Cryptographic bunker mode is a proposed precaution: plan a careful move of blockchain assets to fresh, compatible addresses whose public keys have not been revealed by signing. It is not a newly deployed security feature, and current reporting does not show that AI has broken the cryptography protecting blockchain wallets. The idea is to reduce one possible exposure if future advances weaken the assumptions behind some digital signatures—not to trigger a rushed mass transfer today.
What “bunker mode” means
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake called on the blockchain industry to “calmly begin planning for ‘bunker mode’” in a statement reported by Blockworks on October 8, 2026. The proposal, as described in that report, is a controlled migration of assets to addresses that have not signed transactions, so their public keys remain concealed behind address hashes in the address model being discussed.
This is a risk-management plan, not a wallet setting or a new cryptographic protocol. The proposal does not require buying a new wallet or adopting new cryptography. It also does not establish that a particular physical device or accessory can prevent a hypothetical attack on signature cryptography.

Why public-key exposure matters
Receiving funds may leave a key concealed
For some address formats, an address derived from a public key can be represented on-chain by a hash. If an address has only received funds and has not signed, the public key may not yet be visible on-chain. That can limit the information available to an attacker seeking to derive the private key from the public key.

Signing can reveal the public key
A transaction signature can expose the public key on-chain in the model described in the reporting. Bunker mode therefore favors fresh addresses for long-term holdings and careful management of addresses after signing. This is not a universal property of every blockchain: how keys and addresses are represented depends on the specific network, address format, and transaction type.
A scanner cannot reverse that exposure or make an address safe. Bunker Mode’s site describes its scanner as reading public blockchain data to report whether a key has surfaced; it also says scanning does not protect an address and that its score is not a security guarantee. Its experimental hash-based authorization concepts are described as research, not deployed protection.

What AI has—and has not—changed
The concern is that AI-assisted mathematical work might weaken assumptions used by elliptic-curve signature schemes sooner than expected. That is a possibility raised in public discussion, not evidence of a practical attack on blockchain keys. The reporting reviewed for this topic does not establish that AI has broken ECDSA or produced a working method for recovering wallet private keys.

In a Cointelegraph report on October 8, 2026, Vitalik Buterin cautioned against scrambling to move funds while saying the risks from AI-accelerated mathematics should be taken seriously. He also raised concerns about the security margins of lattice-based cryptography and said Ethereum’s “lean” roadmap had moved toward hash-based approaches. Those comments express concerns and design preferences; they do not show that lattice-based or elliptic-curve cryptography has been defeated.
Should you move crypto to a new wallet now?
The public advice cited here is to plan, not panic. Buterin said, “I don’t recommend anyone scramble to move their funds to new wallets today.” He also warned about the operational danger of migrations, saying he had personally lost more money in botched migrations than in all hacks combined. A transfer can create risks of its own if a person uses the wrong network or address, mishandles keys, or acts on a fraudulent instruction.

Whether an address rotation would help depends on the facts of your specific holdings. Before considering a move, establish:
- Whether the asset’s network and address format keep the public key concealed until signing.
- Whether the relevant address has already signed a transaction and its public key is visible.
- Whether the asset can be transferred to a fresh, compatible address without introducing unacceptable operational risk.
- Whether a proposed cryptographic alternative is actually implemented for that network and has been professionally reviewed.
The reporting does not provide chain-by-chain migration instructions or establish that every asset can safely follow the same procedure. Use current documentation for the exact network, asset, wallet, and address format before taking action; do not treat a general description of bunker mode as a transaction checklist.

Does bunker mode require post-quantum cryptography?
No. The proposal described by Blockworks is based on moving assets to fresh, unexposed addresses and does not require new cryptography. That distinction matters: an address-management precaution and a network-wide change to signature algorithms are different measures.
NIST has published FIPS 205, a stateless hash-based digital-signature standard. Its existence does not mean a blockchain has implemented that standard, that it is a ready-made wallet migration path, or that a user can independently switch an existing address to it. Bunker Mode’s experimental hash-based authorization ideas are likewise not deployed protection, according to the site.
