An Android recovery image is bootable software that starts a phone’s recovery environment, often to handle an over-the-air (OTA) update. It is not necessarily a separate file named recovery.img or a dedicated partition: how it is packaged depends on the device, Android version and update design.
What does an Android recovery image do?
The recovery image contains the software needed to boot into Android’s recovery environment. That environment can perform recovery work such as processing an OTA update. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) explains that the bootloader must be able to access a recovery RAM disk during boot for OTA updates: Implement OTA updates.
“Recovery image” refers to the bootable software, not necessarily to one particular file or partition. A device may package recovery resources separately or include them in boot-related images.
Is a recovery image the same as recovery mode?
No. Recovery mode is the environment the device runs after booting recovery software. A recovery image is one way that software is packaged. The image may be in a dedicated recovery partition, or its resources may be integrated into other boot-related images, depending on the device design.

Where is the recovery image stored?
There is no single location that applies to every Android device. AOSP describes both dedicated recovery partitions and designs that carry recovery resources in boot-related ramdisks: Partitions overview.
- Dedicated recovery partition: Some devices store a recovery image in its own partition.
- Integrated ramdisk: Other devices package recovery resources with
boot,init_bootorvendor_boot. The specific arrangement depends on the Android release and device configuration. See AOSP’s Generic boot partition documentation.
Older ramdisk guidance covers Android 11 and lower; for Android 12 and later, AOSP directs readers to the generic boot documentation. Partition names alone are therefore not enough to identify a device’s layout.

How do A/B updates affect recovery?
A/B, or seamless, update designs can use recovery resources packaged as a ramdisk in a boot-related image rather than requiring a separate recovery partition. AOSP says devices supporting A/B updates should use recovery as boot instead of a separate recovery partition: Recovery images.

AOSP says recovery on these devices should be self-sufficient so an interruption during an update does not leave recovery out of sync with system components that have already changed. Recovery DTBO or ACPIO image sections can carry overlay information alongside the recovery image. AOSP documents this behavior in its OTA implementation guidance and recovery image documentation.

A dedicated recovery partition is a documented arrangement for older non-A/B update designs, not a universal description of modern Android. AOSP labels that non-A/B update methodology deprecated in its Non-A/B system updates documentation.
Can you use any recovery image on an Android phone?
No. Recovery images are built for particular device configurations, and Android version and boot-image layout affect what they contain and where they belong. AOSP’s documentation distinguishes layouts by update scheme, Android release, boot header and build configuration; an image for one device should not be assumed compatible with another.

Before downloading, extracting or flashing a recovery image, identify the exact device model and use a trusted source specific to that device. The partition name or a similar Android version is not sufficient to establish compatibility.
What does recovery.img mean?
recovery.img is a common filename for a recovery image, but the name does not prove that a device has a standalone file or partition with that name. Some devices integrate recovery resources into boot-related images instead. To determine a particular phone’s layout, consult its device-specific documentation and the relevant Android-version guidance.
