a particular multiplayer pack.
- Choose the Minecraft version.
- Choose a modloader and its version. If you are unsure which advanced version to select, keep the app’s automatically selected compatible setting.
- Open the new profile under My Modpacks.
- Click Add More Content, then select and install the mods, resource packs, or maps you want.
- Return to the profile and click Play after the downloads and configuration steps finish.
You can also start from an individual mod. From the app or the website, choose a mod and select the option to add it to a profile. CurseForge detects compatible game-version and modloader combinations, then lets you create a new profile or choose an existing one.
Adding non-mod content
The Add More Content workflow is not limited to code-based mods. Depending on what the project supports, you can add resource packs that change textures, data packs that alter game data, maps, and shaders. These files still belong to the profile, so check the project’s listed Minecraft release and any loader requirement before installing them. A shader or resource pack may be compatible with the game version while still adding substantial performance or storage demands.
How compatibility works
Compatibility is checked against two independent values: the Minecraft version and the modloader. Both have to line up before a mod can be added to a profile.
| Check | What must match | What you will see when it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | The mod must list the same Minecraft release targeted by the profile. | The mod is unavailable for that profile or cannot be installed into it. |
| Modloader | The mod and profile must use the same loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. | The app blocks selection or installation because the loader is incompatible. |
| Version and loader | Both values must match at the same time. | If both differ, the profile may not appear as an option at all. |
| Duplicate mod | The profile should contain one intended version of a given mod. | CurseForge warns that the mod is already present; proceeding can override the existing version. |
Use this practical order: choose the pack first, note its Minecraft version and loader, and then add only files whose listings show those same values. A file labelled for Forge is not suitable for a Fabric profile, and a file for one Minecraft release should not be assumed to work on another.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When adding a mod is blocked
- Open the mod’s file or project details and check its supported Minecraft version.
- Check whether the file is for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt.
- Compare both values with the profile details, not just the name of the mod.
- If the profile already contains that mod, decide whether replacing its version is intentional before accepting the override warning.
Do not solve a blocked installation by repeatedly selecting different files at random. A different file may target another loader, and accepting a duplicate override can replace the version that the pack’s configuration expects. If the app offers no compatible profile at all, create a profile with the release and loader shown in the mod’s listing, or choose a different modpack.
Choosing between modpacks
Popularity alone does not tell you whether a pack is suitable. Compare packs on the dimensions that affect installation, play style, and maintenance.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Which release does the pack target? | It determines which mods, worlds, and external files can be used with the profile. |
| Modloader | Does it use Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt? | The loader must match every mod and affects which additional mods are available. |
| Included content | Does it include mods only, or also resource packs, data packs, shaders, maps, and custom configuration? | These additions change the appearance, mechanics, storage needs, and setup time. |
| Gameplay goal | Is it focused on technology, exploration, magic, building, quests, or a lighter vanilla-style experience? | A pack’s theme determines whether its included systems fit the way you want to play. |
| Update cadence | How frequently are files and configurations maintained? | Frequent updates can add fixes but may also require more downloads or create version changes. |
| Hardware demand | What memory and performance requirements does the project state? | Large mod collections and shaders can need substantially more resources than a small pack. |
| Multiplayer requirements | Do all players and the server use the same pack, version, and loader? | Different profile contents can prevent players from joining the same modded world. |
| Delivery method | Is it installed directly from CurseForge or imported as an export? | Direct installs resolve the catalog project automatically; imports depend on a valid archive and manifest. |
Direct installation versus import
A catalog installation is usually the least complicated choice because the app knows the project identity and can configure its profile. An exported pack is useful when someone has shared a customized setup, but you must have the complete ZIP and its manifest.json. When comparing two otherwise similar packs, include this delivery difference in your decision: an import can fail before any mod compatibility check if the archive is damaged.
Maintaining profiles after installation
CurseForge is intended to manage profiles after the first launch, not just install them once. Revisit My Modpacks when a project publishes an update, and read the pack’s notes before accepting a version change. Updates can alter the Minecraft release, loader, included mods, or configuration files, so a profile that works today may require a matching version of an added mod tomorrow.
For a custom profile, keep the Minecraft version and loader visible while you add content. Install one compatible file at a time when diagnosing a problem; that makes the newest change easier to identify than adding a large group of files and testing only after all of them are present. Treat the duplicate-mod warning as a maintenance decision, not as a harmless prompt.
Choose how the profile launches
CurseForge supports three launch arrangements: the Classic/Mojang launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, and the CurseForge launcher. The first two hand the game off to the standard Minecraft launch process.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
To bypass the standard launcher and use CurseForge’s launcher mode, sign in with a Microsoft/Minecraft account when the app requests it. If you prefer not to use that mode, select the Mojang/Microsoft launcher in the Minecraft settings and let CurseForge hand off the profile instead.
Regardless of launcher choice, the profile still requires Minecraft: Java Edition and the correct account authentication. Changing launchers does not repair an incompatible mod or an incorrect loader. If the CurseForge launcher fails but the standard launcher works, switching the handoff method is a reasonable diagnostic step.
Local play, multiplayer, and hosting
You do not need a separate server to play a CurseForge profile locally in single-player. Multiplayer is an additional deployment decision. Every participating player and the server need a compatible Minecraft version, modloader, and pack contents; a profile that launches successfully on one computer can still be refused by a server with different files.
Server hosting is optional rather than a prerequisite for CurseForge. If you choose a hosting provider, verify that it supports the pack’s exact Minecraft release and loader before paying for a plan. The provider’s current features and pricing can change, so check those details directly. For local play, the CurseForge profile and your Java Edition account are sufficient.
Troubleshoot a modpack that will not install or launch
Work through these checks in order. They separate installation problems from profile compatibility and launcher problems, so you do not reinstall everything unnecessarily.
1. Run Repair Installation
Open the CurseForge app menu and choose Repair Installation. This is the first recovery step for common installation and launch failures because it repairs the app’s installation state before you change individual mods.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Confirm Java is installed and current
CurseForge states that Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks. An outdated or missing Java installation can cause a profile to fail during launch even when the pack itself is valid. Install or update Java through your operating system’s normal trusted channel, then restart CurseForge and try the profile again.
3. Check the modding-folder path and permissions
On Windows, CurseForge’s guidance identifies several locations that can cause trouble: the Desktop, OneDrive-synchronised folders, the vanilla .minecraft directory, a root drive, and paths containing special characters. These locations can introduce synchronisation conflicts, permission restrictions, or path-handling errors. In the app’s Minecraft settings, choose a simple folder where your account has read and write access, then allow the app to recreate or move the profile data there.
4. Validate an imported archive
If a downloaded or shared pack will not import, verify that the file is a real ZIP and that it contains manifest.json. Re-download the archive if it was truncated, and do not merely change a file extension to “.zip.” An export missing its manifest cannot provide CurseForge with the dependency and profile information it needs.
5. Isolate custom-profile incompatibilities
For a profile you built yourself, review recently added mods first. Confirm the Minecraft version and loader for each one. Remove or replace a file that targets a different loader or release, and pay attention to the duplicate-mod warning: accepting an override can replace the version that another configuration expects.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen

6. Switch the launcher mode
If the CurseForge launcher itself fails but the profile is otherwise configured correctly, open Minecraft settings in CurseForge and switch to the Mojang/Microsoft launcher. Try launching again. This changes the handoff method; it does not change the profile’s mods or loader.
7. Check firewall and antivirus interference
Launcher downloads can fail when a firewall or antivirus product blocks CurseForge, the selected launcher, or their download connections. Review the security product’s blocked or quarantined items and allow the required applications according to its normal procedures. Retry the download after the rule is applied.
8. Separate a pack problem from an account problem
If no profile launches, first verify that Minecraft: Java Edition opens normally with the same account. If vanilla Java Edition works but one profile fails, focus on that profile’s loader, files, and configuration. If the standard game also fails, resolve the launcher or account issue before changing mods.

Can I use CurseForge without a modloader?
Yes. The app can create Vanilla profiles without Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. Mods that require a loader cannot be used in that Vanilla profile.
Why is a mod not available for my profile?
Its listed Minecraft version or modloader does not match the profile, or the profile already contains that mod and requires an explicit version decision. Check both compatibility values rather than relying on the mod’s name.
Do I need a separate server to play a CurseForge pack?
No. CurseForge profiles can be launched locally for single-player play. Multiplayer adds a separate requirement: the participating players and server must agree on the same compatible pack, Minecraft version, and loader.
What does the Play button actually launch?
It launches the selected profile through the launcher mode configured in CurseForge. That may be the Mojang/Microsoft launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, or CurseForge’s own launcher mode.
Does CurseForge include Minecraft?
No. CurseForge manages profiles, but you still need Minecraft: Java Edition and a Microsoft/Minecraft account. The base game purchase is separate, and the current edition and regional price should be checked in the relevant store.
Why does an imported pack need manifest.json?
A standard exported profile uses manifest.json to describe the pack and its dependencies. If the ZIP is incomplete or lacks that file, CurseForge cannot create the profile correctly. Re-download the export and confirm it is a genuine ZIP.
Can I use a Forge mod in a Fabric profile?
No. The modloader is part of the compatibility check. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt files must be matched to the same loader selected for the profile, even when the Minecraft release number is identical.

What should I check first when a pack will not launch?
Run Repair Installation, confirm Java is current, and check that the profile folder has write access. Then verify the pack’s Minecraft version, loader, and recently added mods. If the CurseForge launcher is the only failing component, switch to the Mojang/Microsoft launcher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy can’t I add a duplicate mod?
CurseForge warns when the profile already contains that mod. Continuing may override the installed version, which can change the configuration another part of the pack expects. Only accept the replacement when you intentionally want that version.
Do shaders and resource packs change compatibility?
They are part of the profile’s included content and can have their own version requirements or performance impact. Check their listed Minecraft support and the pack’s stated hardware expectations before adding them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is CurseForge used for in Minecraft?
It is a website and desktop app for discovering, installing, updating, and launching Minecraft: Java Edition mods and modpacks in separate profiles.
How do I install a CurseForge modpack?
Install and open the app, choose Minecraft, browse Modpacks, select a pack, click Install, wait for it to finish under My Modpacks, and click Play.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why is my CurseForge modpack incompatible?
The Minecraft version or modloader does not match. Check both values for the profile and every mod; Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt files are not interchangeable.
Why will my CurseForge modpack not launch?
Run Repair Installation, confirm Java is installed and current, check folder permissions and path, validate imported ZIP files, review recently added mods, and try another launcher mode.
Can I play a CurseForge pack without a server?
Yes. A profile works for local single-player. Multiplayer requires the server and all players to use compatible pack contents, Minecraft version, and loader.
What does manifest.json do in an imported pack?
It describes the exported profile and its dependencies. A valid ZIP without that manifest cannot be imported as a standard CurseForge profile.
The Bottom Line
CurseForge keeps Minecraft: Java Edition modpacks in self-contained profiles. Install a published pack through Browse and My Modpacks, or create one with Create and Add More Content. Always match the Minecraft version and modloader, and remember that Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt are separate ecosystems. When something fails, start with Repair Installation, current Java, a writable profile folder, a valid manifest.json for imports, and the configured launcher mode.
