An initial program load (IPL) is the startup procedure that loads an operating system into memory and starts it running. In IBM z/OS, the procedure also initializes system components, the master scheduler, and subsystems so the system can begin work.

What does initial program load mean?

IBM defines an IPL as the initialization procedure that causes z/OS to begin operating. In practical terms, system programs are loaded into storage and executed, bringing the operating system into operation. IBM’s z/OS glossary lists boot and load as synonyms for IPL. IBM’s z/OS glossary

The term is most strongly associated with IBM mainframes. It describes an operating-system startup process, not one universal set of steps shared by every computer platform.

What happens during a z/OS IPL?

For z/OS, IPL is more than copying the operating system into memory. IBM describes a sequence that initializes the system and storage, creates system component address spaces, and then initializes the master scheduler and subsystems. These stages prepare the operating system and its services to handle work. IBM’s overview of the z/OS IPL process

Does IPL mean the same thing on every IBM system?

No. IBM uses IPL terminology for more than one platform, but the details depend on the system.

  • z/OS: IPL loads operating-system code into real storage and runs the initialization sequence.
  • IBM i: The startup sequence loads system programs from a designated source device and checks system hardware. IBM i: Starting the system
  • LPAR references: Broadcom documentation treats the LOAD and IPL commands as synonymous, while distinguishing CCW-based and list-directed SCSI load operations. Those command and device details apply to the documented LPAR context, not to every IPL. Broadcom: LOAD (IPL)—IPL an LPAR

How is IPL related to booting?

For z/OS, boot is a glossary synonym for IPL. Both describe starting an operating system; IPL is the established term in IBM mainframe documentation. The word does not mean that all platforms use the same loading mechanism or initialization sequence.
