Bitcoin mining is the proof-of-work process that proposes the next block of transactions and makes changing the transaction history costly. Miners use specialized hardware to search for a block-header hash below a network-set target; other Bitcoin nodes can verify a successful result. Mining is not a realistic contest for an ordinary home computer, and rewards are not guaranteed income.

What does cryptocurrency mining do?

Mining describes block production in proof-of-work systems. It connects computation to transactions: miners assemble candidate blocks containing valid transactions, then compete to produce proof-of-work for a candidate. The winning block proposes an order for those transactions and links to earlier blocks.

Each Bitcoin block refers to the previous block. Rewriting an older transaction history would therefore require reproducing the work for the affected block and the blocks built after it. Producing proof takes repeated computation; checking a proposed result is comparatively straightforward for other nodes. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains the chain and the work involved in modifying it in its block-chain guide.

People sometimes call mining a lottery. That captures competition and uncertainty, but it can be misleading: the contest is specifically to propose the next block and establish transaction order, not to create coins through unrelated random guessing.

How does Bitcoin mining work, step by step?

  1. A transaction is broadcast. Its owner signs it, and it is shared with the Bitcoin network.
  2. A mining node builds a candidate block. It selects valid transactions and assembles the block data.
  3. Mining software prepares the proof-of-work job. It supplies the hardware with block-header data and the target threshold. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes an 80-byte block header and the hash-target workflow in its mining guide.
  4. Hardware tries hashes. The miner repeatedly hashes the header, changing inputs as needed, until it finds a hash below the target. The target determines how difficult it is to find an acceptable result.
  5. The successful block is broadcast and checked. Other nodes independently verify the proof and the block’s contents before accepting it under network rules.
  6. The miner receives the block’s economic proceeds if accepted. These include the block subsidy and transaction fees, subject to protocol rules. A miner’s chance of finding a block depends on its share of total mining work, so a small solo operation may go a long time without a reward.

Why does Bitcoin mining use specialized hardware?

Bitcoin’s mining workflow uses application-specific integrated circuit hardware, commonly called ASICs. These devices are designed for the hashing work involved in Bitcoin proof-of-work. A general-purpose home computer is not a realistic way to compete for Bitcoin block rewards against specialized mining operations.

An ASIC is only one part of an installation. The device needs electrical capacity suited to its draw, adequate ventilation or cooling, network connectivity, and monitoring. It can produce significant heat and sound. Before buying equipment, compare hash rate, power use or efficiency, cooling needs, noise, electrical requirements, warranty and service, and delivered cost—including shipping or import charges where applicable. These are evaluation factors, not a claim that any particular device has been tested.

Solo mining or joining a pool?

Solo miners keep the proceeds of blocks they find, but their reward timing is highly uncertain when they contribute only a small share of the network’s total work. A pool combines participants’ work and uses submitted “shares” as evidence of the work each participant contributed. If the pool finds a valid block, it distributes proceeds according to its payout method.

Approach How proceeds are handled Main trade-off
Solo mining The miner retains proceeds from blocks it finds. Potentially long and uncertain waits between rewards, especially with a small share of total network work.
Pool mining The pool distributes proceeds when it finds a valid block, according to its payout rules. More shared and rule-dependent payouts; fees, thresholds, timing, custody, and withdrawal terms vary by pool.

A pool can change payout timing and variance; it does not guarantee a profit. Before joining, read the pool’s current fee schedule, payout method and thresholds, custody and withdrawal policies, and operating jurisdiction. Pool terms differ, and the Bitcoin documentation describes the mechanism rather than endorsing a particular operator.

What determines whether mining is profitable?

There is no universal break-even electricity rate or guaranteed return. Mining economics depend on local and changing inputs, not simply on the amount of coin associated with a block. A useful estimate should account for:

  • the hardware’s delivered purchase cost and expected useful life;
  • its power draw, uptime, and the local all-in electricity rate;
  • electrical service, wiring, ventilation or cooling, and monitoring costs;
  • pool fees and payout terms, if applicable;
  • network difficulty and total hash rate, which affect the miner’s odds;
  • the block subsidy and transaction-fee conditions; and
  • the asset’s market price, which can change.

Ethereum’s former mining guide lists hardware, electricity, pool fees, ventilation, energy monitoring, and wiring among possible expenses. Those categories are also useful reminders when assessing a proof-of-work installation; the guide is historical for Ethereum, not a current Ethereum mining manual.

Does Ethereum still use mining?

No. Ethereum switched off proof-of-work in 2022 and now uses proof-of-stake, in which validators secure the network. Ethereum.org states that “Proof-of-work is no longer underlying Ethereum’s consensus mechanism, meaning mining has been switched off.” Its mining page retains information about the former process for historical interest, and its proof-of-work page explains the prior mechanism. ETH staking is not mining: it uses a different consensus mechanism and participant role.

What to know about mining’s energy use

Proof-of-work requires electricity for the competition to produce blocks, and the hardware’s electrical input also becomes heat. Ethereum.org describes proof-of-work as more energy-hungry than Ethereum proof-of-stake. That comparison concerns Ethereum’s mechanisms; it does not establish a current Bitcoin network electricity or emissions figure. No current Bitcoin-wide energy number is given here, so avoid treating an undated estimate or a figure from another network as a current Bitcoin statistic.
