AmneziaVPN is a free, open-source, multi-protocol VPN client that can configure a VPN server you own or rent. In the self-hosted workflow, the app connects to a compatible Linux server over SSH, installs Docker and Amnezia server containers, creates protocol keys and certificates, and then lets your devices connect through that server.
The important distinction is that AmneziaVPN is the control and connection software; it is not the hosted endpoint. Your VPS or physical server carries the VPN traffic, while the hosting provider, network route, server location, operating system, and your local ISP still affect privacy, availability, and performance. Self-hosting gives you control of the endpoint, but it does not guarantee anonymity or bypass every form of censorship.
What AmneziaVPN actually does
Amnezia describes its product as a free, open-source client supporting several VPN protocols and the setup of a user’s own VPN server. During first-time self-hosted setup, the application uses the server’s IP address, SSH credentials, and selected protocol to perform the installation. Its technical description says the client installs Docker, runs Amnezia server containers, and generates protocol keys plus a root certificate. Separate containers handle protocol connections.
That architecture creates two separate responsibilities:

- AmneziaVPN client: the application used to connect, configure protocols, create users, and import or distribute connection profiles.
- Your server: the VPS or dedicated Linux machine that receives encrypted VPN traffic and routes it to the internet.
“Self-hosted” normally means renting a VPS from a hosting company and administering it yourself. The hardware is still in someone else’s data center, and the provider may be able to observe infrastructure-level metadata. You remain responsible for access credentials, updates, firewall and account decisions, and whether the server stays reachable.
The container and certificate explanation is Amnezia’s implementation description, not an independent security audit. Treat it as a description of how the application is designed rather than proof of a particular security guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat you need before installing it
Compatibility is the first decision. Amnezia’s published VPS requirements specify the following baseline:
| Requirement | Published value | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu 22.04.x or 24.04.x; Debian 12 or 13 | Choose one of these images when creating the server. |
| Virtualization | KVM | OpenVZ and LXC installations do not meet the stated requirements. |
| Addressing | Public IPv4 | IPv6-only servers are not supported. A domain can be used when it resolves to IPv4. |
| CPU architecture | x86-64/amd64 | x86 and ARM64 servers are outside the published compatibility list. |
| Remote administration | SSH with administrator-capable access | You need a root login or a sudo account that can run any sudo command without a password prompt. |
| Minimum resources | 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM, 10 GB SSD | Amnezia lists this as a baseline, usually enough for a few devices. |
| Recommended for larger use | 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for 10 or more simultaneous connections | This is the publisher’s recommendation, not a speed guarantee. |
Before ordering a VPS for a self-hosted VPN, verify the exact operating-system image, KVM virtualization, public IPv4 allocation, amd64 architecture, SSH availability, and the host’s rules on VPN software. A server that technically boots but lacks a public IPv4 address or permits no administrator-level SSH access cannot complete the documented setup.
SSH credentials are powerful server-management credentials. Use a machine and account you control. If another person only needs to connect from a device, create guest or connection-only access rather than handing over full server administration; Amnezia’s FAQ recommends guest access even for a user’s other devices.

How the self-hosted installation works
The basic path is handled in the app and does not require you to type installation commands into a terminal.
- Install AmneziaVPN on the device that will administer the server and make the first connection.
- Select “Self-hosted VPN.”
- Enter the server details: public IPv4 address, SSH username, and either the SSH password or private key. If SSH uses a non-default port, enter that port as well.
- Choose an installation mode. Automatic installation sets up AmneziaWG. Manual installation lets you select another supported protocol.
- Approve the server changes. The client connects over SSH, installs Docker and the Amnezia containers, and creates the keys and certificates needed for the selected protocol.
- Create connection users or profiles. Import the resulting configuration on each device that should use the VPN. Keep private keys and configuration files confidential.
Other protocols can be added after the initial installation. The server is not a disposable account inside the app: it is a real Linux system whose SSH account, operating-system updates, provider account, and network exposure remain your responsibility.
Which protocol should you choose?
Amnezia’s protocol documentation lists AmneziaWG, XRay VLESS Reality, OpenVPN, and WireGuard. The right choice depends on the network you must reach from, the devices you need to support, and whether that network blocks particular traffic patterns. No protocol is universally fastest, safest, or reachable everywhere.
AmneziaWG
Automatic self-hosted setup installs AmneziaWG, making it the simplest starting point. It is also the protocol discussed in Amnezia’s migration guidance. The guide says AmneziaWG 2.0, like 1.5, has become vulnerable to blocking and recommends moving to version 3.1. Because blocking conditions vary by country, provider, and ISP, that recommendation should not be read as a guarantee that version 3.1 will work on every restricted network.
XRay VLESS Reality
The documentation presents XRay VLESS Reality as another option for difficult network conditions. It allows changes to SNI and, when necessary, the port. Other setting changes can break the connection, so change only values you understand and retain a working configuration before experimenting.

OpenVPN
OpenVPN exposes settings for network, port, cipher and hash, TLS-auth, and a DNS-leak-prevention toggle. It can be useful when a device or network already has strong OpenVPN support, but its availability still depends on the route between your client and server.
WireGuard
WireGuard is listed as a supported protocol and is also the basis of the documented OpenWrt router workflow. Its suitability depends on client compatibility and whether the network permits the required traffic.
In heavily censored conditions, Amnezia’s FAQ points readers toward AmneziaWG or XRay, while explicitly avoiding a promise that either protocol works in every location. Select a protocol based on observed connectivity and device support, not on a blanket speed claim.
Why a self-hosted VPN may still be unreachable
Self-hosting changes where the VPN endpoint is located; it does not remove network filtering. The provider, server region, IP reputation, route, and local ISP all matter.
Whitelist-only networks
Amnezia’s FAQ says there is currently no ready-made supported self-hosted solution for a network that permits only an explicit whitelist of destinations. If the network allows access only to approved addresses, it may block both the VPN connection and the initial SSH connection to your server. A different protocol cannot solve a policy that prevents reaching the server at all.

UDP blocked on high ports
Some ISPs block UDP traffic on high-numbered ports. Amnezia’s setup documentation advises trying an unused port up to 9999 when that specific problem occurs. This is a troubleshooting option, not a general bypass for filtering. Confirm that the selected port is open in the server’s firewall and permitted by the host.
Provider or regional blocking
A public IPv4 address can be blocked, throttled, or unreachable from a particular country or ISP. Testing from the actual network where you plan to use the VPN is more meaningful than testing only from a home connection. If SSH itself fails, check the server’s address, SSH port, credentials, firewall, provider policy, and whether the network permits outbound SSH.

There is no single self-hosted speed figure that applies to all AmneziaVPN deployments. Throughput and latency depend on the server’s CPU and memory, host network capacity, distance and routing, client access network, protocol, encryption overhead, and the number of simultaneous users. The published minimum of one core, 1 GB RAM, and 10 GB SSD is a capacity baseline, not a performance promise; the recommendation of 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for 10 or more simultaneous connections is likewise a planning guideline.
Self-hosting can reduce dependence on a shared VPN provider’s exit locations, but it does not make you anonymous. The VPS host controls the underlying infrastructure, websites still see the server’s public address, and account, payment, DNS, endpoint, and traffic metadata can identify activity. Use HTTPS and other end-to-end protections for sensitive services, and do not treat the VPN tunnel as a substitute for device security or careful account practices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keeping an AmneziaWG installation current
Version changes can invalidate every existing connection profile. Amnezia’s migration guide for AmneziaWG 2.0 to 3.1 specifies AmneziaVPN 5.0.2.1 or later. Its documented path is to remove the 2.0 protocol through the app and then reinstall the protocol as 3.1.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Removing the protocol also removes the users created for it. Existing keys and configuration files therefore stop working; recreate users and distribute new profiles after reinstalling. Export or record any information you are entitled to retain before starting, and check the current migration documentation because version requirements and menus can change.
Safe migration checklist
- Confirm the app version meets the migration guide’s stated minimum.
- Tell every user that their existing profile will need replacement.
- Ensure you still have administrator-capable SSH access before removing the old protocol.
- Remove the old AmneziaWG installation from the app, then install the target version.
- Create new users, import their new profiles, and test from each important network.
Using AmneziaVPN with an OpenWrt router
A router is optional. Amnezia documents an OpenWrt workflow in which you install an AmneziaWG package on the router and load a configuration generated by AmneziaVPN. This can route traffic for devices on the home network without installing a client on each device.
Compatibility is hardware- and firmware-specific. The router guide lists OpenWrt releases for which AmneziaWG 3.1 packages were available when it was published, but package builds can change. Before buying or flashing a router, verify that the exact model, CPU architecture, OpenWrt release, storage, and currently available AmneziaWG package are supported. A generic OpenWrt-compatible router is a category, not a guarantee that every model will work.
When a router makes sense
- Use one when several devices cannot run the AmneziaVPN client.
- Use one when you need a network-wide route rather than per-device profiles.
- Skip it when you need different VPN users, locations, or policies on individual devices and the clients already support AmneziaVPN.
Self-hosted VPN versus a managed VPN service
The central trade-off is control versus operational effort:
| Question | Self-hosted AmneziaVPN | Managed VPN service |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplies the endpoint? | You choose and administer a compatible Linux server. | The service operator supplies and manages endpoints. |
| Who handles updates and recovery? | You manage the server, containers, credentials, and migrations. | The operator handles infrastructure maintenance. |
| What determines reachability? | Your server IP, provider, region, protocol, and local ISP. | The provider’s available locations and network design. |
| What setup is required? | Compatible OS, KVM, public IPv4, amd64, SSH, and resources. | Usually an account and client installation. |
| How are devices connected? | Per-device profiles, or optionally an OpenWrt router. | Provider-supported apps and device limits. |
Choose self-hosting when you want control over the server and are comfortable maintaining it. Choose a managed service when you do not want to operate Linux infrastructure. Neither model automatically defeats whitelist-only restrictions or guarantees anonymity.

Common failure points and fixes
- The app cannot connect over SSH: verify the IPv4 address, SSH port, username, password or key, firewall rules, and whether the account can run sudo without a password.
- The server is rejected as incompatible: check for Ubuntu 22.04.x/24.04.x or Debian 12/13, KVM, amd64, public IPv4, and at least the published resources.
- Installation completes but clients cannot connect: test the selected port, server firewall, provider restrictions, and whether the client network blocks the protocol.
- UDP appears blocked: try an unused port up to 9999 as the documentation suggests, then retest from the affected ISP.
- Old keys fail after migration: recreate users and profiles; removing AmneziaWG 2.0 invalidates the old credentials.
- A router profile does not work: confirm the exact OpenWrt release, router architecture, package build, and generated configuration format.
Bottom line
AmneziaVPN makes self-hosting practical by automating the SSH, Docker, container, key, and certificate steps on a compatible Linux server. You still need to supply and maintain that server, select a protocol suited to your network, and plan for blocked IPs, ISP restrictions, version migrations, and credential replacement. It is a control layer for a VPN endpoint you administer—not a hosted anonymity service and not a universal censorship workaround.
