Chunk persistence is 7 Days to Die’s rule for retaining changes made to a world chunk after players leave it. On a server, the key control is MaxChunkAge: the number of in-game days that must pass after a chunk was last visited before the game may restore that chunk to its original state. The documented default is -1, which disables age-based expiry. A separate setting, SaveDataLimit, can still cause saved chunks to be reset when the save reaches its storage allowance.

What chunk persistence actually controls

A chunk is a section of the generated world that stores more than terrain. Its saved state can include player-built blocks, mined areas, containers, doors, loot changes, vehicles and other modifications made in that area. Persistence determines how long the game keeps that changed state in the save instead of discarding it and regenerating the original world data.

This is a retention rule, not a visibility or loading rule. A chunk can be unloaded from memory when nobody is nearby and still remain fully preserved in the save. Conversely, a player can have a large portion of the map uncovered without that discovery setting deciding how long an altered chunk is retained.

How MaxChunkAge works

MaxChunkAge is the server-side age threshold for an unvisited chunk. The 7 Days to Die server documentation describes it as the number of in-game days that must pass since a chunk was visited before it can reset to its original state, unless the area is revisited or protected by a nearby land claim or bedroll.

  1. A player enters or otherwise visits a chunk.
  2. The game records that visit and the chunk’s modified state remains in the save.
  3. If the chunk is not visited again, its age advances in game days, not real-world days.
  4. When the configured threshold is reached, the server may discard the changed state and regenerate the chunk in its original, generated form.
  5. Revisiting the area before expiry refreshes the visit timing. A qualifying land claim or bedroll provides the documented protection exception.

The setting therefore answers “how long can an unvisited changed chunk be retained under this server policy?” It does not mean that every chunk is rewritten on a precise, visible deadline. Reset processing can depend on when the server evaluates eligible data, and the setting is a permission for age-based cleanup rather than a promise that a reset will happen at an exact wall-clock moment.

Why the timer uses in-game days

If a server advances time quickly, is paused, or runs on a different schedule, real-world calendars do not provide a reliable estimate. The counter is tied to the game’s day progression. For example, “30 days” means 30 in-game days since the last visit, not 30 twenty-four-hour periods outside the game.

What the value -1 means

The current references list -1 as the default or disabled value. With MaxChunkAge=-1, a chunk does not reset merely because it has been unvisited for a configured number of in-game days. This is commonly described as unlimited or disabled age-based persistence, but it only removes that particular expiry path; it does not make the save immune to every possible storage or version-related problem.

Does a base reset when you leave?

Under the age rule alone, leaving a base does not automatically erase it. Whether it can be reset depends first on MaxChunkAge, then on whether the area is protected, and separately on whether the save encounters a storage limit.

Situation Age-based result What to check
MaxChunkAge=-1 The age timer is disabled; no reset occurs solely because the chunk was left unvisited. Check SaveDataLimit and normal save backups.
A positive MaxChunkAge, no visit, no protection The chunk becomes eligible for restoration after the threshold in in-game days. Revisit it or use the documented protection mechanism.
A positive MaxChunkAge, nearby land claim or bedroll The documentation identifies the claim or bedroll as an exception to age-based reset. Confirm the protection object is still present and close enough to qualify.
Save reaches its configured data limit Saved chunks may be reset to free space, even if age expiry is disabled. Review SaveDataLimit and available storage.

“Nearby” is important: the documentation names a land claim or bedroll in close proximity, not an object placed anywhere on the map. The exact effective area can depend on the game version and server implementation, so do not treat a distant claim as guaranteed protection.

Chunk persistence versus loading, map discovery, and reset time

Persistence is not active loading

Loading controls what the server keeps active around players for simulation and performance. Persistence controls whether the saved, modified state survives after the area is no longer active. Unloading a chunk is normal and does not by itself restore the terrain.

Persistence is not map discovery

MaxUncoveredMapChunksPerPlayer limits how much map data a player can uncover and can affect the size of saved, uncovered map information. It is not the chunk-reset timer. Changing that value will not extend the life of a base or prevent an age-based world reset.

Persistence is not the same as “chunk reset time”

People often use “reset time” to mean several different things: the age threshold for an abandoned chunk, the schedule of a server’s cleanup task, or the respawn timing for loot. MaxChunkAge addresses only the first case: when an unvisited chunk becomes eligible to return to its original generated state. It does not set loot respawn intervals, server restart schedules, or the amount of time a chunk remains loaded.

The separate storage limit: SaveDataLimit

SaveDataLimit is a different control from MaxChunkAge. It concerns the saved game’s overall data allowance rather than the age of one abandoned area. If the save reaches that cap, the server may reset saved chunks to free space. Consequently, setting MaxChunkAge to -1 removes age-based expiry but does not guarantee permanent retention when storage pressure triggers another cleanup path.

How to check the setting on a server

The exact menu names differ between dedicated-server software, hosting panels and game releases. The reliable approach is to inspect the server configuration for the setting names themselves rather than relying on a guide written for a different panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server before editing configuration so a running process cannot overwrite your change.
  2. Open the server settings or configuration file and search for MaxChunkAge.
  3. Record the current value. A positive number is an in-game-day threshold; -1 means age-based expiry is disabled in the documented configuration.
  4. Search separately for SaveDataLimit. Do not assume that an unlimited age value also removes the save-size allowance.
  5. If you protect a base with a claim or bedroll, keep the object in the base area and verify that it has not been removed, replaced or invalidated by server rules.
  6. Save the configuration, restart the server, and confirm the value after restart. A hosting panel may require an explicit save or restart before applying edits.
  7. Make a backup of the world save before changing retention settings. If a reset has already happened, changing the value afterward cannot reconstruct the discarded original player modifications.

For single-player games, the available controls and labels are not identical across every release. If the setting is not exposed in the in-game menus, the server-side configuration is the relevant place to investigate; do not infer behavior from a similarly named graphics, map or loading option.

Why a chunk might appear to have reset

The age threshold was reached

Check whether the server uses a positive MaxChunkAge and estimate elapsed in-game days since anyone visited. A player returning after the threshold may find generated terrain where modified blocks once existed.

The protection object did not qualify

A bedroll or land claim protects only under the documented proximity exception. It may not help if it was placed outside the affected chunk, removed, destroyed or otherwise no longer recognized by the current server version.

The save hit its storage allowance

If MaxChunkAge is already -1, investigate SaveDataLimit next. Storage-triggered cleanup is independent of the age timer, so repeatedly revisiting the base will not solve a save that is over its configured allowance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong setting was changed

Map-uncover limits, loaded-area settings and loot respawn settings are often discussed alongside persistence. Verify the exact setting name before troubleshooting; changing MaxUncoveredMapChunksPerPlayer, for example, does not alter chunk retention.

Practical protection plan for bases and routes

  • Check MaxChunkAge before building a long-term base on an unfamiliar server.
  • If the value is positive, revisit critical locations within the in-game-day window or use the documented nearby land-claim or bedroll protection.
  • Ask the administrator which SaveDataLimit policy is in force, especially on a long-running or heavily explored world.
  • Keep independent backups of important saves; no configuration value should be treated as a mathematical guarantee against corruption, administrative cleanup or future-version changes.
  • When reporting a suspected reset, include the server version, the two retention values, the last known visit in in-game days, and whether a claim or bedroll was present.

Bottom line for server administrators

Start with MaxChunkAge. A positive value permits an unvisited chunk to return to its original state after that many in-game days, while -1 disables this age-based expiry. Land claims and bedrolls are the documented protection exception. Then check SaveDataLimit: storage pressure is a separate reason saved chunks may be reset. Keeping those two mechanisms—and map-discovery limits—separate is the key to diagnosing what “chunk persistence” means on a particular 7 Days to Die server.
