Coolify is an open-source, self-hostable platform for deploying and managing applications, databases, and other services on servers you control. It provides the platform-as-a-service control layer—builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS, health checks, and operational controls—while Docker on your connected servers runs the workloads.
That makes Coolify a practical alternative for developers who like the workflow of Heroku or Vercel but want to choose the hardware, cloud account, network, and data location themselves. The trade-off is equally important: self-hosting transfers patching, backups, security, capacity planning, and incident response to you. Coolify Cloud manages the Coolify control plane for a monthly fee, but you still provide the servers that run your applications.

Coolify is a graphical control plane for Docker-based infrastructure. You install it on a server, connect additional servers over SSH, and use its web interface to deploy code from a Git repository, Dockerfile, Docker Compose definition, or existing container image. Coolify then builds or pulls the image, starts the container on the selected server, configures routing and HTTPS, and reports health and deployment status.
It is not a conventional shared hosting account and it does not provide the underlying compute by default. With self-hosted Coolify, you bring the machines. The project states that those machines can be a VPS, bare-metal server, Raspberry Pi, or another server that accepts SSH.

How Coolify’s architecture works
The control plane
Your Coolify instance stores application configuration and coordinates actions such as creating deployments, attaching domains, requesting certificates, and checking service health. It is the management layer you log into; it is not normally in the data path for requests to your applications.
Connected workload servers
Coolify connects to selected servers over SSH. Docker runs the application containers, databases, and supporting services on those servers. A single Coolify installation can manage more than one server, allowing you to place workloads on different machines while keeping one operational interface.

How web traffic reaches an application
For HTTP resources, a reverse proxy on the server running the resource receives the request and forwards it to the appropriate container. The Coolify control plane configures and coordinates that proxy; it does not relay your application traffic. This separation means the management server can be isolated from public request traffic, although it still needs to be secured and kept available for deployment and administration.
A deployment from commit to running container
- You select a source, such as GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea, a Dockerfile, a Git-based Docker Compose file, or a prebuilt image.
- Coolify checks out the repository or retrieves the image and determines the build and runtime configuration.
- When a build is required, Docker creates the image. For an existing image, Coolify can pull it instead.
- Coolify starts or replaces the container on the connected server and applies the configured environment, domain, and health-check settings.
- The reverse proxy routes the configured hostname to the running resource. HTTPS can be managed as part of the resource configuration.
- Deployment logs and health information are available through the control plane so you can diagnose a failed build or unhealthy service.
What you can deploy
Coolify is designed for Docker-compatible workloads rather than only one framework or language. The official documentation lists static sites, full-stack applications, databases, and other services.
| Input or resource type | What Coolify does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea repository | Checks out the code and builds and runs it according to the project configuration. | Web applications, APIs, workers, and static sites. |
| Dockerfile | Builds a Docker image from the file, then runs the resulting container. | Projects needing a custom build toolchain or runtime. |
| Git-based Docker Compose definition | Deploys the services described by the Compose configuration. | Multi-container applications and development-style stacks. |
| Existing Docker image | Pulls the image and runs it on a connected server. | Published applications, internal tools, and vendor-neutral services. |
| One-click service template | Creates a preconfigured Docker-compatible service from Coolify’s catalog. | Common infrastructure services and databases. |
Databases and one-click services
The current documentation advertises more than 300 one-click open-source service templates, a figure that can change as the catalog evolves. Examples of supported database engines include PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, and ClickHouse. You should verify the current template, image version, storage settings, and backup approach before putting important data into any service.
Running a database beside an application is one of Coolify’s major differences from application-only platforms. It is also where operational discipline matters most: persistent storage, upgrades, backups, restore testing, memory limits, and network exposure are your responsibility.

Installing Coolify and making a first deployment
Decide where the control plane and workloads will live
Before installing, choose whether one server will host both Coolify and your workloads or whether Coolify will manage separate workload servers. A small single-server setup is simpler; separating the control plane can make isolation and maintenance easier. Neither arrangement automatically supplies high availability.
Check the basic prerequisites
- A server you control that accepts SSH. The project lists VPS instances, bare-metal machines, Raspberry Pi systems, and other SSH-capable servers as possible hosts.
- Administrative access sufficient to install Docker-based services and the Coolify control plane.
- Enough CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity for the applications and databases you intend to run. Coolify does not publish one universal capacity requirement because workload needs differ.
- A plan for persistent storage and backups if you will run databases or stateful services.
- DNS control for any public domain names you want to attach, plus a security plan for the server and management interface.
Run the published installer
The project README publishes this installation command for a supported server:
curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bash
Review the current installation documentation and the script itself before executing it. Installation behavior, supported operating systems, and prerequisites can change; the command is not a substitute for checking the current guidance.
Complete the initial setup
- Open the address exposed by the new Coolify installation and create the administrator account.
- Secure the management endpoint with appropriate authentication, firewall rules, and HTTPS before treating it as a production control plane.
- Add the server that will run your first resource. Coolify uses SSH to connect and manage Docker workloads there.
- Create an application, choose its source, and select the connected server and destination.
- Set environment variables, build or image settings, the listening port expected by the container, and any persistent volumes required by the application.
- Attach a domain if the application is public. Configure DNS to point at the server running the resource, then enable HTTPS through the resource’s proxy settings.
- Deploy and inspect the build and runtime logs. Confirm that the health check succeeds and that the domain reaches the application before adding more services.
The exact labels and fields in the interface can change between releases, so use the current documentation for version-specific screens. The durable workflow is source, server, build or image, runtime configuration, domain, health check, and deploy.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSelf-hosted Coolify versus Coolify Cloud
The two offerings use the same core concept and, according to the project’s official guidance, the same core feature set for deploying and managing applications, databases, and one-click services. The principal difference is who maintains the Coolify control plane.
| Decision point | Self-hosted Coolify | Coolify Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Control-plane software | You install, update, secure, monitor, back up, and restore it. | Coolify operates the managed control plane. |
| Workload servers | You provide and operate them. | You still provide and operate the servers where applications, databases, and services run. |
| Coolify platform fee | Listed as “Free Forever” with full feature access and no platform restrictions. | $5 per month base price for two connected servers, plus $3 per month for each additional server, according to the pricing page accessed October 15, 2026. |
| Operational work removed | None: control-plane maintenance remains yours. | Control-plane maintenance is handled for you; workload patching, capacity, security, backups, and availability remain yours. |
| Data and infrastructure control | You choose where the control plane and workloads run. | You choose workload infrastructure, while the Coolify management service is hosted for you. |
What “free” means for self-hosting
“Free Forever” refers to the Coolify platform subscription. It does not make servers, storage, bandwidth, domain registration, backups, monitoring, or staff time free. A low-cost virtual machine can run a small stack, but databases and production traffic may require more memory, faster storage, redundancy, and a tested recovery plan.

When the Cloud fee is worthwhile
Coolify Cloud can be sensible when your team wants to keep workload servers under its own account but does not want to maintain the management layer. The subscription removes one category of maintenance; it does not turn your server into a fully managed application platform.
How Coolify compares with Heroku and Vercel
Coolify is best understood as a different operating model rather than a promise of identical behavior or reliability. Heroku and Vercel abstract more of the underlying infrastructure. Coolify gives you a similar deployment-oriented interface while leaving the infrastructure decisions with you.

|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure ownership | You supply the servers and decide where workloads and data live. | The provider abstracts most server selection and maintenance. |
| Operations burden | Self-hosted installations require updates, security work, backups, monitoring, and incident response. Cloud removes only Coolify control-plane maintenance. | More of the platform’s patching, networking, and availability work is handled by the provider. |
| Deployment inputs | Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Compose definitions, and existing Docker images. | Workflows depend on each provider’s supported build and runtime model. |
| Workload variety | Applications, static sites, databases, and arbitrary Docker-compatible services. | Service availability and database options follow the provider’s product boundaries. |
| Pricing model | Self-hosted has no Coolify subscription but incurs infrastructure costs; Cloud adds the stated control-plane subscription while you bring servers. | Pricing generally combines provider usage with platform or service charges. |
| Scaling and failover | Multiple servers are possible, but capacity planning, redundancy, backups, and failover architecture are your responsibility. | The provider may supply managed scaling or availability features, subject to its product and plan. |
Do not interpret the comparison as a universal uptime or speed claim. Coolify publishes no official benchmark for deployment speed, uptime, or resource consumption that applies to every workload. Reliability depends on the servers, network, storage, monitoring, and architecture you choose.
Operations you still own
Updates and security
You must keep the operating system, Docker, Coolify, container images, and application dependencies current. Restrict administrative access, use strong credentials and keys, minimize publicly exposed ports, and monitor authentication and deployment activity. A platform interface does not remove the need to harden the host.
Backups and recovery
Back up database data, uploaded files, configuration, and any secrets needed to recreate the stack. Store copies outside the primary server and periodically perform a restore into a separate environment. A deployment that succeeds is not evidence that a backup can be restored.
Capacity and observability
Track CPU, memory, disk space, disk latency, container health, and network behavior at the server and application levels. Leave headroom for builds and traffic spikes. If a server fills its disk or exhausts memory, the control plane cannot manufacture capacity.

High availability and failover
Coolify can connect to multiple servers, but connecting a second server does not by itself create a highly available application. You need an architecture for replicated data, traffic switching, persistent storage, backups, and recovery. The appropriate design depends on the workload and infrastructure provider.
Choosing a host: VPS, bare metal, or Raspberry Pi
VPS
A VPS is a common starting point because it offers a publicly reachable server without requiring you to maintain physical hardware. Select a size based on the actual applications and databases you will run, not only on the Coolify interface. The project’s pricing guidance names providers such as Hetzner, DigitalOcean, and AWS as places users can bring servers; availability and prices vary by region and date.
Bare metal
A dedicated machine can provide predictable resources and local storage, which may suit heavier databases or busy internal services. You still need to handle hardware failure, networking, replacement, and physical or provider-level backups.
Raspberry Pi
Coolify explicitly lists Raspberry Pi as a supported server class. A Raspberry Pi 5 can be a useful low-cost host for a homelab, personal site, or small internal service when workload size, storage reliability, upstream bandwidth, and power protection are appropriate. It is not automatically suitable for a production system that needs provider-grade redundancy or large database capacity.

A Git-based web application
Connect the Git provider, select the repository and branch, configure the build and runtime values, choose a server, and attach the domain. This pattern keeps application source in version control while Coolify handles the repeatable container deployment.
A multi-container Compose stack
Store the Compose definition in a Git repository, provide required environment values and persistent volumes, and deploy it as a unit. Validate service dependencies, internal network names, exposed ports, and data directories before exposing any endpoint publicly.

Use an image registry as the source when another system already builds and tags the image. Define how updates are detected and deployed, pin versions where reproducibility matters, and keep a rollback tag available.
Pitfalls and ways to fix them
Expecting a free hosted service
Self-hosted Coolify is free software, not free infrastructure. If a workload is slow or unavailable, inspect the server’s resources, storage, network, and logs rather than assuming the platform subscription is the cause.
Putting the database on an undersized machine
Databases compete with builds and application containers for memory and disk I/O. Move stateful services to a better-sized server, set appropriate resource limits, and establish tested backups before increasing traffic.
Pointing DNS at the wrong server
The domain must resolve to the server running the resource’s reverse proxy. Check the DNS record, wait for the record’s normal propagation, and confirm that the proxy is listening on the expected public endpoint.
Deploying without persistent storage
Containers are replaceable; data written only inside a container can disappear during recreation. Define persistent volumes for databases and uploads, then verify that a replacement deployment can read the data.
The Tool Desk

A second connected server helps placement and separation but does not replicate your database or switch traffic automatically. Design and test those mechanisms separately.
Skipping control-plane recovery
Document how to reinstall Coolify, restore its configuration, reconnect workload servers, and redeploy applications. Keep this procedure independent of the machine whose failure you are planning for.
Who should use Coolify?
Strong fit
- Developers comfortable with Linux administration, SSH, Docker, and reading logs.
- Teams that want workloads and data on selected infrastructure rather than a provider-defined environment.
- Projects that need databases, workers, queues, or other Docker-compatible services alongside web applications.
- Agencies and homelab operators who want one control plane for multiple servers or clients.
- Organizations seeking to reduce platform lock-in and retain control over deployment artifacts.
Weak fit
- Teams that want a provider to absorb all patching, networking, capacity planning, backups, and incident response.
- Projects without anyone responsible for Linux, Docker, security updates, and recovery testing.
- Systems whose availability requirements exceed what the chosen server and backup architecture can provide.
Bottom line
Coolify delivers the deployment convenience associated with a PaaS while letting you run Docker workloads on infrastructure you choose. Its broad input support, database and service templates, and multi-server control make it more flexible than an application-only deployment workflow. The price of that flexibility is operational ownership: with self-hosting, you are the platform team. Choose self-hosted Coolify when infrastructure control and workload variety justify that responsibility; choose Coolify Cloud when you want the same management model without maintaining the Coolify control plane, while still operating your application servers.
