An internet search engine is a software service that helps people find information online. It discovers web content, organizes what it finds in an index, and returns results it considers relevant to a query. It does not search every page on the live internet each time you enter a query.
What is an internet search engine?
A search engine is a tool for retrieving information from the web. It uses software to find online content and organize it so the service can return useful results when someone searches. The internet is the network and content; a search engine is one way to find some of that content.
Search engines may show more than links, but their central purpose is to connect a query with relevant information. The MDN Web Docs glossary describes a search engine as a tool that searches the web for content matching a user’s query: MDN Web Docs: Search engine.
How does a search engine work?
A useful model has three stages: crawling and discovery, indexing, and serving and ranking results. The stages describe a common process, not a guarantee that every web page passes through all of them.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
1. Crawling and discovering pages
Automated programs, often called crawlers, find URLs and visit pages they can access. They may discover other pages by following links. A website can also provide a sitemap that lists URLs for crawlers to find. Google describes its own crawlers as software that explores the web to find pages for its index; that is an explanation of Google’s service, not a universal specification: Google Search Central: How Google Search works.
There is no central registry containing every web page. Technical barriers and site-owner settings can limit crawler access, and a search engine may not find every URL.

2. Analyzing and indexing content
After accessing a page, a search engine can analyze its content and organize information in an index, a database used to retrieve material later. Crawling does not guarantee that a page will be added to the index. Search.gov explains that search engines may not index every page they crawl: Search.gov: How Search Engines Index Your Website.

When you submit a query, the service looks through its index and selects and orders results it considers relevant. Google says its ranking systems may consider factors such as the query’s words, relevance and usability, source expertise, location, and settings. These are examples of Google’s approach; other search engines need not use the same factors or weigh them the same way. See Google’s explanation of ranking results.

Does a search engine search the entire internet?
No. A search engine returns results from material its systems have discovered and organized, rather than scanning every live page whenever a query is entered. Some pages may not be found, may not be accessible to a crawler, or may not be included in the index. Even an indexed page is not guaranteed to appear for every query: the engine still has to select and rank results for that particular search.
Google’s overview of its process notes that not all pages pass through every stage. Search.gov likewise cautions that engines do not necessarily crawl every page or index everything they crawl: Google: Organising information.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Is every search engine the same?
No. Crawling, indexing, and serving results are a useful general model, but services can differ in what they discover and index, how they present results, and which signals or settings influence ranking. Google’s public documentation is useful for understanding Google Search, but its specific ranking details should not be assumed to describe every provider.
