Bitcoin has not yet adopted a post-quantum consensus upgrade, and no dependable date is known for a quantum computer capable of breaking its signatures. The risk is nevertheless concrete: Bitcoin’s current ECDSA and Schnorr spending paths use public-key cryptography that a sufficiently capable quantum computer could attack. Once a wallet’s public key is exposed on-chain, an attacker could theoretically derive the private key and spend the associated unspent outputs.
A post-quantum migration would therefore be a coordinated change to Bitcoin’s output types, signature rules, wallet software and user holdings. Two Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIP-360 and draft BIP-361) describe different parts of that problem, but neither is an activated consensus rule. For wallet owners, the sensible response today is careful key hygiene, avoiding address reuse, keeping software current and preparing for an eventual network-approved migration—not buying a product merely labeled “quantum-proof.”
What “post-quantum Bitcoin” means
Post-quantum Bitcoin would use transaction outputs and signature mechanisms designed to remain secure against attacks from large-scale quantum computers. The change is not a single wallet setting. It would require Bitcoin protocol support for new quantum-resistant scripts or signature operations, wallet software able to create and sign those outputs, network-wide interoperability and a practical way to move existing coins.

Bitcoin currently accepts spending proofs based on ECDSA and Schnorr signatures. These are public-key systems: a private key creates a signature, while a corresponding public key lets the network verify it. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could use a quantum algorithm to attack the mathematical relationship between a revealed public key and its private key. The result would not be an attack on the blockchain’s history; it would be the ability to forge a valid spend from an exposed key.

That capability is not available today, and no source establishes when a cryptographically relevant quantum computer will exist. Draft BIP-361 repeats a 2027–2030 estimate attributed to McKinsey, but that is an uncertain forecast rather than a Bitcoin deadline or scientific consensus.
Why “migration” is more than replacing a signature algorithm
Bitcoin must preserve ownership while changing the way ownership is proven. A migration has to answer several practical questions:
- What new output or address format will hold post-quantum coins?
- Which signature schemes and opcodes will every validating node recognize?
- How large will signatures and witnesses be, and what will that do to transaction fees?
- How will wallets generate, back up, restore and sign with the new keys?
- What happens to coins whose public keys have already been exposed?
- Will old ECDSA and Schnorr outputs remain spendable indefinitely, or become restricted after a transition period?
Until Bitcoin governance and implementation work answer those questions, “post-quantum Bitcoin” describes a target state, not a product category or live network mode.

What BIP-360 and BIP-361 propose
The two proposals address related but different parts of the transition. Their existence does not mean that Bitcoin has activated either design, that miners and nodes enforce it, or that wallets support it.
| Proposal | Main emphasis | Mechanism described | Status and limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIP-360 | Output and script structure | Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), a script-tree output intended to provide a path for future post-quantum signature opcodes and reduce long-exposure risks. | Proposal only; it does not itself add a post-quantum signature scheme or activate a network rule. |
| BIP-361 | Staged migration and legacy-coin handling | A draft two-phase approach that would first allow movement from legacy scripts to post-quantum scripts, then tighten legacy ECDSA/Schnorr spending. | Draft mechanics, not an approved schedule. The block interval and timing would depend on activation decisions that have not occurred. |
BIP-360’s Pay-to-Merkle-Root idea
BIP-360 proposes committing an output to a Merkleized script tree. The design is intended to let Bitcoin add future post-quantum signature paths without redesigning the entire output model. It also addresses “long-exposure” concerns: an output can commit to spending conditions while keeping unnecessary script details out of the chain until they are used.

P2MR is an architectural proposal, not proof that a particular post-quantum algorithm has been selected. A future implementation would still need consensus-defined signature operations, wallet support, fee analysis and security review.
BIP-361’s staged approach
Draft BIP-361 describes a Phase A in which transactions could move coins from legacy scripts into post-quantum scripts for approximately 160,000 blocks after activation. Its draft Phase B would begin two years after Phase A activation and tighten the rules for legacy ECDSA and Schnorr spending. Those intervals are parameters in a proposal, not a live countdown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA staged design could give holders time to move funds while preserving a later policy for coins that remain in vulnerable outputs. The difficult governance questions include how to treat lost keys, already-exposed public keys, dormant coins and users who cannot upgrade in time. None of those choices has been finalized by Bitcoin consensus.
Why wallet security depends on public-key exposure
The important distinction is not whether a wallet is advertised as modern or hardware-based. It is whether the public key controlling a particular unspent transaction output has been exposed and how quickly a future attacker could act.
| Output situation | Exposure profile | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Public key hidden behind a hashed address and never spent | The chain does not yet show the full public key for that output. | It has a different, generally lower exposure profile than an output whose key is already revealed, but it is not a permanent guarantee against every future attack. |
| Output already spent from, or an address type that reveals the public key | The public key is visible on-chain. | A future quantum-capable attacker could target the associated private key directly. |
| Address reused for multiple receipts or spends | The same key material may be exposed repeatedly and associated with more funds. | Reuse can increase the amount that would need to be migrated and makes transaction history easier to correlate. |
Address reuse is therefore a quantum-risk issue as well as a privacy and operational issue. Generate a fresh receiving address for each payment when your wallet supports it, and do not keep adding funds to an address whose public key has already been revealed by a spend.

Hardened derivation is not a quantum shield
Draft BIP-361 discusses hardened BIP-32 derivation as a possible knowledge asymmetry in rescue protocols. In some circumstances, a user may hold information that helps recover or migrate funds while an attacker who only sees chain data does not. This is proposal text, not a guaranteed defense. Hardened derivation cannot turn an unapproved rescue mechanism into an established Bitcoin security feature, and it does not remove the need to protect seeds and signing devices.
How NIST’s post-quantum standards fit in
The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized three principal post-quantum cryptography standards on August 13, 2024:
| Standard | Algorithm family | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| FIPS 203 | ML-KEM | Key establishment, rather than transaction signatures. |
| FIPS 204 | ML-DSA | Digital signatures designed to resist future quantum-computer attacks. |
| FIPS 205 | SLH-DSA | Stateless hash-based digital signatures designed for the same threat class. |
NIST says organizations should begin applying these standards and inventory vulnerable cryptography now. Its migration guidance identifies cryptographic inventory, risk management, interoperability and benchmarking as core workstreams. That advice is relevant to Bitcoin infrastructure operators, exchanges and wallet developers, but NIST standardization does not automatically select a Bitcoin signature scheme. Bitcoin still needs its own opcode, address, transaction-weight, activation and governance decisions.
What Bitcoin users should do now
- Stop address reuse. Use a new receiving address for each payment where possible. If an address has already been spent from, treat the public key as exposed and avoid leaving unnecessary balances there.
- Protect the complete signing system. Keep seed phrases, private keys, backups and signing devices under strict physical and digital control. A quantum-resistant algorithm would not help if an attacker already obtains the seed.
- Update wallet and node software. Install releases from the software’s official distribution channel and monitor Bitcoin Core, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal and wallet-vendor announcements for an adopted post-quantum output type.
- Document recovery details. Record the wallet’s derivation paths, account structure, address types and backup locations. This documentation can prevent avoidable delays when a real migration tool becomes available.
- Test restoration with small amounts. Verify that a backup can restore the intended accounts on a separate device or test environment before a migration is urgent. Do not expose a seed while using an unfamiliar website or signing application.
- Plan legacy-UTXO handling. Know which outputs are unspent, which have exposed public keys and which wallets control them. Once a standard exists, you may need to consolidate or move selected outputs; planning now reduces the chance of overlooking an old account.
- Reject unsupported “quantum-proof” claims. Do not move funds to a product solely because its marketing uses that phrase. A credible solution must identify the adopted Bitcoin protocol, provide independently reviewable code and interoperate with the network you actually use.
How to evaluate a future post-quantum wallet or upgrade
When Bitcoin has an adopted output type, compare implementations against the protocol rather than against slogans. These are the questions that matter:
- Security assumptions: Which standardized or otherwise specified signature scheme is used, and what are its assumptions against both classical and quantum attacks?
- Consensus compatibility: Is the output recognized by the Bitcoin network you use, or only by a private test environment?
- Signature and witness size: Larger post-quantum signatures could increase transaction weight and fees. Require measured, protocol-specific figures instead of generic claims.
- Hardware and software support: Can the wallet create, display and sign the new output, and can another implementation restore it?
- Recovery behavior: Does a standard seed backup restore the new keys, and are derivation paths documented?
- Interoperability: Can you send to and receive from independent wallets, exchanges and node implementations?
- Migration treatment: Does the tool identify exposed legacy outputs and explain which ones still require action?
- Upgrade governance: Is the rule activated through a documented Bitcoin process, with reviewable code and a clear deployment timeline?
A current hardware wallet can still be useful for isolating keys and enforcing signing checks, but hardware isolation and post-quantum signatures solve different problems. Until Bitcoin adopts a compatible post-quantum output and a device implements it, a hardware wallet should not be described as quantum-resistant merely because the private key stays offline.

A practical migration playbook for the eventual upgrade
Inventory before moving anything
List every wallet, account, derivation path and backup. Separate unspent outputs whose public keys remain hidden from outputs already exposed through spending or address type. Note watch-only wallets and multisignature arrangements as well; a migration cannot succeed if one signer or backup is missing.
Validate the destination format
Wait for a Bitcoin consensus rule and wallet release that explicitly support the new output. Confirm the destination address or script using independent software and a small test transaction. A visually plausible address generated by an unapproved tool is not evidence of network compatibility.
Move funds in controlled batches
Use small amounts first, verify confirmation and recovery, then handle larger groups of outputs. Keep records of transaction IDs and the old outputs that have been emptied. Avoid consolidating every historical output in one transaction if doing so would reveal more key material or create an unnecessary fee burden under the adopted rules.
Retire old backups safely
Do not destroy legacy backups immediately after a successful transfer. Keep them protected until every output is confirmed moved and the migration software’s recovery process has been independently tested. After the transition is complete, follow a documented destruction policy rather than leaving redundant seeds in unsecured locations.

What is still unknown
No dependable source establishes a date for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. No finalized Bitcoin consensus migration, activated BIP-360 output, or shipping consumer hardware wallet with deployed post-quantum Bitcoin signatures is established here. NIST’s standards are real and available, but they do not by themselves define Bitcoin addresses, opcodes, transaction limits or activation rules.

That uncertainty is a reason to prepare, not to panic. The highest-value actions—fresh addresses, disciplined backups, current software and an accurate UTXO inventory—improve security regardless of when quantum computing advances. The decision to move coins into a new format should wait for an adopted Bitcoin standard with interoperable implementations and a published migration procedure.
Common misconceptions
“A quantum computer can steal any Bitcoin today.”
There is no evidence that such a machine currently exists. The issue is a future capability and the time available to migrate exposed outputs before an attacker can exploit them.
“A hidden public key means the coins are permanently safe.”
Keeping a public key hidden changes the exposure profile, but it is not a perpetual guarantee. Future protocol rules, address reuse and spending behavior can reveal key material.
“NIST’s standards mean Bitcoin has already chosen its algorithm.”
NIST standardized general-purpose post-quantum primitives. Bitcoin still has to choose and deploy its own signature integration through its consensus and software process.
“BIP-361’s 160,000 blocks is a deadline.”
That interval belongs to a draft Phase A proposal and would apply only after an activation that has not happened. It is not a current migration timer.
The bottom line
Bitcoin’s quantum concern is fundamentally a wallet-exposure problem: a future quantum attacker could target public keys revealed by existing spending paths. BIP-360 and BIP-361 offer possible foundations for outputs and staged migration, but they are proposals, not live rules. Protect keys, stop reusing addresses, keep an accurate inventory and wait for an adopted, interoperable Bitcoin upgrade before moving funds for quantum reasons.
