An XRP treasury is XRP managed as part of an organization’s financial resources. A personal XRP wallet is an individual’s way to access XRP. The asset is the same; what changes is who controls access, how transfers are approved, and how balances and activity are managed and recorded.

“XRP treasury” describes an organizational use of the asset, not a special XRP Ledger wallet type. Holding XRP in a company treasury does not by itself mean the company uses XRP for payments, earns income from it, uses a particular provider, or has a particular legal or accounting status.

What an XRP treasury means

A treasury is the function through which an organization manages financial resources, such as cash, investments, and liquidity. When XRP is part of those resources, the company may need processes to control access, approve transfers, track balances, value the position, and reconcile activity with its records. Ripple describes digital-asset treasury management as integrating blockchain-based assets into corporate treasury operations alongside fiat assets; that is the vendor’s description of its product area, not a universal definition or requirement. XRP is native to the XRP Ledger (XRPL), but the term “treasury” does not identify a different token or imply a particular use of XRP. An organization might hold XRP as an asset allocation without using it to pay suppliers or operate a payment service. XRPL: About XRP

That distinction matters because a balance alone does not explain why an organization holds XRP or what it does with it. “Treasury” describes the organizational context and the processes around a holding. It is not evidence that XRP generates income, that the organization uses Ripple products, or that it operates an XRP-based payments business. Claims about a particular company’s holdings or use should be supported by that company’s own filing or announcement.

How a company treasury differs from a personal wallet

The main difference is the surrounding control system. An individual using a non-custodial wallet controls the secret keys and must protect them. A company treasury adds organizational decisions: who may access keys, who can propose or approve a transfer, which custody arrangement to use, and how the activity enters financial records.

Question Personal non-custodial wallet Corporate XRP treasury
Who controls access? The individual controls the secret keys. It may be a custodian, company-controlled infrastructure, or a combination of authorized roles, depending on the setup.
Who authorizes transfers? Usually the wallet holder. Company policy may require designated initiators, approvers, or other role-based controls.
What happens if access is lost? The XRPL wallet guide says lost keys leave the user locked out with no recovery option. Recovery depends on the custody design and documented procedures; it should not be assumed without provider-specific evidence.
How are balances and activity recorded? The holder may track balances personally. Treasury workflows may consolidate transaction data, valuations, and records for finance teams.
What are the operational risks? Key, device, or recovery-information loss or compromise. Key loss or compromise, provider and process risks, failed authorization controls, and reconciliation or accounting errors.

The XRPL wallet guide distinguishes custodial and non-custodial arrangements. With self-custody, the holder has direct key control and responsibility. With a custodial service, the provider controls the keys; it may offer account recovery, but the holder depends on that provider and may be subject to its platform limits. So when asking, “Who holds my keys?”, distinguish between the wallet or interface used to view an account and the arrangement that actually controls the keys. A personal wallet can be self-custodial or custodial. A company may also choose among different key-control arrangements. The phrase “corporate treasury” does not reveal which model is in place; the organization’s custody agreement and documented controls do.

How corporate XRP treasury operations fit together

Custody determines who controls the keys

A company can use a third-party custodian, company-controlled key infrastructure, or a defined combination. Institutional custody arrangements may support controls such as role-based approvals and key-management approaches including hardware security modules (HSMs) or multi-party computation (MPC). These are possible design choices, not features every company must use. The SEC-filed Bitwise XRP ETF annual report, for example, describes a trust with segregated XRP accounts and a named custodian. That is evidence of one trust’s arrangement, not a template or rule for operating companies. Bitwise XRP ETF annual report filed with the SEC

These options involve different trade-offs rather than a universal best answer. Self-controlled infrastructure can leave key control with the organization, but then the organization must define and operate its own security, authorization, and recovery processes. A custodian may provide an institutional custody arrangement and related controls, but it also introduces dependence on that provider and its service terms, technology, and availability. A combined setup may allocate responsibilities between company personnel and a provider. The available sources do not establish that any one model is required for every company.

Treasury software organizes balances and activity

A treasury-management system and a custodian do different jobs. Software may display balances, apply valuations, record transactions, and support approval workflows. A custodian or key-control design determines who safeguards or controls access to the assets. A company should assess these as separate parts of its arrangement, even when a product brings them together in one interface.

Ripple announced on April 1, 2026, that its Ripple Treasury product had launched Digital Asset Accounts and Unified Treasury capabilities. Ripple says these capabilities can show XRP and RLUSD balances alongside cash within a shared account structure, provide real-time fiat valuations and automated transaction records, and connect customers to multiple digital-asset custodians. These are dated claims about Ripple’s own offering; Ripple says availability varies by geography and different Ripple entities may provide services depending on the product and location. Ripple’s April 1, 2026 announcement

The distinction is practical: a platform that presents a balance and its valuation is not necessarily the party holding the keys. Likewise, connecting to a custodian through treasury software does not make the software and custodian interchangeable. When evaluating a product, ask which functions it performs, which parties control keys, and how transactions and approvals are represented in the records. Check current availability in the relevant geography rather than assuming a launched feature can be used everywhere.

Finance processes complete the picture

After deciding who controls the keys and what systems present the information, the organization still needs procedures for valuing holdings, reconciling transaction records, handling exceptions, and reporting internally. A treasury workflow may bring together a balance, its fiat valuation, transaction history, approvals, and the company’s own accounting records. Those steps help explain why organizational recordkeeping is a major difference from a personal wallet, where an individual may simply track a balance for themselves.

The specific requirements depend on the organization and its circumstances. The available sources do not establish one universal legal, accounting, or regulatory treatment for companies that hold XRP. A company should not infer its reporting obligations from another entity’s filing or from a vendor’s product description; it should consult advisers familiar with its jurisdiction and circumstances.

What organizational examples do—and do not—show

The Bitwise filing illustrates that an organization can hold XRP through formal accounts and third-party custody. It concerns an investment trust, not an operating company’s treasury, and does not establish how other entities must hold or report XRP.

Likewise, Ripple’s product launch shows one vendor’s approach to displaying digital assets alongside cash and connecting to custodians. It does not show that every company needs such a platform, that a customer’s XRP is being used for payments, or that the product is available in every jurisdiction. Claims about a specific company’s XRP holdings or use require that company’s own filing or announcement.

The same caution applies to market claims. In Ripple’s April 1, 2026 announcement, Renaat Ver Eecke, SVP of Ripple Treasury, said: “Digital assets have arrived at the CFO’s desk, and the question has shifted from whether to engage to how to do so advantageously without disrupting existing operations,”. Mark Johnson, VP of Global Product at Ripple Treasury, said: “The design principle behind both capabilities is that digital assets should behave exactly like cash within the platform,”. These are attributed vendor statements about Ripple’s product and its market framing, not independent findings or proof that an organization should adopt a particular asset.

Personal self-custody: control and recovery trade-offs

Self-custody gives an individual control of the keys and direct authority over wallet activity, but it also makes the individual responsible for keeping keys and recovery information safe. According to the XRPL wallet guide, there is no recovery option if the keys are lost. A custodial service can simplify account access and may provide recovery, but the provider holds the keys and can restrict actions under its platform rules. XRPL: Choose a wallet

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes “What happens if I lose my wallet keys?” a central question, not a minor technical detail. In a non-custodial setup, the XRPL guide says lost keys leave the user locked out; the user should not assume a wallet provider can restore access. In a custodial setup, any account-recovery option depends on that service, and the user remains subject to the provider’s controls and limits. Check the exact recovery process before choosing a service or device.

A hardware wallet is a physical-device category for storing keys that can be disconnected when not in use, as described in XRPL documentation. It does not remove the need to protect recovery information. Before choosing any device, check current XRP compatibility and understand its recovery process; availability and supported features can change. XRPL: Key management

For an individual, the basic comparison is therefore not simply “device versus app.” It is who controls the keys, what happens if access is lost, and how much dependence on a provider the holder is willing to accept. Hardware products may be relevant for someone considering self-custody, but compatibility and recovery details must be checked for the specific product. The sources do not support endorsing a particular model.

Questions a company should resolve before holding XRP

There is no single custody model established as mandatory for all companies by the cited sources. Before adopting a model, a finance and security team can use these questions to identify what needs to be decided:

  • Who controls the keys: the company, a custodian, or both under a documented arrangement?
  • Who can initiate and approve transfers, and how are exceptions authorized and recorded?
  • What is the recovery plan if credentials are lost, key staff are unavailable, or a provider is disrupted?
  • How will balances be valued and transactions reconciled with finance and accounting records?
  • What risks arise from the custodian, technology, geography, counterparties, and internal processes?
  • Does the proposed product support the organization’s jurisdiction and governance requirements?

A practical way to apply those questions is to work through the decision in sequence: first define the intended role of XRP in the organization’s financial resources; then select the custody and key-control model; document who can initiate, approve, and handle exceptions; determine how recovery and provider disruption are addressed; and decide how valuations and transaction records will be reconciled with internal finance records. Finally, verify that the chosen service is available in the relevant geography and suits the organization’s governance needs. This is a planning framework, not a regulatory checklist or a claim that every company must follow the same procedure.

Because legal, accounting, and security requirements vary by entity and jurisdiction, companies should make those decisions with advisers familiar with their circumstances rather than treat another organization’s custody structure as a universal rule.

What Ripple’s 2026 survey figure can—and cannot—tell you

In its April 1, 2026 product announcement, Ripple reported that 72% of more than 1,000 global finance leaders surveyed said they must offer a digital-asset solution to remain competitive. This is Ripple’s report of its own survey, not an independent measure of adoption, and it concerns digital assets generally rather than demand for XRP specifically. Ripple’s April 1, 2026 announcement

The figure can be useful as context for how Ripple presents interest among finance leaders, but it should not be read as evidence that 72% of companies hold XRP, that they plan to do so, or that a company needs to offer a digital-asset solution. No independent statistic on how common XRP treasuries are is stated here. Treating the survey as an XRP adoption measure would go beyond what Ripple reported.

Who holds the keys in a corporate XRP treasury?

That depends on the arrangement. Key control may sit with a third-party custodian, company-controlled infrastructure, or a defined combination. The term “treasury” alone does not tell you which model is used.

What happens if I lose the keys to a non-custodial XRP wallet?

The XRPL wallet guide says lost keys leave the holder locked out with no recovery option. With a custodial service, recovery depends on that provider’s process and terms.

Does a company have to use a third-party custodian to hold XRP?

The cited sources do not establish a universal requirement. Third-party custody and company-controlled key infrastructure are examples of different possible models; a company’s decision should account for its circumstances and advisers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does holding XRP in a treasury mean a company uses it for payments or earns income?

No. A treasury holding may simply be an asset allocation. It does not by itself establish payment use, income, a particular provider relationship, or a legal or accounting status.

Is treasury software the same as custody?

No. Treasury software may present balances, valuations, transaction records, and approvals. A custodian or key-control design determines who safeguards or controls access to the assets, even if the functions appear in one interface.

Can I use a hardware wallet for XRP?

XRPL documentation describes hardware wallets as physical devices for storing keys, but check the specific product’s current XRP compatibility and recovery process before choosing it. A hardware wallet does not eliminate the need to protect recovery information.

The Bottom Line

An XRP treasury is an organization’s way of managing XRP within its broader financial resources; a personal wallet is an individual’s way of accessing the same asset. The meaningful differences are key control, transfer approvals, recovery, provider dependence, valuation, and recordkeeping. Treasury software and custody are separate functions, and neither a company holding nor a vendor product implies a particular payment use or universal legal treatment. Individuals should understand the key-recovery trade-off; organizations should document their custody, approval, recovery, and reconciliation choices with advisers suited to their circumstances.
