Burst mode photography captures a rapid series of still photos while you hold or activate the shutter. Also called continuous shooting, it helps when a subject is moving or the exact moment is hard to predict, giving you several frames to choose from.

What burst mode means

In burst mode, a camera takes successive still images in quick succession instead of making just one exposure each time you press the shutter. The sequence usually continues while the shutter control is held, although the exact controls depend on the camera. Fujifilm calls the feature “Continuous Shooting (Burst Mode)” and describes it as capturing motion in a series of pictures.

When burst mode is useful

Use it when the timing of a photograph is uncertain, especially with moving subjects such as a runner, a jumping pet, or a child in play. A sequence gives you multiple moments to review and choose from; it does not guarantee that every frame will be sharp or perfectly timed. Apple similarly recommends iPhone Burst mode for moving subjects or when you want several high-speed photos to select from.

How to take a burst

On a camera

Look for a drive or shooting mode named continuous, continuous high, continuous low, or burst. Select the desired rate if the camera offers one, then hold the shutter button to capture the sequence. On Fujifilm’s X-T5, for example, you select a high- or low-speed continuous drive mode and a frame-advance rate; the camera keeps shooting until you release the shutter or the memory card is full. Menu names and controls vary by model, so use the camera’s manual for its exact procedure.

On iPhone

  1. Swipe the Shutter button to the left and keep your finger on the screen to start a burst.
  2. Lift your finger to stop taking photos.
  3. Open the burst thumbnail, tap the burst count, select the images you want to keep, and tap Done.

These are Apple’s documented iPhone controls; gestures may differ across devices or software versions.

Why a burst can slow down

A camera’s maximum stated frame rate does not necessarily continue indefinitely. It captures images into a temporary buffer while writing them to the memory card. When that buffer fills, the camera may slow or pause while it clears. Nikon’s Z6III reference guide, for example, says the frame-count display indicates how many pictures can fit in the buffer; once full, it displays r000 and the frame rate drops. The number of frames and the slowdown depend on settings and shooting conditions.

Rate and sequence length can also vary with shutter speed, sensitivity, subject, focus mode, and other settings. Fujifilm notes that rates may slow as more photos are taken and recording time may increase. File format, image quality, and the card can also affect how long the camera takes to finish writing a sequence.

What changes during continuous shooting

Burst mode can affect more than capture speed. Depending on the camera and selected settings, focus or exposure may track between frames, behave differently, or be restricted at certain rates. Flash may not fire in some shooting conditions. Consult the manual for your specific model rather than assuming it maintains focus, exposure, or flash behavior identically throughout a burst.

What to check when comparing burst specifications

If you are comparing cameras, a single frames-per-second figure is not enough to describe real-world burst performance. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and current manual for the conditions attached to each figure, including:
