An extraction shooter sends you into a dangerous area to gather loot or pursue objectives, then asks you to get out alive with what you found. In ARC Raiders, the threats are both hostile machines and other players, and the gear and resources you bring back can help prepare you for later runs. That makes the decision to keep exploring or extract part of the challenge—not just a question of who wins a firefight.
What is an extraction shooter?
An extraction shooter is a game built around entering a dangerous map, collecting value, and attempting to leave through an extraction point. The run has stakes because surviving can secure the loot you gathered, while a failed extraction may cost you carried equipment and the chance to bring home new finds. The exact rules differ between games; there is no single formal definition that every title follows.
The key idea is the risk-and-return loop. You decide what equipment to take in, what is worth collecting, how much danger to accept, and when the haul is valuable enough to leave. A fight can be only one part of a run. If you survive it but then lose the chance to extract, the encounter may not have helped you reach your larger goal.

This changes the meaning of success compared with a match focused mainly on winning a firefight. Combat skill matters, but so do judgment, survival, and the choice to stop pushing your luck. The risk of losing carried gear or unbanked loot gives players a reason to weigh continuing against leaving.

How an ARC Raiders run works
ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a lethal future Earth. Raiders leave the underground community of Speranza for the surface, where they scavenge resources and equipment while facing ARC machines and rival Raiders. The broad loop runs from preparation, to a dangerous surface trip, to extraction and the use of returned loot in the workshop.
- Prepare in Speranza. Use the workshop to craft, repair, or upgrade gear before heading topside. What you bring affects what you risk if the run goes badly.
- Explore and gather. Search the surface for useful equipment and resources, and pursue objectives. As you find more, you must decide whether to keep looking or try to leave with what you have.
- Respond to threats. ARC machines create PvE danger, while other Raiders can fight, avoid you, or cooperate temporarily. Noise from a fight may attract players beyond the immediate encounter.
- Choose when to extract. Getting out safely preserves the value of the haul. A failed run can cost equipment you carried in as well as the opportunity to bring newly found loot home, according to Xbox Wire’s launch preview.
- Put returned loot to use. Loot can be sold, used for crafting, or contribute to workshop improvements and character progression, helping you prepare for later runs.
Extraction is therefore not an escape from the game as a whole. It is the end of one surface run: return to Speranza, make use of what you brought back, and prepare for another trip.
What makes ARC Raiders’ extraction loop different from a simple firefight?
Two kinds of threat share the map
ARC Raiders is PvPvE: the player-versus-environment danger of ARC machines exists alongside the player-versus-player danger of rival Raiders. A machine encounter is not necessarily isolated from human opponents. PlayStation’s overview warns that battle noise can draw other Raiders, so fighting may create a second problem even if you handle the first one successfully.
Other players are not automatically a predictable enemy. The official game description and platform coverage establish that Raiders can encounter both machines and people; Xbox Wire’s launch preview described interactions that included friendliness and betrayal. That preview reported sessions ranging from quiet scavenging to repeated firefights, not a guarantee that every current match will play out in any particular way.
Loot connects one run to the next
The surface trip feeds a longer progression loop. Returned loot can support selling, crafting, repairs, workshop station improvements, blueprint learning, and skill development. The available descriptions establish these as progression paths, but do not specify that every item serves every purpose. In practical terms, the run is not simply a self-contained contest: what you bring home can affect what you can do later.
That connection also clarifies why extracting matters. A full bag is not the same as secured progress; you need to return with the value you want to preserve. Conversely, the decision to leave early can be sensible if you value protecting a useful haul more than taking another uncertain risk. This is a decision principle implied by the game’s described stakes, not a promise that any particular amount of loot guarantees a better outcome.

Solo play is still online multiplayer
PlayStation describes the game as online and multiplayer-only, while supporting a solo Raider or groups of two or three. Solo entry is therefore a way to play without a party, not an offline campaign or protection from the multiplayer environment. The available descriptions do not establish that solo players are placed only with other solo players.
How to think through the risk of a run
For a newcomer, the useful question is not simply “Can I win this fight?” It is “What am I trying to secure, what am I risking, and is continuing worth that risk?” The sources describe the stakes and the loop, but do not prescribe one correct strategy for every situation. These questions translate that loop into a practical decision framework without assuming specific map routes or item values.
- Before deploying: Consider what you are bringing and what losing it would mean to you. Preparation takes place in Speranza, where gear can be crafted, repaired, or upgraded.
- While exploring: Keep track of the value you have already gathered and whether taking another risk serves your objective. A successful encounter does not remove the need to extract.
- When you hear or start a fight: Remember that noise can draw other Raiders. The immediate opponent may not be the only consequence of engaging.
- When another Raider appears: Do not assume the encounter must become a fight, but do not treat temporary friendliness as a guarantee either. The launch preview documents both friendly and hostile outcomes.
- If you are learning or struggling: Xbox Wire’s launch preview described free loadouts as a lower-risk way to enter a raid, with no risk of loss for those loadouts. The source does not establish every current condition or availability detail for them.
This is why extraction games can reward restraint as much as aggression. A player who chooses to leave with a modest haul may preserve more value than one who keeps exploring until a preventable risk ends the run. That is not a universal rule to extract as soon as you find anything; it is a reminder that the run’s goal includes getting home.
Is ARC Raiders PvP or PvE?
It includes both. ARC machines are PvE threats, and other players can create PvP encounters during the same surface run. The balance you experience may vary from a quiet scavenging trip to one with several firefights; Xbox Wire’s description came from a launch preview and should not be read as a prediction for every match today.
The limited PvE matchmaking test in October 2026
As of October 13, 2026, the official ARC Raiders site says a PvE matchmaking toggle is being tested from October 13 at 11:00 CEST through October 20 at 11:00 CEST. This is a limited test window. The announcement does not establish that a permanent PvE-only mode is available, or that the test will become a lasting option.

GamesRadar reported on October 9 that executive producer Aleksander Grøndal characterized the test as a way to answer an ongoing question. The report says he described a future split into PvPvE and PvE experiences as “very possible.” That describes a possibility, not a confirmed roadmap commitment. Players should distinguish the announced test from a permanent mode and from a settled plan for the game’s future.

What to expect—and not to assume—before playing
| Question | What the available descriptions establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Can you play alone? | Yes. A solo Raider is supported, as are parties of two or three. | Solo play is not described as offline, and the descriptions do not say solo players are matched only with other solo players. |
| Can you lose gear? | Xbox Wire’s launch preview says a failed encounter can cost equipment brought into a raid and the chance to bring newly gathered loot home. It also describes free loadouts as having no risk of loss. | The preview does not specify every current loss rule or condition for free loadouts. |
| Are other players always hostile? | No fixed behavior is established; the game has player encounters, and the launch preview reported friendliness as well as betrayal. | One preview cannot predict how other players will act in a particular current match. |
| Is there a permanent PvE-only mode? | The official site announced a PvE matchmaking toggle test for October 13–20, 2026, using the stated CEST start and end times. | The announcement does not confirm a permanent PvE mode or a future PvP/PvE split. |
Who is likely to enjoy an extraction shooter?
The format may suit players who enjoy making decisions under uncertainty, where collecting more can be rewarding but also raises the stakes of getting out. It may also appeal to people who like progression that carries across runs through crafting, equipment, workshop improvements, or skills. These are qualities of the loop described for ARC Raiders, not a claim that every player will find the tension enjoyable.
If you are comparing whether this style is for you, useful questions include how much carried gear is at risk, how easily you can avoid PvP, how demanding the PvE threats are, how much progress persists after a failed run, and whether solo means online solo or offline play. For ARC Raiders, the descriptions support solo entry but online-only play, mixed machine and player threats, and ongoing progress through loot, crafting, workshop upgrades, and skills. They do not settle every comparison, such as exactly how often a player can avoid other Raiders.
It may be a less comfortable fit if you want every match to be a straightforward contest where the result is determined only by combat, or if you expect a solo option to mean an offline experience. In ARC Raiders, the possibility of other Raiders is part of the online multiplayer setting, and the run’s outcome includes whether you return with your haul.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsARC Raiders blends extraction-shooter tension with an adventure setting, as the official site puts it. Its description invites players to extract valuable loot while exploring a lethal world, but the practical loop is simple: prepare in Speranza, head into a world threatened by machines and people, decide how much risk to accept, and try to return with something that can help in the next run.
Where can you play it?
The official site links to Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW. Steam and PlayStation also list the game. Store availability and offers can vary by platform, region, and date, so check the relevant store for current details rather than relying on an old price. A gaming headset is an optional accessory for online multiplayer, not a stated requirement; no current official listing identifies a best model or establishes a game-specific performance advantage.

Do you lose gear when you die?
Xbox Wire’s launch preview says a failed encounter can mean losing equipment brought into the raid and the chance to bring newly gathered loot home. It also describes free loadouts as having no risk of loss, though the preview does not establish every current condition or rule for them.
Does extraction mean escaping the whole game?
No. It means returning from a particular surface run with the haul you want to secure. Back in Speranza, loot can be sold or used for crafting, repairs, workshop improvements, and progression before a later run.
The Bottom Line
ARC Raiders is an online PvPvE extraction adventure: prepare in Speranza, scavenge among machine and player threats, then try to extract with your haul. The key decision is not only whether to fight, but how much risk is worth taking before you head back.
