An AI music generator is software that uses a prompt or another input, such as audio, to create or transform music. Depending on the service and its settings, it may produce an instrumental, a vocal track with lyrics, or a complete song. The term describes a broad category of tools, not one model or a fixed set of features.
What does an AI music generator do?
At its simplest, the software turns a musical idea into audio. You might describe a style, mood, subject, or sound you want, then ask the service to generate a track. Some tools also accept audio as a starting point or let you continue, transform, or edit an existing result.
Google DeepMind describes its Lyria 3 model as “a music generation system capable of synthesizing high-quality audio from a text prompt.” That is the vendor’s description of Lyria 3, not a universal technical definition of every music generator. Google DeepMind’s Lyria 3 model card and Suno’s AI Music Generator page illustrate how text and, in Suno’s case, audio can be used in a music-making workflow.
How does the generation process work?
- Provide an input. Enter a description of the music you want, or use an audio input if the service supports it.
- Generate a result. The service produces audio based on the request and the controls it offers.
- Refine or use the audio. Depending on the product, you may be able to request changes, transform or continue the track, edit it, or export it.
This describes the user-facing workflow; it does not explain how every model is trained or how its internal architecture works. Features beyond generation vary by product. For example, Suno lists browser-based arrangement and layering, vocal removal, stem export, voice recording, covers, mashups, and samples. Those are examples of Suno’s offerings, not standard capabilities across all generators.

What kinds of music can it make?
Outputs vary with the service and its settings. A tool may generate instrumental audio, vocals, lyrics, or a complete song. Some services emphasize prompt-to-track generation, while others also provide ways to work from audio or edit a result. Before choosing a service, check whether its inputs, output types, creative controls, and editing or export options fit what you need.
What should you know before publishing AI-generated music?
Copyright and permission to use a track are separate questions
Typing a prompt does not automatically establish that you own copyright in the resulting song. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2025 summary says generative-AI output may be protected when a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. The Copyright Office’s summary concerns U.S. copyright law.

Service terms may separately address ownership or permission for commercial use. Suno’s help page, edited September 4, 2026, explains that its terms vary by plan and cautions that music generated solely by AI may not qualify for U.S. copyright protection. Disclosure requirements depend on where you publish
YouTube Help tells music partners to disclose generative-AI use in relevant music content; its examples include entering a prompt into a music generator and downloading the track. That is YouTube guidance, not a rule for every distributor or publishing platform. Check the requirements of each service where you upload or distribute music. Provenance tools are product-specific
Google DeepMind says audio generated or published through Lyria can carry SynthID watermarks that are imperceptible to listeners and detectable with its technology. This describes Google’s system; it does not establish that every AI-generated track is watermarked or that every platform can identify one. Google DeepMind’s SynthID page describes the technology.

- Inputs: Does it accept text, audio, or both?
- Outputs: Can it make the kind of audio you need, such as instrumentals, vocals, lyrics, or full songs?
- Creative control: Can you specify style and performance details to the degree your project requires?
- Editing and export: Does it let you revise, transform, arrange, separate stems, or export in a usable format?
- Terms: What do the service’s current terms say about ownership and commercial use, and how do those terms differ from copyright protection?
- Publishing and provenance: Do your intended platforms require disclosure, and does the service offer any provenance feature?
There is no single set of features or rights that follows from the label “AI music generator.” Evaluate the specific service and the rules that apply to your intended use.
